2019 Remsen Stakes Handicapping
As part of the qualifying race series for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, the Remsen Stakes offers Derby points on a 10-4-2-1 scale to the top four finishers. Open to horses aged two, the Remsen has drawn a field of nine, and they’ll be racing 1 1/8 miles on the Aqueduct dirt.
Here then are four horses I’ll use to fill out a betting slip.
In a good betting race with several closely matched contenders, distance is going to be a question in the Remsen as all the colts will be asked to go a bit further than they have to this point. Odds listed here are the morning line odds from from Aqueduct.
2019 Remsen Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Forza Di Oro Race Odds: 3-1
After running second in his lifetime debut in September, Forza Di Oro picked up his first win in his second start in late October, coming from well off the pace to take control late and hit the wire in front by 3/4 of a length. That run was at 1 1/16 miles on the Belmont Park dirt, and so the stretch out for him shouldn’t be a problem.
Hall of Famer Bill Mott is the trainer, Junior Alvarado will ride.
2019 Remsen Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Chase Tracker Race Odds: 7-2
After putting up a big speed figure to win his first lifetime start, Chase Tracker stepped up to the graded-stakes ranks his next out and ran third in the (G2) Nashua at Aqueduct one month ago. There he was more than 13 lengths back of the winner racing one mile, and so distance is a concern.
Todd Pletcher trains, Javier Castellano will be in the saddle.

2019 Remsen Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Alpha Sixty Six Race Odds: 4-1
Another winner in his lifetime debut, Alpha Sixty Six also moved up to graded-stakes competition for his second start where he ran fifth in the (G1) Champagne. He was no match there for a very good winner but was less than a length out of second.
Another Todd Pletcher trainee, John Velazquez is the rider.
2019 Remsen Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Shotski Race Odds: 15-1
Originally entered to run last weekend in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill, Shotski was scratched out of that race to try his luck here instead. Although he only has a maiden win in three starts, he was a very close up fourth last out in the Street Sense Stakes against a very good field, producing the top speed figure of all the entries here. A repeat of that performance gives him an outside shot.
Jeremiah O’Dwyer trains, Luis Saez gets the mount.
Here’s my 2019 Remsen Stakes Free Pick.
You could make a good case for a few of these but after a terrible start I liked the effort put up by Alpha Sixty Six to close ground late in the Champagne, and I’m going to bet him for the win and hope to get a bit of a price. I think the move by trainer O’Dwyer to put Shotski here rather than in the JC Stakes last weekend is significant and I’ll use him in the exacta box with Alpha Sixty Six and Forza Di Oro.
