2019 Springboard Mile Handicapping
The race for qualifying points for the 2020 Kentucky Derby goes through Oklahoma this Sunday with the running of the Springboard Mile. The top four finishers in the race will earn Derby qualifying points on a 10-4-2-1 scale. The race has drawn a field of 12 starters, and they’ll be running on the Remington Park dirt track.
Here then are four horses I’ll consider on a betting slip.
The Springboard Mile field features a handful of Oklahoma-bred horses taking on a group of rivals shipping in from out of state. The 12 entries represent a fairly mixed bag of talent and on paper it shapes up to be a good betting race.
Odds listed here are from the Remington Park track handicapper.
2019 Springboard Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Answer In Race Odds: 5-2
The slight morning line favorite, Answer In ships in from Churchill Downs, where last out he gained his maiden career victory and in the process racked up the highest speed figure in the Remington field. That was a race that featured a lot of early speed and Answer In was able to emerge from mid-pack to take over in the stretch and win going away by more than 5 lengths.
He’s trained by Brad Cox and Javier Castellano will ride.
2019 Springboard Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Rowdy Yates Race Odds: 7-2
The top local hope, the Oklahoma-bred Rowdy Yates owns a pair of back-to-back wins on the Remington dirt in lower-level stakes races. He has also raced twice this year in graded-stakes events, having run second in the (G3) Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs back in June, and fifth more recently in the (G3) Iroquois Stakes also at Churchill.
Steve Asmussen trains, Richard Eremia is the jockey.

2019 Springboard Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Embolden Race Odds: 9-2
While Embolden sports an impressive record of two wins and three other in-the-money finishes in five lifetime starts, it’s important to note that both of those wins and all four of his last races have been on the turf. With the Derby points up for grabs it’s no surprise the connections will take a shot here even though grass seems to be his best surface.
He’s trained by Michael Stidham, Brian Hernandez Jr. gets the call to ride.
2019 Springboard Mile Free Pick & Handicapping: Maximiliano Race Odds: 5-1
After starting his career with a runner-up finish first time out, Maximiliano was impressive in getting his maiden win in his second start over two rivals that both came back to win their next starts. He was on the lead from the start in that win and set some pretty solid early fractions racing six furlongs, now he’ll be tasked with carrying that speed through a two-turn mile.
Wesley Ward is the trainer, Martin Garcia will be in the saddle.
Here’s my 2019 Springboard Mile Handicap Free Pick.
I’m a sucker for young horses that show some fight early in their career, and that’s what we saw with Maximiliano in his win at Keeneland, where he led early, was headed at the top of the stretch and then fought back in deep stretch to get the win. Trainer Ward is one of the best in the business with two-year olds, so I’ll take him for the win, and play the exacta with Answer In.
