Boise State’s latest victory was anything but routine.
The Broncos nearly squandered a 28-3 halftime lead against Texas State. Three fourth-quarter TD passes from Max Cutforth rescued a game that had turned into a serious mess.
Colorado State has surrendered at least 49 points in four of its last five contests. That’s a difficult defensive stretch to explain away.

Rams Stats
Colorado State has scored 284 points through eight games, averaging 35.5 per contest. The Rams have shown the ability to produce big offensive performances, particularly through the air.
Scoring hasn’t been their biggest problem.
Colorado State has surrendered 339 points, averaging 42.4 per game. Opponents have consistently found ways to exploit the Rams’ defensive weaknesses.
The Rams have intercepted nine passes this season. Those takeaways have provided one of the few bright spots on defense.
Mel Brown has contributed 454 rushing yards. His availability remains uncertain heading into Saturday.
Juice Vereen has also dealt with an injury concern. Colorado State needs its offensive playmakers available against a nationally ranked opponent.
The Rams have struggled to stop opposing rushing attacks.
Missed tackles and inconsistent defensive execution have contributed to their disappointing record. Jim Mora needs a considerably sharper performance from that unit.
Broncos Stats
Boise State has scored 287 points, averaging 35.9 per contest. The Broncos have combined a productive running game with efficient quarterback play.
Dylan Riley leads the rushing attack with 1,049 yards and nine TD. His consistency has been a major reason Boise State can establish offensive balance.
Riley has been especially effective when given room to attack the second level.
Sire Gaines provides additional backfield depth. His status remains uncertain after dealing with an injury.
Boise State has allowed 189 points, averaging 23.6 per contest. The defense has recorded seven interceptions and one fumble recovery.
Boise State has the stronger roster, but another defensive collapse would make this favorite sweat.
The Broncos have generally protected the football well. Their ability to sustain drives has helped them overcome occasional defensive lapses.
Coverage breakdowns remain a concern against explosive passing attacks. Colorado State has enough offensive ability to test that weakness.
Broncos vs. Rams QB Matchup
K’saan Farrar has appeared in six games for Colorado State, throwing for 931 yards and five TD. He’s completed 89 of 144 passes with two interceptions.
Farrar has provided the Rams with another option at quarterback. His experience could prove important depending on the team’s offensive plans.
Hauss Hejny has thrown for 1,138 yards and 14 TD in five appearances. He’s completed 90 of 134 attempts with two interceptions.
Hejny has been the more productive passer of the two.
Colorado State has used both quarterbacks this season. The starting assignment for Saturday has not been established conclusively.
Maddux Madsen leads Boise State with 1,681 passing yards and 15 TD. He’s completed 148 of 222 attempts with one interception.
Madsen suffered a left knee injury against Texas State. Coach Spencer Danielson described the injury as not serious but left his availability for Colorado State uncertain.
Madsen also has three rushing TD this season. Two came against Texas State before he left the game.

Max Cutforth is the next option if Madsen cannot play. Cutforth completed eight of 13 passes for 131 yards and three TD against Texas State.
The backup has previous starting experience, having opened three games last season. Boise State can turn to him without asking an inexperienced freshman to run the offense.
Boise State Broncos vs. Colorado State Rams bottom line: Boise State has the stronger overall roster and rushing attack, but the quarterback decision adds uncertainty to an otherwise favorable matchup.
Boise State Broncos vs. Colorado State Rams Football Betting Trends
- The Broncos have a strong record as favorites, winning 28 out of their last 30 games in that role.
- Also, Boise State has been successful in away games, winning all 3 games this season.
- The Broncos have a solid record after a win, with 25 wins in their last 30 games.
- Colorado State has hit the over in all 7 of their games following a loss in the past two seasons.
- Plus, the Rams have gone over the total in their last 6 home games.
- The Rams have a 9-1 record hitting the over in their last 10 games overall.
Broncos Rams Free Pick: Boise State -17.5
Here is my Broncos Rams free pick: I’m laying Boise State -17.5. That’s a substantial number on the road, but Colorado State has repeatedly shown it cannot survive four quarters against productive offenses. The Rams can score, but their defense has made opponents look awfully comfortable. For this bet to cash, Boise State needs to turn its advantages into touchdowns, not settle for field goals. A three-score spread leaves little room for wasted trips inside the 20.
Colorado State doesn’t need to be shut out for this cover; it needs to be kept from trading touchdowns all night.
My biggest concern is the Broncos easing off with a comfortable lead. The Rams have enough passing ability to steal a late touchdown, and the sportsbooks count those points too.
Quarterback availability is another legitimate risk. Even if Boise State has to make a change, I like the supporting cast to create favorable situations rather than demand heroics from whoever takes the snaps. I’m expecting Boise State to attack the Rams’ defensive weaknesses early and keep scoring pressure on them. Colorado State has spent too many Saturdays trying to recover from its own mistakes.
I’m willing to lay my hard earned bucks on the Boise State Broncos -17.5.
