2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Handicapping
The counterpoint to Friday’s Juvenile Turf Sprint for two-year-old colts, the Turf Sprint is for horses aged three and older. The fastest race on the Breeders’ Cup schedule, the Turf Sprint is run at 5 furlongs on the grass and offers a total purse of $1 million.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory this week.
Twelve are expected to go to the Santa Anita gate for the Turf Sprint, including the defending champion Stormy Liberal, who took last year’s race at Churchill Downs by a neck at odds of 7-1.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Handicapping: Final Frontier Odds: 11-1
While he has spent most of his career running in lower-level races, Final Frontier has shown steady improvement where ever he has raced and has finished in the money in all four of his 2019 races, with two wins.
This will be his first try at the shorter 5 furlongs, having last out won the Belmont Turf Sprint Stakes at 6 furlongs in a very fast 1:07.39. Trainer Tom Albertrani has to believe there’s even more room for improvement off that effort. Luis Saez will get the ride.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Handicapping: Eddie Haskell Race Odds: 9-2
In his last two races Eddie Haskell has finished just in front of defending BC Turf Sprint champion Stormy Liberal, the most recent of those in the (G2) Eddie D Stakes at Santa Anita.
That was his second runner-up finish in a row, following on the heels of three consecutive wins. Trained by Mark Glatt, he’ll have Joel Rosario in the saddle.

2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Handicapping: Stubbins Race Odds: 8-1
Overcoming a hard bump in the stretch, Stubbins shook that off to score his first graded-stakes win last out in the (G2) Woodford Stakes at Keeneland, finishing in front of two rivals he’ll meet again in this race. Three starts back he finished third but only beaten a length by pre-race favorite Eddie Haskell.
A dirt runner earlier in his career, he’s been in the money in four-of-five turf races for trainer Doug O’Neil. Flavien Prat gets the call to ride.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint: Shekky Shebaz Race Odds: 12-1
Shekky Shebaz has followed a similar path to the Breeders’ Cup as Final Frontier, and in fact beat that one two starts back at Saratoga before Final Frontier turned the tables in their last meeting.
Although he spent most of his career racing on the synthetic surface at Presque Isle Downs, he won his only race on a firm turf surface. Jason Servis trains, and Irad Ortiz will be the rider.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Free Pick
I’m a little concerned about the distance being a bit short, but Final Frontier’s last race was very good, and I’m hoping a repeat performance gets him to the winner’s circle on Saturday.
It’s interesting to note that while he’s in double-digit odds in Bovada’s future bets racebook, the Santa Anita track handicapper has him at a significantly lower 6-1 and fourth choice in the race.
