2017 Belmont Stakes Preview and Picks
Ready to bet on the 2017 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds? The third jewel in the 2017 Triple Crown – 149th running of the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes presented by NYRABets goes down this Saturday June 10 from Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. A purse of $1.5 million will be on the line for a group of 12 three year olds willing to saddle up and go 1 1/2 miles on Belmont Park’s turf track.
Unfortunately for race fans, this year’s edition lacks a true favorite – Kentucky Derby winner Always Dreaming and Preakness Stakes victor Cloud Computing will skip the Belmont as will the early favorite for this race – Classic Empire who withdrew Wednesday thanks to an abscess in his foot.
That leaves a wide-open field to contest The Test of the Champions on the biggest day at the New York State track.
Let’s take a look at the still quality field and what should transpire as we wrap up another Triple Crown season.
2017 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds: Irish War Cry & Epicharis
The tepid morning line favorite for the Belmont Stakes is Graham Motion trained Irish War Cry (7-2). He has certainly shown form with wins in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial, the Grade 2 Holy Bull Stakes by 3 3/4 lengths and the restricted Marylander Stakes.

He hasn’t been afraid of throw in the occasional dud including a tenth last time out in the Kentucky Derby and a seventh in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes.
The morning line second choice Epicharis (4-1) comes from Japan and will make his North American debut Saturday.
He has four wins and a second-place finish in his five starts including three stakes wins at home and a good second last time out in the UAE Derby at Meydan.
Not a whole lot is known about this entry but his debut state-side is one to keep an eye on for sure.
2017 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds: Lookin at Lee, Tapwrit, Gormley
The third betting choice happens to be the only entry that will have taken part in all three legs of the Triple Crown – Lookin At Lee is listed at 5-1 and enters off a fourth in the Preakness and a runner-up finish in the Kentucky Derby.
He hasn’t posted a win since August but has a chance to break through against what appears to be a slightly watered-down field this week. Tapwrit is listed at 6-1 odds but hasn’t looked good in his last two starts overall while John Shirreffs trained Gormley looms at 8-1 on the morning line.
Gormley has had a knack of bouncing back from poor results and producing superb results. This week could be more of the same – he was ninth in the Kentucky Derby and is due for a patented strong effort this week.
It wasn’t long ago that Gormley finished fourth in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes but bounce back after that with a terrific win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Stakes – proof that he learns off his disappointing efforts.
2017 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds: Senior Investment & Patch
There are two entries listed at 12-1 on the morning line – Kenneth McPeek trained Senior Investment and Todd Pletcher trained Patch, who looked a tad out of his element in the Kentucky Derby.
Senior Investment is on manys radar this week thanks to his game third place finish in the Preakness. Outside of that result however, he has been just OK in his short career.
2017 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds: J Boys Echo, Meantime, Multiplier
Dale Romans trained J Boys Echo, Bryan Lynch trained Meantime and Brenden Walsh trained Multiplier all sit at 15-1 odds. Of the three Multiplier may be the best bet here. He was an OK sixth in the Preakness and won the Grade 3 Illinois Derby before that.
J Boys Echo has been pedestrian in his last two starts and Meantime has raced in graded stakes company just once – that resulting in a second in the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on this track last time out.
There is some value further down the board – winner of four of six career starts Twisted Tom (20-1) enters his graded stakes debut on a three-race win streak – two minor stakes at Laurel Park included.
He hasn’t been touched in months and is an intriguing sleeper in his major step up in competition. Hollywood Handsome rounds out the field at 30-1 on the morning line. He has been OK but has yet to place in two graded stakes starts.
So, who wins the third Jewel of the 2017 Triple Crown?
2017 Belmont Stakes Betting Odds: Free Pick
I’m going with Gormley (8-1) who is a Grade 1 winner already and has made a career of bouncing back off disappointing efforts. He has the class to best the field and is due for yet another strong effort to back up a poor one.
I like Lookin at Lee (5-1) to get second. He has been competitive in the other two Jewels and is a good bet to be so again Saturday. The favorite Irish War Cry (7-2) is my pick to claim the show spot.
He is another entry that has shown resilience in the past and should easily best his tenth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby.
Enjoy the race and good luck!
