2023 NBA Handicapping
With the Celtics suspending Ime Udoka for the season there has already been a shakeup at the top of the ladder in the odds to win Coach of the Year honors.
Entering the 2022-23 season there are a number of teams that are considered favorites to vie for the title and those teams’ head coaches will have the best shot of winning Coach of the Year.
That’s not to say only head coaches of championship-caliber squads can win although they have the decided edge with the award going to the bench boss of teams with home-court seeds in the last 10 seasons.
Other factors affecting who wins the hardware are teams that take a palpable jump in win percentage over the previous year without major star power being added.
The last two winners represent both sides of the equation. Monty Williams led his Suns to the best record in the league in 2022 while Tom Thibodeau won in 2021 after leading the Knicks back into the postseason via the fourth-best record in the East.
Gregg Popovich (3), Mike Budenholzer (2), and Tom Thibodeau (2) are the active head coaches who’ve won the award multiple times.
Chris Finch (+810)
The Timberwolves took a jump last season with Chris Finch implementing a more free-wheeling offense. Minnesota returned to the postseason by first defeating the Clippers in a play-in game then pushed the Grizzlies to six games before succumbing.
Karl-Anthony Towns rediscovered his form after dealing with so much personal loss the prior year. Finch tweaked the offense to allow Towns more freedom on the floor with Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell forming the Wolves’ Big 3.
This offseason ownership elected to take a big swing luring Tim Connelly away from the Nuggets to become the new President of Basketball Operations.
Connelly got to work immediately orchestrating the biggest deal of the summer sending five players and giving up four first-round draft picks and a pick swap to land three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert.
Under Finch’s tutelage, Minnesota doubled its wins and had 13 fewer losses in 2022. Granted the league played 10 fewer matches but with Gobert on board and more emphasis on playing two-way ball, it’s anticipated Finch could lead his squad to a home-court seed.
Tyronn Lue (+940)
Often cited as one of the top three coaches in the NBA, Ty Lue enters this season with the deepest roster in the association. More importantly, he’ll have the services of his superstars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George who’ve each missed significant time since signing due to injury.
Jason Kidd (+1000)
Luka Doncic arrives at training camp in the best shape of his four-year career which should bode well for the Mavericks to get out to a quicker start this season. Last season, the Mavericks had a rough start but closed the season on a 36-12 run. Although Jalen Brunson was lost to the Knicks in free agency, Dallas added Christian Wood and JaVale McGee plus get Tim Hardaway Jr. back from injury.
Many pundits favor Doncic to collect his first MVP and if he does it could lead to Kidd joining him as Coach of the Year.
Erik Spoelstra (+1125)
In the annual GM survey Spoelstra was cited as the top coach in the association based on his prowess in several key categories. Spoelstra gets his charges to compete on both ends of the floor, spearheads strong player development, and has an uncanny ability to keep the Heat competitive regardless of who suits up.
The Heat bench boss has made a steady climb and only recently overtook Gregg Popovich by pundits ranking the best coaches. Last season the Heat recorded the top Eastern Conference record and if they replicate that performance this season it’ll be hard to ignore Coach Spo for this award.
