The San Jose State Spartans picked up their first win of the season in week 9 before their game with Wyoming last weekend. A 24 – 9 loss to the Cowboys in Laramie now has Sparty reeling at 1 – 8 on the season.
San Jose State was left scoreless in the first half last weekend against Wyoming, and the offense really never found its legs. The Spartans offensive line had no success trying to run the ball against the Cowboys, picking up only 71 yards on 24 carries on the day. In direct correlation, the Cowboys only completed 4 passes, because their running game put up 424 yards on 64 carries against the Spartans defense.

The Utah State Aggies lost 38 – 31 on opening weekend to Michigan State, and have now ran off 8 straight wins entering week 11 of the season. After a convincing 56 – 17 win over Hawaii last weekend, the concern now lies with the health of QB Jordan Love. Freshmen QB Henry Colombi relieved Love after a head injury, and Love’s status is unclear for this weekend’s game.
San Jose State Spartans
You read that right people, because that Spartans defense got man-handled by the Wyoming offensive line last weekend. San Jose State ranks 110th in the nation against the run, but the Cowboys put a huge dent in that number after gaining 424 yards on the ground last weekend.
After a 50 point performance against UNLV, the Spartans were hoping QB Josh Love had turned a corner. Outside of the Hawaii and UNLV games this season, Love has struggled with his receiving crew most the season.
Love has completed 56% of his passes overall, but he has registered under 50% in three of his 7 starts in 2018.
While Head Coach Brent Brennan’s offense continues to find a flow, the defensive side of the ball is a major issue. San Jose State has allowed 31 or more points in 7 of their 9 games this season, and rank 114th in total yards allowed per game (462.1).

Last weekend, Wyoming pretty much lined up and told the Spartans they were running the ball. I think I heard Wyoming QB Sean Chambers come to line and just yell out, “Run to the right on 2”, and the Spartans still couldn’t stop it.
Kidding aside, the Spartans might be on their way to a 1 – 11 season, having Utah State, Nevada and Fresno State left to play.
Utah State Aggies
Jordan Love has the Aggies offense ranked 2nd in the nation in scoring, putting up 50.2 points a game. Love was force to leave the Hawaii game, and freshmen Henry Colombi came in to the finish the 56- 17 road win. Colombi was efficient enough to close out the game, going 9 for 11 with 48 yards to his credit. He was not asked to do much, however, although he may be getting his first start of his young career this weekend.
In all honesty, if there was ever a game to sit your star QB and give your backup some experience. this would be that game. The San Jose State defense might not be the toughest challenge the Aggies will face as they chase a conference title. The Aggies will have to close out the regular season with a two-game road trip to Colorado State and Boise State after their final home game of the season this weekend.
Utah State put up 426 rushing yards of their own last weekend against Hawaii, so that tells you they should plan to continue that trend against a San Jose State defense that just got trampled on by Wyoming last weekend.

That indeed gives Matt Wells the luxury of possibly resting Jordan Love for this contest. The road trip to Boise State and a possible conference title game appearance will be when Love’s influence will be most needed.
The Aggies put up a total of 601 yards last weekend against Hawaii, although they committed 12 penalties and had three fumbles forced against them. That will have to be cleaned up as they navigate their final three games of the season.
The play for me goes towards the total, as Utah State should once again run the ball early and often. San Jose State cannot stop the run, and Utah State should be able to make them pay for it.

With or without Jordan Love, the Aggies offense should plan to run the ball, and then run the ball again and again. I expect another 55+ carries to come out of the Aggie back field, and that bodes well when you are playing the Spartans.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: The Utah State Aggies are favored at -31, with a 63.5 showing on the total. Free ATS or O/U final score pick provided below!
