Mountaineers Stats
West Virginia has rushed for 1,773 yards through six games, averaging nearly 296 per contest. The Mountaineers have built their offense around a high-volume ground attack. Their running game is capable of producing explosive gains without relying on traditional passing situations.
Cam Cook leads the backfield with 793 rushing yards and seven TD’s. He’s carried the ball 153 times and averages better than five yards per attempt.
Cook’s workload gives Rodriguez a reliable option on early downs.
West Virginia’s ground game is productive, but its defense has allowed opponents far too much freedom.
The Mountaineers have surrendered 196 points, an average approaching 33 per game. They’ve recorded 13 sacks but haven’t consistently prevented opponents from sustaining drives.
DJ Epps leads the receiving corps with 393 yards and four TD’s. His ability to stretch coverage prevents defenses from committing every available defender to the running game.
West Virginia needs better tackling and more dependable third-down stops to complement its offense.
Bearcats Stats
Cincinnati has scored 169 points through five games, averaging nearly 34 per contest. The Bearcats have produced 984 passing yards and 1,154 rushing yards. Their offensive line has been a strength when Cincinnati establishes the running game.
Gi’Bran Payne leads the backfield with 392 yards and two TD’s. Cole Tabb has added 330 rushing yards and six TD’s, giving Cincinnati another productive option.
The Bearcats have the personnel to attack defenses without relying entirely on the pass.
Defensively, Cincinnati has allowed 116 points and recorded 11 sacks. The Bearcats have also intercepted four passes.
JV Gibson leads the receivers with 267 yards and three TD’s. His downfield ability gives Cincinnati an alternative when opponents crowd the line of scrimmage.
Jonathan Thompson has recorded 37 tackles, while Josh Hough has three sacks. The defensive front must handle West Virginia’s volume without sacrificing containment. Cincinnati cannot afford repeated missed assignments against the Mountaineers’ option looks.
Bearcats vs. Mountaineers QB Matchup
West Virginia QB Michael Hawkins Jr. has thrown for 1,055 yards through six games. He has seven TD passes against one interception. His running ability is an even bigger part of the Mountaineers’ attack.
Hawkins has completed 58 of 111 passes and rushed for 672 yards with 12 TD’s. His accuracy has been uneven, but his speed creates problems for defenders responsible for both coverage and run support.
Backup Scotty Fox Jr. has attempted four passes for 27 yards.

Cincinnati QB JC French IV has thrown for 949 yards and six TD’s without an interception. He’s completed 86 of 123 passes through five games. His ball security has helped Cincinnati maintain offensive balance.
French has also contributed 193 rushing yards and five TD’s. His mobility gives the Bearcats another threat around the goal line.
Liam O’Brien has completed all five of his passes for 18 yards in limited action.
French is the more accurate passer, while Hawkins is the more explosive runner. Cincinnati must maintain disciplined rush lanes against West Virginia’s QB.
West Virginia will try to disrupt French before he settles into rhythm. The Bearcats need protection that allows him to work through his reads without abandoning the running game.
Cincinnati Bearcats vs. West Virginia Mountaineers bottom line: Both quarterbacks can hurt defenses with their legs, but the team that tackles better and avoids unnecessary mistakes will have the advantage in Morgantown.

Bearcats Mountaineers Free Pick: Under 63.5
Here is my Bearcats Mountaineers free pick: I’m on the Under 63.5. UWV has gone Over in all six games, but that streak doesn’t automatically make another shootout the right bet. Cincinnati has the offensive line and running backs to control possessions, and I expect a more deliberate approach coming off the bye.
West Virginia’s defensive problems are obvious, but Cincinnati doesn’t need to rush its offense to exploit them. The Bearcats can run effectively, stay ahead of the chains and keep the clock working.
I’m more concerned about explosive plays than sustained drives.
The Under cashes if Cincinnati controls the football and makes West Virginia earn its TD’s without short fields.
Rodriguez will push the tempo, and that’s the biggest threat to this bet. Cincinnati has to tackle cleanly on first down, keep the Mountaineers from breaking long runs and avoid giving Hawkins extra possessions through turnovers.
A defensive masterpiece isn’t required with a total this high.
I can live with West Virginia moving the football because this number allows both teams to score. What I won’t pay for is the assumption that six consecutive Overs mean a seventh is coming.
Give me the Bearcats controlling enough of the game to keep this below 64, and I’ll take Under 63.5 before the sportsbooks adjust to that possibility.
