2019 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Handicapping
The first of two one-mile races on Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup card, the Dirt Mile is open to horses aged three and older. They’ll race two turns at Santa Anita, chasing a purse of $1 million.
Here then are four horses I feel have the best shot at glory this week.
Not a sprint but not a distance race, a one mile race on the dirt or turf is all about jockey tactics and pace. This year’s Dirt Mile includes one runner whose name will be familiar to handicappers who followed the 2019 Triple Crown.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Handicapping: Omaha Beach Odds: 5-4
After winning the (G2) Rebel Stakes and (G1) Arkansas Derby last spring, Omaha Beach was cruising toward the Kentucky Derby until an injury put him on the shelf for six months. He only returned to the races in mid-October but picked up right where he left off, winning the Santa Anita Sprint Championship by a hard-fought head.
Trained by Richard Mandella, he gets the services of jockey Mike Smith.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Handicapping: Mr. Money Race Odds: 5-1
Runner up in the (G1) Pennsylvania Derby in September, Mr. Money came just a head short in that race of making it five consecutive wins. Fourth in last year’s BC Juvenile, he had a slow start to the season until scoring a win at one mile in his third start of 2019.

Although he lacks a Grade 1 win, he’s been very consistent in lower graded-stakes at 1 1/8 miles. Expect jockey Gabriel Saez to take the Bret Calhoun trainee to the front out of the gate and try to steal it from there.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Handicapping: Improbable Race Odds: 9-2
Finishing just out of the money in both the 2019 Derby and Preakness Stakes, it always seemed that his connections were trying to get Improbable to race a distance that just too far for his liking. He’s two-for-two at the one mile distance, and only has two wins in seven other starts beyond that.
That being the case, it makes perfect sense for trainer Bob Baffert to give him a shot here. Rafael Bejarano gets the ride.
2019 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile: Spun To Run Race Odds: 12-1
Also two-for-two at the distance, Spun To Run only moved into graded-stakes racing in mid-summer but he made a good impression when he ran third in the (G1) Haskell Invitational at odds of 35-1.
He’s been a bit inconsistent since then for trainer Juan Guerrero, but he prepped for this with a convincing six length win in a lower level stakes race at Parx Racing. Top jock Irad Ortiz will be the rider.
Here’s my 2019 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint Free Pick
I was a big fan of Omaha Beach last spring and was disappointed when he didn’t go into the Derby. He needed to work a bit harder than I would have liked to get the win in the SA Sprint Championships and he’s coming back on short rest, but after six months off he should be in good enough condition to prove he’s the class of this field.
