Wolverines Stats
Michigan has scored 115 points through five games, averaging 23 per contest. The Wolverines have generated 904 passing yards and 676 rushing yards. Their offense has struggled to establish consistency in either phase.
Jordan Marshall leads the rushing attack with 244 yards and three TD’s. JJ Buchanan has contributed 446 receiving yards and four TD’s.
Michigan needs better blocking to get more production from its available playmakers.
Michigan’s defense is doing its job, but the offense needs to give it something worth protecting.
The Wolverines have allowed 79 points through five games. Their defense has recorded 11 sacks, four interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Linebacker Troy Bowles is an important part of Michigan’s defensive front. His ability to attack downhill makes him particularly effective against opponents struggling to establish the run.
Michigan has also dealt with injuries along its offensive line. Andrew Babalola has returned to practice but remains questionable, adding another consideration to the Wolverines’ blocking plans. Whittingham needs more dependable execution up front against Penn State.
Nittany Lions Stats
Penn State has scored 183 points through six games, averaging better than 30 per contest. The Nittany Lions have accumulated 1,507 passing yards and 850 rushing yards. Their offensive production has become less reliable against Big Ten opponents.
James Peoples has rushed for 232 yards and two TD’s. Chase Sowell leads the receivers with 23 catches for 359 yards and two TD’s.
Penn State needs more production from its running backs to create manageable passing situations.
The Nittany Lions have allowed 111 points through six games. Their defense has recorded eight sacks and five interceptions.
Linebacker Tony Rojas leads Penn State with 43 tackles, including eight tackles for loss. He has also recorded four sacks and two interceptions.
Receiver Koby Howard remains unavailable, limiting Penn State’s offensive depth. The Nittany Lions have also dealt with other injuries throughout the roster. Campbell needs his available players to execute more consistently against Michigan’s physical defense.
Nittany Lions vs. Wolverines QB Matchup
Michigan QB Bryce Underwood has thrown for 881 yards through five games. He has five TD passes and four interceptions. His decision-making has been inconsistent during the Wolverines’ offensive struggles.
Underwood has attempted 113 passes and completed approximately 59% of them. He has also rushed for 212 yards and two TD’s.
His mobility gives Michigan another option when passing plays break down.
Whittingham has confirmed Underwood remains Michigan’s starting quarterback. Backup Tommy Carr has received additional practice repetitions, but the Wolverines are staying with their starter.
Penn State QB Rocco Becht has thrown for 1,397 yards through six games. He has 11 TD passes against three interceptions. His experience gives the Nittany Lions a capable passer despite their recent struggles.
Becht has attempted 166 passes this season. His performance against USC showed improvement after difficult conference outings.

“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Underwood is the greater rushing threat, while Becht has been the more productive passer. Both quarterbacks need better support from their offensive lines.
Michigan will try to disrupt Becht before he can work through his progressions. Penn State must account for Underwood’s ability to escape the pocket. Defensive discipline will matter when either quarterback extends a play.
Neither offense can afford another afternoon of stalled drives and avoidable mistakes.
Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Michigan Wolverines bottom line: Michigan’s defensive strength and Penn State’s protection problems give the Wolverines an advantage, provided their offense avoids costly mistakes.

Nittany Lions Wolverines Free Pick: Michigan -6.5
Here is my Nittany Lions Wolverines free pick: I’m backing Big Blue -6.5. Laying nearly a TD with an inconsistent offense isn’t comfortable, but Penn State hasn’t shown it can handle sustained defensive pressure.
Michigan has the personnel to make the Nittany Lions earn every yard.
The Wolverines don’t need Underwood throwing the ball all over Michigan Stadium. They need a clean game, effective early-down rushing and enough field position to keep Penn State from dictating the pace. That is a reasonable assignment coming off a bye.
Michigan’s defense can create the scoring separation that its offense hasn’t consistently delivered on its own.
Penn State has struggled to establish its running game against conference opponents. If the Nittany Lions are forced to rely on Becht in obvious passing situations, Michigan can attack rather than sit back and protect against big plays. The biggest danger to this bet is Michigan giving away possessions. Whittingham has had an extra week to address the offensive mistakes, and this is the kind of matchup where a more disciplined approach can produce a comfortable win.
I don’t need a spectacular afternoon from Underwood; I need the Wolverines to stop helping opponents.
The defense sets the terms, the offense does enough, and Michigan -6.5 gets the job done.
