2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Handicapping
Irish-bred two-year-old fillies hold a strong hand in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Friday, with six of the 14 expected starters holding Irish pedigree. They’ll break from the Santa Anita gate to race one mile on the grass, trying to grab a share of the $1 million purse.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory this week.
There’s no clear favorite in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, and that means it should set up as an excellent betting race, with possibly big payoffs for exotic bets like exactas and trifectas.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Handicapping: Daahyeh Odds: 9-2
The lone UK-bred in the field, Daahyeh has never been worse than second in five lifetime starts and has scored three wins, the most recent of those last time out in a Group 2 event at Newmarket in late September. Prior to that she tried top-level competition and ran second beaten only 3/4 of a length in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh in Ireland.
She’ll be taking her first shot at the one-mile distance under regular rider William Buick for trainer Roger Varian.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Handicapping: Albigna Race Odds: 7-2
Top choice among the Irish fillies, Albigna does have win at the distance to her credit and also a Group 1 win, having ticked both those boxes just two weeks ago when she scored a 2 1/2 length victory racing in France.
That win came over soft turf, a condition she’ll not likely get in southern California and it may be a big ask to replicate that effort wheeling back on short rest. Trained by Mrs. John Harrington (really, that’s how it’s listed) she’ll be ridden by Shane Foley.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Handicapping: Selflessly Race Odds: 10-1
She’ll have to overcome breaking from far out in the number 13 post, but Selflessly has shown a lot of fight in the past, overcoming a bump at the quarter-pole and a six-wide trip to grab second in her lifetime debut. She followed that up last out with a win after coming five wide in the (G2) Miss Grillo Stakes, taking a big step forward.

Another move forward off that effort puts her in the mix here. She’s a Chad Brown trainee and Javier Castellano picks up the ride.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Handicapping: Croughavouke Race Odds: 33-1
Every Breeders’ Cup has to have at least one horse with an un-pronounceable name, and this one is it. While she’s clearly a long shot in this field, what Croughavouke has going for her is that she’s the only filly in the race with a start and a result over the track, having run second last out in the Surfer Girl Stakes at Santa Anita. Trained by Jeff Mullins, she’ll be ridden by Flavien Prat.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Free Pick
I like Daahyeh to turn the tables on her Irish cousins and come home in front. She’s been more than competitive racing in a higher class than most of these, and if she can carry her form to California and get ahold of the track, she’ll be tough to beat.
