Anyone that watched Kyle Shurmur play quarterback last season would not even recognize him this year as he has become one of the conference’s best passers.

Kentucky lost a heartbreaker last week to Ole Miss and will look to regroup against a Vanderbilt team that has not won a SEC game yet this season.
Kentucky Wildcats
The Wildcats are sitting at 6-3 overall but have actually underperformed a bit as they are just 2-7 ATS.

The offense has stalled at times this season and it has largely been due to their pass protection. Kentucky has allowed a sack on 8.4% of quarterback dropbacks which is the 25th most in the nation.
They have also regressed running the football – averaging just 4.2 yards per attempt on the ground down from 5.3 last season.
Another area they are struggling is defending the pass which could be problematic against Shurmur this week. Kentucky is allowed opposing quarterbacks to have a 144.8 passer rating – the 28th highest in the nation.
Kentucky will also be going on the road for just the fourth time this season and only the second time since September 23rd.
The Wildcats may be bowl bound but they are going to have their hands full on the road this week against a Vanderbilt team that is hungry for a conference win.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Last season, the Commodores struggled all season long to get the passing game going and that was a big reason for their inconsistency.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
This season has been completely different though. Shurmur is tied for 14th in the nation in passing touchdowns with 20. He has thrown just 3 interceptions and this is after he threw for 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions last season.
Shurmur’s completion percentage is still low (56%) but he is making plays and putting points on the board for the offense.
A big reason for his success is the improved pass protection. Last season, Vanderbilt was allowing a sack on 7.7% of dropbacks. This year, that number is down to 4.2% – a change from 100th in the FBS to 29th.
The run defense has struggled though – allowing 5.5 yards per carry which ranks 119th in the nation. They will be tasked with slowing down Kentucky tailback Benny Snell Jr who has rushed for 175 plus yards in consecutive games.
Shurmur has taken a big step forward this season cutting down on his turnovers. Now would not be the time to regress because Snell Jr will be sure to make the most of any short fields or quick trips back onto the field for the Vanderbilt defense.

Free Week 11 NCAA Football Pick
Vanderbilt is not an explosive offense by any means as Shurmur and tailback Ralph Webb lead a methodical unit. I would expect them and Snell Jr to lead a slow paced game as both teams look to control time of possession to help out their defense.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Under 53
I think the Commodores pick up their first SEC win of the season but the even better play is the under. I expect both offenses to sputter at times with the teams trading punts and field goals for a lot of the game.
