Although the line isn’t currently set at the time of this publication, you can expect that the Cougars’ high-octane offense will look to put up big numbers in Week 1 of the new season.
Portland State
A new era of Portland State football is about to begin in Week 1 with the season opener against the Washington State Cougars. Nigel Burton is out as the program’s head coach, and Bruce Barnum is in to lead this group to bigger and better things than the former, who went just 21-36 during his time with the team.
The goal for this squad is to become a relevant program for the first time in quite a while. This squad has just one winning season in its last eight years.

Although this game isn’t going to determine the outcome of the 2015 season for Portland State, it will provide a good benchmark for what is to come.
The Vikings lost to the Cougs 59-21 last season, and the hope is that they can put together a more competitive showing this time around.
Washington State
When the Cougars qualified and participated in a bowl game in 2013, there’s a good chance they overachieved and weren’t quite ready for the competitive play that was to come the following year.
This is evidenced pretty clearly by the 3-9 season they had in 2014.

Although a win over Portland State isn’t going to be what truly sparks the flame for success, a loss would be devastating to the confidence of this program and its players so early in the year.
The Cougars need to get back to that level of success they found in 2013, and chances are, they’re taking an inferior opponent quite seriously following the disastrous turnaround last year.

Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction
The Cougs are down following last season’s disappointment, and the Vikings are ready to begin a new era. Will that result in a major upset in Week 1?
Not likely.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: OFF
Give this one to the Cougars by a large margin. The Vikings simply don’t have the talent to keep up with the high-scoring offense that Mike Leach has, and while Washington State will likely deal with hiccups from a new quarterback at times throughout the contest, it won’t likely be enough of a problem to threaten this contest at at point in the process.
Week 1 Score Prediction: Washington State 40 – Portland State 14
