2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Handicapping
Kicking off the second day of the 2019 Breeders’ Cup, the Filly and Mare sprint is open to female horses aged three and older. They run 7 furlongs on the Santa Anita dirt track, vying for a piece of the $1 million total purse.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory this week.
Nine have drawn into the field for the Filly and Mare Sprint, including two three-year-olds going up against their older rivals. For two of the entries, this will be their second shot at a Breeders’ Cup title.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Handicapping: Covfefe Odds: 7-4
Coming in on a two-race winning streak at the 7 furlong distance, last out Covfefe took the Dogwood Stakes at Churchill by a convincing 8 lengths over a filly that came back in the next race to win a Grade 2 event at Keeneland. Prior to that she won the (G1) Test Stakes at Saratoga in early August.
She’s a speedy filly who is comfortable on the lead or racing just off the pace. The only concerns for trainer Brad Cox are that this will be her first time racing on the Santa Anita dirt, and perhaps more significantly, the last time she went up against older mares she faded to third after setting the pace. Joel Rosario gets the ride.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Handicapping: Come Dancing Race Odds: 9-4
Since running fifth a year ago in the (G1) Beldame Invitational, she’s been almost unbeatable, with four wins and two runner-up finishes in six races since then. She’s won two in a row for trainer Carlos Martin, including the (G1) Ballerina at Saratoga.

Three starts back she ran second in the (G1) Ogden Phipps, beaten 3 1/2 lengths by Midnight Bisou, morning line favorite for the BC Distaff. Javier Castellano will be in the saddle.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Handicapping: Spiced Perfection Race Odds: 6-1
After overcoming a stumble at the gate, Spiced Perfection rallied last out to win the (G2) Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes by a head, her second graded-stakes score of the season. On paper she lacks some of the speed of the top two and she can be a bit inconsistent, but her back class makes her competitive in this field.
She’s trained by Peter Miller, and John Velazques will be in the irons.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Bellafina Race Odds: 10-1
Along with Cofveve, Bellefina is the other three-year-old in the race. She started the season on fire with three straight wins between January and April, all three coming on the Santa Anita dirt, so there’s no question she likes the track.
She has struggled more recently with no wins in three starts, only managing a third-place finish two starts back in the Test Stakes, beaten more than 9 lengths by Cofveve. Simon Callaghan is the trainer of record, while Flavien Prat will be the rider.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint Free Pick
It just so happens I was at Saratoga to see Cofveve win the Test Stakes in August, but my money was on the runner up. She made a believer out of me that day, I think she’ll handle the challenge of going up against older horses this time, and I think the 7 furlong distance is right in her wheelhouse.
