2020 Belmont Stakes Handicapping
The long wait is over, and horse racing fans are finally going to see a Triple Crown race this weekend with the running of the 2020 Belmont Stakes. Traditionally the third leg of the US Triple Crown, in this wacky year for sports the Belmont is actually kicking off the series and will be followed by the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in the fall.
Shortened to 1 1/8 miles, the Belmont is also not the 1 1/2 mile ‘Test Of The Champion’ we’ve previously known it to be. But the race has drawn a solid field of 10 three-year-old colts, one of which will have the chance to become the next Triple Crown champ.

2020 Belmont Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Tiz The Law Race Odds: 20-27
A New York bred with four wins in five lifetime starts, Tiz The Law tops many polls as the best three-year-old in the US right now, and a win in the Belmont would cement his status as Derby favourite.
He comes into the race off back-to-back wins in the (G3) Holy Bull Stakes and (G1) Florida Derby to go along with a win in the (G1) Champagne Stakes as well as his maiden score first time out last summer at Saratoga. The only blemish on his record is a close-up third-place effort in the (G2) Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes, a race run over a sloppy track last November at Churchill Downs.
He’s trained by Barclay Tagg, who teamed up with owners Sackatoga Stables to win the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes with Funny Cide, another New York-bred colt. Manuel Franco is the jock.
2020 Belmont Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Tap It To Win Race Odds: 6-1
Coming in on just 16 days rest from his last start, Tap It To Win earned his spot in the starting gate with an impressive wire-to-wire win in an 1 1/16 mile allowance level race at Belmont, hitting the finish line in a time that was just a half second off the track record.
That was his second win in a row, but this will be just his second lifetime graded-stakes start after he was well beaten in the (G1) Breeders’ Futurity back in October. Expect him to go to the front from the #1 gate and try to take them as far as he can go.
Trainer Mark Casse won the Belmont in 2019 with Sir Winston. Two-time Belmont winner John Velazquez will ride.
2020 Belmont Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Sole Volante Race Odds: 7-1
Never out of the money in six lifetime starts – with four wins – Sole Volante prepped for this race with an allowance-level win in a field that included the highly regarded Ete Indien. Prior to that he was second in the (G2) Tampa Bay Derby after winning the (G3) Sam F. Davis Stakes, also at Tampa Bay Downs.
An off-the-pace runner, he’ll benefit from an early speed duel and should appreciate the stretch out in distance from his previous starts.
He trained by Patrick Biancone, while jockey Luca Panici gets his first ever Triple Crown start.
2020 Belmont Stakes Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Dr. Post Race Odds: 15-2
A lightly raced colt with only three starts to his name, Dr. Post has shown improvement every time out, and last race popped off a 101 Equibase speed rating to win the Unbridled Stakes, despite having something of a rough trip.
That figure puts him in the mix here, but he’s also taking a big step up in class from any of his previous three races.
Todd Pletcher is the trainer and goes for his fourth Belmont win, 2016 winning jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. is tapped to ride.
Here’s my 2020 Belmont Stakes Free Pick.
Tiz The Law is the much deserving favourite here, and if he runs to his class (and on a dry track) he could win by open lengths. That said, he could also be even-money at post time, and so I’ll try to beat him and take the late-running Sole Volante for the win.
I expect there will be a fairly fast pace early with Tap It To Win and Fore Left battling it out for the lead and Tiz The Law sitting right off the pace. I’ll hope Sole Volante can stay close enough to get the jump off the sweeping Belmont turn and run them down in the lane.
I’ll box him and Tiz The Law in the exacta, and use Tap It To Win and Dr. Post underneath in the trifecta.
