Cavaliers vs. Mustangs Gameday
The Virginia Cavaliers visit the No. 24 SMU Mustangs on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on The CW. Both teams enter this ACC matchup at 2-1 in conference play.
Tony Elliott’s Cavaliers are 4-2 overall and coming off a home victory. Virginia is still looking for its first road win after losing its opening two away games.
The Cavaliers face their first ranked opponent of the season.
SMU owns the home-field advantage, but Virginia’s defense presents a legitimate challenge to the Mustangs’ passing attack.
Rhett Lashlee’s Mustangs are 4-1 overall and riding a two-game winning streak. SMU returns from a bye week with extra time to prepare.
The Mustangs have won nine consecutive ACC home games since joining the conference. Virginia has beaten a ranked opponent away from home in each of the last three seasons. Something has to give Saturday.
It’s Week 7, Virginia Cavaliers vs. SMU Mustangs, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Virginia’s other defeat came against West Virginia, 38-27.

Mustangs Stats
SMU has scored 173 points through five games, averaging nearly 35 per contest. The Mustangs have produced 1,705 passing yards and 691 rushing yards. Their passing attack accounts for most of their offensive production.
Kendrick Raphael leads the backfield with 418 rushing yards and six TD’s. Yamir Knight has caught 29 passes for 367 yards and two TD’s.
SMU has enough receiving depth to challenge opponents across the field.
The Mustangs can generate explosive plays, but their red-zone execution has not matched their yardage production.
Defensively, SMU has allowed 115 points and recorded 17 sacks. The Mustangs have also intercepted two passes.
Marques White has been productive off the edge, leading the team with four sacks. SMU’s pressure can force opponents into hurried decisions and difficult third downs.
The Mustangs need that defensive front to maintain its effectiveness against Virginia.
Cavaliers Stats
Virginia has scored 197 points through six games, averaging nearly 33 per contest. The Cavaliers have accumulated 1,305 passing yards and 977 rushing yards. Their offense has struggled with consistency against stronger defenses.
Jekail Middlebrook leads the rushing attack with 337 yards and three TD’s. Kameron Courtney has 204 receiving yards, while Da’Shawn Martin has five TD catches.
Virginia’s offensive line needs to improve after a difficult stretch protecting the passer.
The Cavaliers have allowed 115 points and recorded 13 sacks. Virginia has also intercepted seven passes, making its secondary one of the defense’s strengths.
Cornerback Omillio Agard is out for the season, and receiver Rico Flores Jr. is unavailable. Safety Brandyn Hillman’s status also bears watching.
Virginia has several defensive absences heading into Saturday. The Cavaliers need their available players to tackle cleanly and avoid coverage breakdowns. Depth could become a factor against SMU’s passing attack.
Cavaliers vs. Mustangs QB Matchup
SMU QB Kevin Jennings has completed 117 of 156 passes for 1,588 yards. He has thrown 14 TD’s and five interceptions. His 75% completion rate reflects the efficiency of the Mustangs’ passing attack.
Jennings has made 31 career starts and is comfortable directing Lashlee’s offense. He can attack downfield when opponents fail to generate pressure.
Backup Ty Hawkins has completed 11 of 13 passes for 104 yards and two TD’s.
Virginia QB Beau Pribula has completed 91 of 137 passes for 1,080 yards. He has thrown 13 TD’s against one interception. His mobility gives the Cavaliers an additional option when plays break down.
Pribula has been effective protecting the football, although pass protection has been an issue. Virginia needs to keep him out of obvious passing situations.
Eli Holstein has thrown for 180 yards and three TD’s in limited backup action.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Jennings has the stronger passing production, while Pribula offers Virginia a different style of quarterback play. Both starters have enough experience to recognize pressure and adjust their protections.
SMU will try to make Pribula operate from a crowded pocket. Virginia needs to disrupt Jennings without exposing its depleted secondary.
Those assignments will put considerable pressure on both offensive lines.
Virginia Cavaliers vs. SMU Mustangs bottom line: SMU has the superior passing attack and home-field advantage, but Virginia’s ability to protect Pribula and defend explosive plays will determine how competitive this ACC matchup becomes.

Cavaliers Mustangs Free Pick: Under 52.5
Here is my Cavaliers Mustangs free pick: I’m betting Under 52.5. SMU has the passing attack to threaten this total, but Virginia’s ability to defend through the air gives the Cavaliers a chance to limit explosive plays. The Mustangs will have to earn their points with sustained drives.
Virginia’s offensive protection is the bigger reason I like the Under. Against an aggressive SMU front, the Cavaliers could spend too many possessions trying to recover from negative plays.
SMU’s red-zone execution also matters when we’re dealing with a total above 50.
My edge is fewer clean scoring opportunities, particularly when Virginia has the football.
The Mustangs are capable of winning comfortably without turning this into a shootout. Virginia needs to establish its running game, shorten possessions and avoid giving Jennings additional opportunities.
I’m not counting on both offenses operating at their season averages.
SMU can control the game while Virginia struggles to finish drives, and that combination keeps 52.5 within reach. The danger is a turnover-driven scoring burst, but I’m backing the defensive pressure and Virginia’s offensive limitations to keep the final below the number. Under 52.5 is where I’m putting my money.
