2019 Clark Stakes Handicapping
Long known as the Clark Handicap, the Clark Stakes at Churchill Downs features horse aged three and older racing 1 1/8 miles on the dirt for a total purse of $600,000. The race has drawn a field of 12 starters.
Here then are four horses I’ll use to fill out a betting slip.
The field for the Clark includes a mix of seasoned older horses and younger colts, all of which have taken various routes to Churchill, including past Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup runners. Pre-race odds listed here are from Bovada’s racebook.
2019 Clark Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Tom’s d’Etat Race Odds: 11-4
The six-year-old veteran Tom’s D’Etat only moved up to graded-stakes racing this year and has been getting some good results, including a win last out in the (G2) Hagyard Fayette Stakes at Keeneland Race Course one month ago. He scored a lower-level stakes win mid-summer at Saratoga and has been in the money in four of his last five starts.
Jockey Joel Rosario comes into the race off a pair of wins on Breeders’ Cup weekend, while Albert Stall is the trainer.
2019 Clark Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping : Mr. Freeze Race Odds: 8-1
Away from the races for seven months earlier this year, Mr.Freeze seems to be coming into his own since his return to the track in August. Two starts back he scored a win in the (G3) Ack Ack Stakes going one mile at Churchill and then last out ran second to Tom’s d’Etat in the Hagyard Fayette.
He’ll be sent out by trainer Dale Romans, and Robbie Albarado gets the mount.

2019 Clark Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping: Seeking The Soul Race Odds: 7-1
The winner of this race in 2017 and the third-place finisher last year, Seeking the Soul has been in a big slump in the latter half of 2019 and is without a top-three finish in his last three starts.
What has to be considered is that all three of those races – including the Breeders’ Cup Classic – were against some of the very best horses in the country, and for him this race represents a definite drop down in class against several others taking a step up.
He’s trained by Dallas Stewart with Brian Hernandez in the irons.
2019 Clark Stakes Free Pick & Handicapping Owendale Race Odds: 7-1
The only three-year-old in the field, third-place finisher in the 2019 Preakness Stakes Owendale is also the most solid closer in the race and he should get a fast early pace to run at here. Well beaten last out in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, he does have a pair of Grade 3 wins to his name this year and off of that fits very well in this field.
He’s trained by Brad Cox and will be ridden by Florent Geroux.
Here’s my 2019 Clark Stakes Free Pick.
Despite the look of the pre-race odds this is a wide-open event and I think Tom’s d’Etat is a very beatable favorite. With that in mind I’m going to take Mr. Freeze at a bit of a price to reverse the order from last race over Tom’s d’Etat with Seeking The Soul and Owendale to fill out the bottom of the ticket.
