2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Handicapping
The marquee event to close out Friday at the Breeders’ Cup, the winner of the Juvenile is always pegged as a top contender for the Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday of May. Although only two horses in history have turned the BC Juvenile/Kentucky Derby double, they’ll all break from the gate with a chance, racing 1 1/16 miles for a purse of $2 million.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory this week.
With a compact field of only eight runners, the Juvenile features two heavy favorites and six others trying to score a big upset.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Handicapping: Dennis’ Moment Odds: 13-10
After an aborted debut where he clipped heels and dumped his rider, Dennis’ Moment came back in his next start and ran away from the field, setting a blazing early pace and romping to a 19 length win. He backed that up when he stepped up to Grade 3 company at Churchill in mid-September to win again by a more modest 1 3/4 lengths.
Here he’s facing his toughest test yet, but this is a horse simply loaded with speed. Dale Romans is the trainer, and Irad Ortiz gets the mount.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Handicapping: Eight Rings Race Odds: 8-5
If not for the presence of Dennis’ Moment, Eight Rings would be the clear race favorite. He comes in off a six length win at the track and at the distance after capturing the Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes, and he’d likely be three-for-three on the season if he hadn’t ducked out and dumped his rider two starts back.
As it is, he has two wins by a total of 12 lengths, and if the jump up in competition causes the top choice to falter, he’ll be right there to pick up the pieces. Bob Baffert is the trainer, and John Velazquez gets the call to ride.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Handicapping: Wrecking Crew Race Odds: 28-1
He’s been knocking in the door at the graded-stakes level with two runner-up finishes in his last two races, and although he’s likely running for a small piece of the prize here, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Wrecking Crew proved to be the best of the rest.
He’ll likely be at big odds in a race where the the smart bet will be finding a horse to round out the bottom of the trifecta. Trainer Peter Miller has tapped Paco Lopez to ride.

2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile: Scabbard Race Odds: 13-2
After running into traffic trouble and having to be steadied at the 1/2 mile pole, Scabbard showed a lot of moxie last out to get back in the race and rally to finish just behind Dennis’ Moment in the American Pharoah.
That was his second straight runner-up finish, and trainer Eddie Kenneally must be liking the fight his young colt has been putting up. Friday might not be his day, but we’re still six months from the Run for the Roses and it always serves a colt well to overcome some adversity early in his career. The record holder for most Breeders’ Cup wins by a jockey, Mike Smith, will be in the saddle.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Free Pick
As much as I hate to bet the chalk, Dennis’ Moment’s numbers can’t be ignored. He’s run three straight bullet workouts – meaning he was fastest on the day of all horses with a timed workout at the same distance – six bullets out of eight works overall, and on one of the two when he wasn’t first, he was second. In his most recent workout at Santa Anita he went 46.60 over four furlongs, and that’s flying.
Workouts don’t always translate to races, but he seems like the real deal.
