HISTORY: Iowa and Wisconsin have met in nearly every season since 1924 for the Heartland Trophy. Wisconsin leads the all-time series 49-44-2 after winning four of the last five matchups.
Wisconsin Badgers
Wisconsin responded to a 2-3 start by winning three of their last four games. The Badgers picked up a much-needed, 35-point win over Northwestern, but a double overtime loss to Michigan State would be the end of result of Week 7. Jim Leonhard’s team jumped back to .500 after beating Purdue at home, and they keep things going at Camp Randall last weekend.
In Week 10, Wisconsin defeated Maryland at home, 23-10, improving to 3-4 ATS this season.
Wisconsin is scoring 30.8 points per game, while allowing 20.5 ppg.
Graham Mertz will make his 30th start of his career this weekend. The three-year starter has been pedestrian at times this year, but he’s also been serviceable and protected the football. Mertz is the epitome of Wisconsin football, and he’s thrown for 1,707 passing yards, with a career-best 17 touchdowns to six interceptions through nine games.
The run game has long been a staple of the Wisconsin program. From Ron Dayne to Jonathan Taylor, the Badgers have always produced pro-ready backs. Braelon Allen appears to be the next great back in line. The sophomore running back has really got it going since the start of Big Ten play, surpassing the 120-yard mark in four of the last five games. Allen leads the Badgers with 989 rushing yards and ten scores.
Third-year wideout Chimere Dike leads the team in receptions (35), receiving yards (555), and touchdowns (six).
Iowa Hawkeyes
Iowa jumped out to a brutal start to Big Ten play after a 2-1 start. The Hawkeyes opened with a win over Rutgers, but the month of October ended up being spooky for them. Three straight losses to Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio State would send them into a must-win homecoming game against Northwestern. Kirk Ferentz’ team prevailed, and their effort last weekend may have been their most impressive of the season.
In Week 10, Iowa defeated Purdue in West Lafayette, 24-3, jumping back above .500. and improving to 5-4 ATS this season.
Iowa scores 17.2 points per game, while allowing 14.1 ppg.
Spencer Petras has put together back-to-back solid outings after a disaster against Ohio State. The three-year starter threw for 220 yards and a score against Northwestern, and he tossed multiple touchdowns for the first time in the road win over Purdue. Petras has passed for 1,401 yards with five touchdowns to five interceptions on the season.
The run game was a staple of what Iowa loved to do, but there’s been minimal push up front this season. It’s extremely uncharacteristic, but Kaleb Johnson was able to restore of that glory last weekend versus Purdue. The freshman back ran for a season-high 200 yards, and he now leads Iowa with 548 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Sam LaPorta has been one of the few lone spots on this Iowa offense. LaPorta posted season-highs of nine catches and 101 yards versus Illinois, and he gained 55 yards against OSU last weekend. LaPorta leads the team in receptions (44) and receiving yards (458).
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends

Free Week 11 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
It’s unreal how much these two schools match up on paper.
Wisconsin and Iowa represent two of most physical teams in the nation, they both defend extremely well, and they both are dealing with an incompetent third year starter at quarterback. This one has the makings of a nasty Big Ten battle, and while the under feels like a very logical play here, the Badgers have been the noticeably better team. The Hawkeyes have failed to establish a run game this season, while the Badgers have been revving thing up on the ground over the past month.
Take Wisconsin’s road spread here, or role with the vintage Big Ten battle in one of the conference’s classic matchups.
