The Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky make the trip west to do battle with a UTEP Miners team that, sadly, has been one of the worst in all college football. With over 120 teams in the Bowl Subdivision, it’s a dubious distinction, but Texas-El Paso have been embarrassed from the word ‘go’ in 2017, which led to head coach Sean Kugler stepping down this past week. Former head coach Mike Price, who stewarded over more pleasant times in West Texas, is back on an interim basis.

The Hilltoppers haven’t world beaters, to be sure – a 2-2 record in the Conference USA won’t turn many heads – but the visitors should have enough to despatch a UTEP squad that continues to struggle mightily at 0-5, with all the losses being thorough defeats.
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
Western Kentucky and Texas-El Paso are both 0-1 in the C-USA thus far, but the visiting Hilltoppers also have two decent wins on their slate, over Eastern Kentucky and Ball State. The ‘Toppers also just came up short against Louisiana Tech, losing 23-22. Western Kentucky has shown enough to prove it can be a plucky competitor in the Conference USA, particularly with its defense, which is only surrendering 20 points per game on average.

WKU’s opponent this week labors to score points, so it is probably a match made in Heaven for the visitors. Senior QB Mike White leads the way for the Hilltoppers, with a passing attack that is equitable in how White spreads the ball around – four different receivers have at least 12 receptions and at least 150 yards receiving already. Sophomore Lucky Jackson leads the line with 20 grabs for 253 yards and one TD on the season.
UTEP Miners
Unfortunately, the Miners struggle to score and they can stop being scored on – you aren’t going to win a lot of football games that way.
It’s not just that UTEP are winless so far, it’s that the Miners have lost all five games so decisively. The closest contest was a 35-21 loss to Army last week, and nobody is confusing Army for Clemson. The Miners have given up 56 points to Oklahoma and 63 points to the Arizona Wildcats – yikes. They rank in the bottom tenth of the FBS statistically in every team category on both sides of the ball. I would give you some optimism here if there were any to project.

For those desperate to grab at a wispy silver lining, perhaps the Miners start playing better under their new (old) coach Price. It was clear that Kugler’s message was falling on deaf ears; even if your football program has a deficit in talent compared to other top-division sides, you’d hope for at least a close game or two on effort alone. Maybe a fresh voice in the locker room is just what these downtrodden players need? Give me something, Miners!

Visiting QB White should be able to whip the ball around judiciously in the thin air and sunny skies of the Sun Bowl in El Paso. A thriving west Texas city, college football is not one of the elite draws lately. Expect those aformentioned four Western Kentucky pass-catchers (Jackson along with Nacarius Fant, Xavier Lane and Deon Yelder) to be involved early and often.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Western Kentucky -21
There is a large point spread posted for this Saturday evening match-up, and for good reason.
If the home team UTEP Miners can keep this to within a two-score game, they should consider that a small personal victory; perhaps something they can build on in the 2017 season and (perhaps already) looking forward to 2018. Good luck, Coach Price.
