Black Knights Stats
Army has rushed for 1,671 yards through five games, averaging better than 333 per contest. The Black Knights rank among the nation’s most productive rushing offenses. Monken’s option attack forces defenders to account for multiple ball carriers on every snap.
Samari Howard has contributed 304 rushing yards and one TD. Zach Mundell has added 189 yards and three TD’s.
Army’s backfield provides several options beyond its quarterback.
Army’s ground game is a serious problem, but its limited passing attack leaves little room for mistakes.
The Black Knights have allowed 96 points through five games. Their defense has recorded four sacks and one interception.
Army held Tulane to 17 points in its latest victory. The Black Knights also controlled possession for more than 35 minutes in that contest.
Running back Godspower Nwawuihe has dealt with an injury, while JT Poynton and Kai Woolfolk have appeared on availability reports. Their final status remains worth watching. Army needs dependable depth against Florida Atlantic’s passing attack.

Owls vs. Black Knights QB Matchup

Hellums is the greater rushing threat, while Veltkamp is the more accomplished passer. Both quarterbacks operate in systems designed around their strengths.
Army will try to make Veltkamp uncomfortable by limiting Florida Atlantic’s running game. The Owls must contain Hellums without allowing the pitch man to reach the perimeter. Both defenses face difficult assignments against contrasting offensive systems.
The quarterback who handles pressure and avoids mistakes will give his team an important advantage.
Florida Atlantic Owls vs. Army Black Knights bottom line: Army’s option attack will test Florida Atlantic’s defensive discipline, while Veltkamp’s passing ability gives the Owls a dangerous counterattack.

Owls Black Knights Free Pick: FAU +2.5
Here is my Owls Black Knights free pick: I’m taking FAU +2.5. Army is dangerous at home, but this is a short number against an Owls offense that can score without needing lengthy possessions. Florida Atlantic has also had an extra week to prepare, which matters against an option attack that punishes poor assignments.
Army always wants to dictate tempo, drain the clock and make every possession count. That approach can win games, but it also leaves a short favorite vulnerable when the opponent can answer quickly. I’m not giving Army extra credit simply for keeping the ball longer.
My betting edge is FAU’s ability to turn limited possessions into points against an Army defense that has struggled with explosive plays.
The Owls have to be disciplined against the option, particularly on the perimeter. If they force Army into a few passing situations and avoid turnovers themselves, they have a legitimate chance to win outright.
Army doesn’t have much room for error when it falls behind. Florida Atlantic’s 4-0 ATS run supports my play, but I’m buying the matchup rather than chasing a streak. The Owls have the better passing attack, a week of additional preparation and a price that doesn’t require them to win. Florida Atlantic Owls +2.5 is my play, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Knights spend the 4th trying to catch them.
