2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Handicapping
A brand-new race on the Breeders’ Cup schedule, the Juvenile Turf Sprint has drawn a field of 12 two-year-old colts and fillies. They’ll race 5 furlongs on the Santa Anita turf course, chasing a total purse of $1 million.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory in the Juvenile Turf Sprint
The Juvenile Turf Sprint has attracted a balanced field of six US-based horses and six European-based shippers to run for the BC crown. While you always have to respect turf runners coming in from overseas, the race appears to be setting up to give a slight edge to the homebreds.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Handicapping: Four Wheel Drive Race Odds: 7-2
Coming in off a three-length win in the (G3) Futurity Stakes at Belmont Park, Four Wheel Drive is now two-for-two in his young career after overcoming a rough start and then cruising to a win in his maiden debut at Colonial Downs.
Sired by 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharaoh and trained by Wesley Ward, he hit the wire in the Futurity in an eye-catching 1:08.07 for the six furlongs, and increased his speed figure on the Belmont grass from his previous outing, both positive signs of a horse on the improve. Irad Ortiz will be in the saddle.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Handicapping: A’Ali Race Odds: 5-1
The top hope of the Euro invaders, A’Ali has been racing in both England and France, and last out scored a one-length win in a Group 2 event at Donnington, getting the five furlongs in :59.30 over a course rated as good-fast.

That was his third win in four starts, with the only blemish on his recent record a close up fifth when he tried stepping up to the Group 1 level in France. The legendary Franco Detorri has been aboard for all three of his wins and gets the mount here as well.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Handicapping: Kimari Race Odds: 13-4
A filly going up against the boys, Kimari has won three of her four lifetime starts, with all of those coming on US soil, but she may have run her best race when finishing second beaten just a head by the highly regarded Raffle Prize in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Ascot in the UK in mid-June.
She’s another Wesley Ward trainee, and after riding her in her first three races before giving way to Mike Smith for her last race, John Velazquez will be back in the irons.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Handicapping: Encoder Race Odds: 25-1
After winning his career debut at five furlongs, Encoder has since tried stretching out to one mile with mixed results, picking up another win and then running fourth last out in the Zuma Beach Stakes at Santa Anita.
In that initial win at Del Mar he stopped the clock at 56.84 and with a cut back in distance here, if he can run that race again he’s in with an upset chance as possibly the longest shot on the board. John Sadler is the trainer of record, and the red-hot Flavien Plat will be in the saddle.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Handicapping Free Pick
In what should be a very tight race, I expect Four Wheel Drive to be right up on the pace out of the gate before taking over and then holding off a late charge from A’Ali for the win.
