2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Handicapping
An all-out 6 furlong dash for the cash, the Breeders’ Cup Sprint is run on the Santa Anita dirt track and offers up a purse of $2 million. The 2019 Sprint has drawn a field of 9 starters.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory this week.
The Breeders’ Cup Sprint features four horses with previous Breeders’ Cup experience, although two of those previously competed in the Dirt Mile. One returns to the race after running in 2017 but missing last year and one other is seeking redemption after missing out on the win in 2018.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Shancealot Odds: 4-1
Not one of those that has raced in the Breeders’ Cup before, Shancealot comes into the race after giving BC Dirt Mile favorite Omaha all he could handle in the Santa Anita Sprint Championships before losing by a very slim head just three weeks ago.
Prior to that he was third as part of a four-horse photo finish in the (G1) Alan Jerkins Stakes at Saratoga, a 7-furlong event that he led until just getting nailed by two others at the wire. He’ll try to get there first this time for trainer Jorge Navarro. Jose Ortiz gets the call to ride.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping : Mitole Race Odds: 9-4
The morning line favorite, Mitole has been on quite a roll, winning five of six races so far in 2019 and seven of his last eight overall. Three of his wins have come at the Grade 1 level, and he has never been out of the money in 10 lifetime starts.
He would have been a strong contender for this race last year but was injured and missed the last half of the season. He’s trained by Steve Asmussen, and Ricardo Santana is his regular rider.

2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Imperial Hint Race Odds: 13-4
This is the one looking for redemption, as Imperial Hint was pegged as the favorite to win this race last year and then ran very poorly, ducking out at the start and never getting into a comfortable stride, eventually finishing a not-very-close third.
He has been running well coming into this race, having beat Mitole two starts back and last out winning the (G1) Vosburgh Invitational Stakes by a nose over Firenze Fire, who he’ll face again here. Luis Carvajal is the trainer, Javier Castellano is the jockey.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Free Pick & Handicapping: Catalina Cruiser Race Odds: 6-1
After trying to stretch out in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile and finishing sixth, Catalina Cruiser comes back to try at what for him should be a much better distance. Although he doesn’t have a Grade 1 win on his resume, he has won six times at the Grade 2 level, and seven of eight races overall for his career.
John Sadler is the trainer, and jockey Joel Rosario picks up the mount.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Free Pick
While Mitole is scary fast, his recent loss to Imperial Hint shows he’s not invincible and so I’m going to go outside the box and pick Shancealot here to pull the mild upset. I’m a big fan of Omaha Beach, and so any horse that can battle that one stride-for-stride through the entire stretch gets my attention.
