Wildcats vs. Spartans Gameday
The No. 25 Northwestern Wildcats visit the Michigan State Spartans on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Kickoff is scheduled for noon ET on Peacock at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. Both teams are trying to improve their position in the Big Ten.
David Braun’s Wildcats are 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Northwestern has won its last two games but lost its only road contest.
The Wildcats are looking for their first road victory.
Northwestern has the better record, but Pat Fitzgerald knows the program he once coached for 17 seasons.
Fitzgerald’s Spartans enter at 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten. Michigan State has lost four straight after winning its first two games.
Northwestern QB Aidan Chiles also returns to the stadium where he previously started for Michigan State. Both sidelines know the personal history surrounding this matchup. Once the game starts, execution will matter considerably more.
It’s Week 7, Northwestern Wildcats vs. Michigan State Spartans, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Spartans Stats
Michigan State has scored 128 points through six games, averaging 21.3 per contest. The Spartans have accumulated 1,125 passing yards and 743 rushing yards. Their offense has struggled to sustain production against stronger competition.
Jaziun Patterson has rushed for 255 yards and five TD’s. Rodney Bullard Jr. has caught 19 passes for 242 yards and a TD.
Michigan State needs more consistent blocking to support its skill players.
The Spartans have shown offensive potential, but their defensive inconsistency has made winning Big Ten games difficult.
Michigan State has allowed 154 points, an average of 25.7 per game. The Spartans have recorded seven sacks and two interceptions.
Cam Edwards is out for the season with a knee injury. His absence has reduced Michigan State’s backfield depth.
Fitzgerald needs better tackling and more third-down stops from his defense.
Wildcats Stats
Northwestern has scored 177 points through five games, averaging 35.4 per contest. The Wildcats have produced 1,172 passing yards and 1,015 rushing yards. Chip Kelly’s offense has been effective through both approaches.
Caleb Komolafe leads the rushing attack with 334 yards and three TD’s. Joseph Himon II has provided additional production in the backfield.
The Wildcats average 203 rushing yards per game.
Defensively, Northwestern has allowed 81 points, averaging 16.2 per contest. The Wildcats have recorded eight sacks, six interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
Robert Fitzgerald returned an interception for a TD against Ball State. Michael Kilbane has also been an important contributor along the defensive front.
Griffin Wilde leads Northwestern with 425 receiving yards and three TD’s. His ability to stretch coverage gives the offense another way to create explosive plays. The Wildcats have several options beyond their running game.
Wildcats vs. Spartans QB Matchup
Michigan State QB Alessio Milivojevic has completed 102 of 155 passes for 1,047 yards. He has thrown five TD’s and three interceptions. His completion rate is approximately 66%.
Milivojevic completed 22 of 26 passes against Illinois. He also threw two TD’s without an interception.
That performance was an encouraging development for Michigan State.
Backup Cam Fancher has attempted 11 passes for 59 yards this season. He has been dealing with a knee injury.
Milivojevic remains the primary option under center.
Northwestern QB Aidan Chiles has completed 80 of 112 passes for 1,172 yards. He has thrown nine TD’s without an interception. His 71% completion rate reflects much better decision-making this season.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Chiles has also rushed for six TD’s. His ability to finish drives with his legs adds another dimension to Northwestern’s offense.
The Wildcats have received consistent production from their starter.
Nicco Marchiol provides depth behind Chiles. His passing opportunities have been limited, with one attempt and no completions.
Michigan State has familiarity with Chiles from his time in East Lansing. Northwestern’s current offensive scheme, however, asks him to make different reads and distribute the football more efficiently.
Milivojevic will need to handle Northwestern’s pressure without forcing throws. Chiles faces the challenge of maintaining his efficiency against defenders familiar with his abilities.
Northwestern Wildcats vs. Michigan State Spartans bottom line: Northwestern has the more efficient offense and stronger scoring defense, while Michigan State needs a complete performance to challenge the ranked Wildcats.
Northwestern Wildcats vs. Michigan State Spartans Football Betting Trends

- Plus, Northwestern is 2-0-1 on over/under after a win in their last 3 games in 2026.

- Michigan State is 8-3 against the spread as underdogs in their last 11 games from 2025 to 2026.
- Also, the Spartans are 6-3 against the spread after a loss in their last 9 games from 2025 to 2026.
- Michigan State is 10-5 against the spread in all games in their last 15 outings from 2025 to 2026.
Wildcats Spartans Free Pick: Northwestern -7.5
Here is my Wildcats Spartans free pick: I’m laying it with the Cats -7.5. Michigan State has struggled to stop sustained drives, and Northwestern has the offensive balance to exploit that weakness. I see the Wildcats creating enough separation to cover more than a touchdown.
The Spartans need an efficient start to stay competitive. Their problems on early downs have repeatedly put the defense in difficult situations.
That is no way to protect a home underdog.
Northwestern’s edge is its ability to control possessions and turn field position into a two-score advantage.
Michigan State nearly stole one against Illinois, so the Wildcats cannot coast. Northwestern needs to finish drives rather than settle for FG’s.
The half-point above seven is the biggest concern.
I’m expecting Northwestern to establish the run, force Michigan State into predictable passing situations and keep pressure on the Spartans throughout the second half. That is a stronger case than betting on another close finish simply because Michigan State is at home.
I’ll give the TD and the hook with Northwestern -7.5.
