2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Handicapping
The second race on the Friday Breeders’ Cup card, the 2019 Juvenile Turf has attracted a full field of 14 two-year-old colts to race one mile on the Santa Anita turf, chasing a total purse of $1 million.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory this week.
In what looks on paper to be one of the best betting races in Friday’s lineup, 11 of the expected starters are in double-digits in the morning line odds, with a lukewarm favorite shipping in from Ireland.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Handicapping: Hit The Road Race Odds: 12-1
He’s going to have to overcome the outside post position and a step up in class, but Hit The Road comes into the BC Juvenile Turf off a win over the Santa Anita turf after taking the Zuma Beach Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths over War Beast and Billy Batts, both of whom he’ll be facing again here.
That was his second consecutive turf score after starting his career with a dull effort on the dirt. Trainer Dan Blacker seems to have found a horse for the course, and he’s enlisted jockey Flavien Prat to try and get it done.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Handicapping: Arizona Race Odds: 9/4
The solid pre-race favorite, Irish-bred Arizona has been keeping top company overseas, with his last three races all coming at the Group 1 level. Although he didn’t win any of those, he showed steady improvement going from fourth to third to second in his last, two lengths back of the very tough Pinatubo.
He’ll be stretching out to a mile of the first time for trainer Aiden O’Brien. Top UK jock Ryan Moore gets the mount.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Handicapping: Structor Race Odds: 6-1
After stalking just off the pace early, Structor came four wide to grab the lead and then hold on to win by a head in the (G3) Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont in his last outing. Expect the same tactics here as he gets a slight cutback in distance, and that could work to his advantage.

He’s two-for-two in his early career for trainer Chad Brown after taking his career debut also at 1 1/16 miles at Saratoga in August. He’ll be ridden by Jose Ortiz.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Handicapping: Peace Achieved Race Odds: 10-1
One of the more experienced runners in the race with five races under his saddle, Peace Achieved has reeled off three straight wins coming into the Breeders’ Cup, two of those at one mile. Last out he went 1 1/16 miles to win the (G3) Bourbon Stakes, continuing a string of improving his speed figures in every race.
He’s trained by Mark Casse and will be ridden by Miguel Mena, who has been in the saddle for all of his wins.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Free Pick
While the class of Arizona makes him a formidable foe, I really like the last effort by Hit The Road and am hoping a repeat of that will be enough to get it done. I’m also hoping to get anything close to 12-1 odds and make this my upset pick of the day.
