The Pittsburgh result ended North Carolina’s two-game losing streak.

Blue Devils Stats
Duke has scored 170 points through five games, averaging 34 per contest. The Blue Devils have accumulated 1,150 passing yards and 1,141 rushing yards. Their offensive balance has been a major factor in their strong start.
Nate Sheppard leads the rushing attack with 743 yards and eight TD’s. He has also contributed as a receiver, making him Duke’s most productive offensive weapon.
Sheppard is questionable for Saturday, leaving Duke with a significant personnel concern.
Duke has enough offensive balance to cause problems, but Sheppard’s availability could change the entire approach.
The Blue Devils have allowed 72 points through five games. Their defense has recorded 11 sacks, one interception and two fumble recoveries.
Jeremiah Hasley leads Duke with 234 receiving yards. Jonah Burton has contributed 202 yards and one TD.
Kicker Cosme Salas is out for the season, forcing an adjustment in the kicking game. Linebacker Elliott Schaper has also been lost for the year. Diaz needs dependable replacements in both areas as conference play becomes more demanding.
Tar Heels Stats
North Carolina has scored 117 points through five games, averaging better than 23 per contest. The Tar Heels have struggled to produce consistent scoring against stronger opponents. Their offense has shown improvement under coordinator Bobby Petrino, but sustained execution remains an issue.
Benjamin Hall leads the running backs with 276 rushing yards. Jordan Shipp has contributed 366 receiving yards without a TD.
North Carolina needs more dependable production on early downs to keep its offense moving.
The Tar Heels have allowed 95 points through five games. Their defense has recorded 12 sacks, four interceptions and three fumble recoveries.
Defensive lineman Xavier Lewis has emerged as one of the ACC’s most productive pass rushers. His ability to create negative plays gives North Carolina a dangerous presence near the line of scrimmage.
The secondary has injury concerns following the Pittsburgh game, including Tre Miller’s absence. That places additional responsibility on less experienced defensive backs. Belichick needs his front seven to reduce the pressure on those replacements.
Tar Heels vs. Blue Devils QB Matchup
Duke QB Walker Eget has thrown for 980 yards through five games. He has seven TD passes against one interception. His production has been uneven despite the Blue Devils’ winning record.
Eget has attempted 134 passes this season. He has generally been more effective when Duke establishes its rushing attack and creates manageable third downs.
His ability to handle pressure will be important against North Carolina’s aggressive defensive front.
North Carolina QB Billy Edwards Jr. has thrown for 1,069 yards through five games. He has eight TD passes and five interceptions. His experience gives the Tar Heels a capable passer, although ball security remains a concern.
Edwards has completed 79 of 132 attempts this season. His connections with North Carolina’s receivers have helped the offense move the football against quality competition.
He needs more consistent protection when opposing defenses bring pressure.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Duke reserve Dan Mahan has thrown for 126 yards and three TD’s in limited action. North Carolina backup Miles O’Neill has attempted six passes for 22 yards.
Eget has protected the football more effectively, while Edwards has carried greater passing responsibility. Both quarterbacks need their offensive lines to prevent obvious passing situations.
Duke will try to establish its rushing attack before asking Eget to challenge coverage downfield. North Carolina must give Edwards time to work through his reads without forcing throws into traffic. Whichever offense handles third downs better will have an important advantage.
North Carolina Tar Heels vs. Duke Blue Devils bottom line: Duke’s rushing strength and North Carolina’s improving defensive front set up a physical rivalry matchup where execution matters more than offensive fireworks.

Tar Heels Blue Devils Free Pick: Under 47.5
Here is my Tar Heels Blue Devils free pick: I’m betting Under 47.5. This total doesn’t require either offense to collapse, but it does require both teams to earn their points.
I like that setup in a rivalry game where neither quarterback has consistently punished quality defenses.
The real value is in the number of scoring opportunities, not simply how many yards these teams produce. Duke has every reason to avoid unnecessary risks, while North Carolina cannot afford to give the Blue Devils easy possessions. I’m expecting both coaches to make their opponents finish drives.
My Under depends on making touchdowns difficult, not on expecting four quarters without offense.
Third-down stops and red-zone D are where this bet gets decided. If a couple of promising drives end in punts or field goals, reaching 48 points becomes a much tougher assignment. Neither offense has earned the benefit of assuming every trip across midfield turns into seven points.
A 24-20 game cashes, and that doesn’t require an especially ugly afternoon from either side. I’m comfortable taking my chances with two teams that have reasons to play carefully and enough defensive ability to punish mistakes.
The Victory Bell can wait for the final whistle; I’ve already made my decision. Follow or fade, but I’m betting on the Under 47.5.
