Eagles vs. Monarchs Gameday
The Georgia Southern Eagles visit the Old Dominion Monarchs on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at S.B. Ballard Stadium in Norfolk, Virginia. Kickoff is 7:30 PM ET on ESPN2. Both Sun Belt teams enter Week 7 at 2-4 overall. Georgia Southern is 1-1 in conference play, while Old Dominion is 1-2. Both programs are 1-2 at home and 1-2 on the road.
Consistency hasn’t exactly been a team strength.
Two struggling Sun Belt programs meet Thursday, with both desperate to make something of October.
Clay Helton’s Eagles have lost four of five games. Ricky Rahne’s Monarchs snapped a four-game losing streak last weekend.
Georgia Southern wants to build on its competitive performances against difficult opponents. Old Dominion needs to establish some offensive confidence. Neither coaching staff is running short of film-room material.
It’s Week 7, Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Old Dominion Monarchs, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Old Dominion Monarchs Odds & Previous Games
The supplied opening moneylines favor Georgia Southern at -182, with Old Dominion at +151. The Eagles are laying 3.5 points. The total is 47.5.
Georgia Southern lost 27-24 to James Madison, 42-28 to Houston, 31-27 to Jacksonville State and 22-7 to Clemson. Its victory during that stretch came against Coastal Carolina, 31-24.
Those narrow defeats have been especially irritating.
Old Dominion beat Appalachian State 10-3 after losses to Georgia State 42-10, James Madison 46-20, East Carolina 20-17 and Virginia Tech 44-21. The Monarchs held Appalachian State to 158 yards and forced three turnovers. That’s one way to make a defensive coordinator sleep better.
Old Dominion has won three straight meetings, including 45-10 in 2025 and 47-19 in 2024. The Monarchs also won 20-17 in 2023.

Monarchs Stats
Old Dominion has scored 109 points through six games, averaging 18.2. The Monarchs have produced 861 passing yards and 735 rushing yards. Their offense has struggled to maintain consistent production.
Defensively, Old Dominion has surrendered 165 points, or 27.5 per game. The Monarchs have intercepted four passes and recovered seven fumbles.
Those takeaways have helped rescue some difficult afternoons.
Devin Roche leads the rushing attack with 348 yards. His physical style gives the Monarchs an option between the tackles.
TJ Johnson has caught 14 passes for 179 yards and two TD’s. He’s been among the more productive receivers. The passing game could certainly use additional help.
JJ Harrell has been listed out, while other injuries have complicated the team’s available personnel.
Eagles Stats
Georgia Southern has scored 148 points through six games, averaging 24.7. The Eagles have surrendered 146 points, or 24.3 per contest. Those numbers reflect a team that’s been competitive without consistently finishing games. David Mbadinga has rushed for 233 yards but is listed out with an undisclosed injury. His absence creates another opportunity in the backfield.
Somebody will need to make the most of it.
Georgia Southern has capable offensive weapons, but losing backfield depth puts more responsibility on the remaining playmakers.
Josh Dallas leads the receiving corps with 37 catches for 290 yards. Alex Taylor has added 267 yards and three TD’s.
The Eagles have distributed receiving opportunities across several targets. That gives the passing game flexibility when opponents focus on one player. It also makes preparation a little less pleasant for defensive coordinators.
Georgia Southern has recorded 15 sacks through six games, already exceeding its total from last season.
Eagles vs. Monarchs QB Matchup
Quinn Henicle has thrown for 570 yards, three TD’s and four interceptions in five games. He’s completed 48 of 88 passes. His status for Thursday remains questionable because of an undisclosed injury. Henicle has also contributed 323 rushing yards and four TD’s. That mobility makes him an important part of Old Dominion’s offensive approach.
Assuming he’s available, of course.
Ryan Huff offers an alternative if Henicle cannot play. Huff has thrown for 279 yards, one TD and one interception in three appearances. His most extensive action came against James Madison.
Georgia Southern’s Max Johnson has thrown for 1,572 yards, 11 TD’s and two interceptions. He’s completed 148 of 224 passes through six games.
That’s substantial production from an experienced passer.
Johnson has delivered three passing TD’s in three consecutive games, a first in Georgia Southern program history. His accuracy has given the Eagles a dependable aerial attack. The challenge is converting that production into more victories.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Turner Helton has seen limited action behind Johnson, throwing for 70 yards in one appearance. The Eagles have relied primarily on their veteran starter.
Old Dominion’s QB decision could alter its offensive approach. Georgia Southern enters with greater continuity at the position.
The contrast is difficult to miss.
Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Old Dominion Monarchs bottom line: Georgia Southern brings an established passing leader, while Old Dominion must settle its quarterback situation and find steadier offensive execution.
Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Old Dominion Monarchs Football Betting Trends
- Georgia Southern is strong as a favorite, winning 25 of their last 29 games straight up.
- They also cover the spread well as favorites, going 7-0 against the spread in their last 7 games.
- After a loss, the Eagles have covered the spread in 11 of their last 14 games.
- Old Dominion has done well at home, winning 7 of their last 9 home games straight up.
- Additionally, the Monarchs cover the spread as underdogs, with a 17-9 record in their last 26 games.
- Old Dominion has gone over the total in 5 of their last 6 games as underdogs.
Eagles Monarchs Free Pick: Over 47.5
Here is my Eagles Monarchs free pick: I’m on Over 47.5. Georgia Southern has covered five of six games, and I like its chances of doing enough offensive damage to keep the scoreboard moving. Old Dominion doesn’t have to win a track meet, but it can’t spend the evening treating midfield like the finish line. The Eagles have reached 24 points in four of their six games. That gives this total a reasonable path if the Monarchs contribute their share.
Of course, somebody still has to cross the goal line.
I’m looking for sustained scoring pressure, not a parade of punts dressed up as defensive brilliance.
The number leaves room for a 27-21 finish, and that’s the sort of game I’m buying. Georgia Southern’s pace can make Old Dominion answer rather than spend four quarters protecting field position.
There’s a legitimate concern after the Monarchs’ defensive showing last week. But one terrific afternoon doesn’t automatically turn every Thursday into a defensive clinic. Football has a nasty habit of embarrassing anyone who assumes otherwise.
I don’t need six touchdown passes or a miracle in the final minute.
Give me a competitive second half with both sidelines still calling plays to score.
My ticket doesn’t care which mascot gets the postgame interview.
Over 47.5 is the call.
Let the coaches worry about style points; I’m interested in the actual points.
