Wildcats Stats
Kansas State has scored 178 points through five games, averaging 35.6 per contest. The Wildcats have generated 1,140 passing yards and 1,080 rushing yards. Their offense has produced strong season totals despite recent inconsistency.
Rodney Fields Jr. has rushed for 320 yards and four TD’s. Jaron Tibbs leads the receiving group with 201 yards and two TD’s.
The Wildcats need more consistent production on first and second down.
Kansas State has offensive talent, but its recent inability to sustain drives has created problems.
Defensively, Kansas State has allowed 96 points and recorded 12 sacks. The Wildcats have recovered three fumbles but have yet to register an interception.
Wendell Gregory and Darien Whitaker Jr. have each recorded 2.5 sacks. Logan Bartley leads the team in tackles, while Gabe Powers has contributed important stops in the middle.
Better execution against the run remains a priority for Klein’s defense.
Jayhawks Stats
Kansas has scored 168 points through five games, averaging 33.6 per contest. The Jayhawks have accumulated 1,304 passing yards and 1,077 rushing yards. Their offensive balance has been encouraging despite inconsistent results.
Dylan Edwards leads the ground attack with 319 yards and three TD’s. Yasin Willis is sidelined with a foot injury, reducing Kansas’ backfield depth.
The Jayhawks need their offensive line to create more dependable rushing lanes.
Nik McMillan leads the receiving corps with 345 yards and three TD’s. Cam Pickett has also emerged as an important target in the passing attack.
Defensively, Kansas has shown an ability to create disruption in opposing backfields. Leroy Harris III has been particularly effective attacking behind the line of scrimmage.
The Jayhawks need that pressure to hold up against a mobile quarterback. Missed tackles have allowed opponents to extend possessions. Kansas must finish plays rather than surrender additional yardage after contact.
Jayhawks vs. Wildcats QB Matchup
Kansas State QB Avery Johnson has thrown for 1,092 yards through five games. He has nine TD passes against three interceptions. The experienced starter has also rushed for 330 yards and three TD’s.
Johnson has started 31 consecutive games for the Wildcats. His mobility forces defenses to account for designed runs and scrambles.
Kansas State relies heavily on his ability to extend plays.
Blake Barnett has attempted five passes for 41 yards in limited backup action. He is listed as questionable with a lower-body injury.
Kansas QB Isaiah Marshall has thrown for 1,143 yards, eight TD’s and four interceptions. He has also contributed 255 rushing yards. His dual-threat ability gives the Jayhawks flexibility when protection breaks down.
Marshall has established himself as Kansas’ primary starter.

Marshall threw for 333 yards and two TD’s against Utah. He also recorded his first career rushing TD in that game.
Cole Ballard is listed as out with a shoulder injury. His absence limits the Jayhawks’ experienced quarterback depth.
Both starters are capable of extending plays outside the pocket.
Johnson has the advantage in starting experience, while Marshall has demonstrated an ability to attack downfield. Kansas State must pressure Marshall without leaving scrambling lanes open. Kansas faces a similar challenge containing Johnson’s mobility.
The Wildcats’ pass protection has been a strength this season. Kansas will need disciplined rush lanes and better tackling to keep Johnson from escaping pressure.
Kansas Jayhawks vs. Kansas State Wildcats bottom line: Kansas State has the experienced quarterback and home-field advantage, but Kansas has enough offensive ability to make the Sunflower Showdown competitive.

Jayhawks Wildcats Free Pick: Kansas Jayhawks +4.5
Here is my Jayhawks Wildcats free pick: I’m taking Kansas +4.5. Kansas State has won 17 straight in this rivalry, but Saturday’s spread isn’t asking the Jayhawks to end that streak. It’s asking them to stay within four points.
Kansas State’s recent offensive problems make laying more than a FG uncomfortable. The Wildcats have struggled to generate consistent gains on early downs, and that leaves the door open for Kansas to keep possessions competitive.
That’s where the extra point and a half matters.
Kansas has enough offensive versatility to keep Kansas State from controlling this game for four quarters.
The Jayhawks need to protect Marshall and avoid the turnovers that can turn a close rivalry into a two-score deficit. If they accomplish that, Kansas State will have to sustain drives rather than rely on favorable field position.
I don’t need Kansas to win the Sunflower Showdown.
Kansas State deserves respect at home, but its recent performances haven’t earned my confidence laying this number. The Jayhawks can lose by a FG and still deliver the ticket. My money is on the points with Kansas +4.5.
