2019 Matriarch Stakes Handicapping

One of the last Grade 1 stakes races of the year, the Matriarch has drawn a competitive field of 11 fillies and mares aged three and older. They’ll be racing one mile on the Del Mar turf course.

Here then are four horses I’ll use to fill out a betting slip.

Out of the 11 runners expected to go to the gate, the handicapping task comes down to evaluating the top four in the field, all of which are coming into the race in good form off of recent success. Odds listed are the morning line odds at Del Mar.

2019 Matriarch Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Got Stormy Race Odds: 5-2

The slight favorite in the ML, Got Stormy was most recently seen running second behind superstar Uni in the 2019 Breeders’ Cup Mile. That was her second consecutive runner-up finish after being upset by a 45-1 long shot in the (G1) Woodbine Mile. She’s been in the money in all seven of her starts this year, with three wins.

Trained by Mark Casse, Tyler Gaffalione gets the ride.

2019 Matriarch Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping : Juliete Foxtrot Race Odds: 3-1

An English-bred that only had average results on her home soil, Juliete Foxtrot has shown steady improvement over this year racing in the US, having finished first or second in all five her 2019 starts. Last out she was second behind Uni in a very tough field in the (G1) First Lady Stakes at Keeneland.

She’s trained by Brad Cox and Florent Geroux is the rider.

2019 Matriarch Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Toinette Race Odds: 7-2

One of the more lightly raced runners in the field, Toinette has only made four starts in 2019 but has made the most of her chances, winning three of those and finishing third – behind Juliete Foxtrot – in the other. Her speed figures have been consistently solid through those races as well, although the overall competition she has faced may be just a cut below the top two here.

She’s trained by Neil Drysdale and Flavien Prat is the rider.

2019 Matriarch Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping Significant Form Race Odds: 9-2

Yet another who has done her best running this past season as a four-year-old, Significant Form is on a two-race winning streak and has taken three-of-four in 2019. Last out she won the (G3) Noble Damsel Stakes at Belmont Park following on the heels of winning the (G2) Balston Spa Stakes at Saratoga.

Chad Brown is trainer of record, and John Velazquez will be in the irons.

She got a tough break in drawing the outside post, but if she can overcome that obstacle I think Juliete Foxtrot is sitting on breakthrough performance here. On paper you have to give Got Stormy the class edge, but she’s been running a very tough fall campaign as she’ll be making her fifth start in just under four months and I have a sense all that racing is starting to catch up with her.
