The New York Yankees head to Tropicana Field Saturday evening for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Tampa Bay Rays. Tampa Bay finished 98-64 and earned the American League’s top seed, while New York advanced by sweeping Boston in the Wild Card Series.
First pitch is set for 6:30 PM ET on TBS, truTV, UniMás and HBO Max.
The Rays earned a first-round bye after finishing four games ahead of New York in the AL East. The Yankees arrive having already played postseason baseball, but they will do it without Aaron Judge, who was left off the ALDS roster.
The Yankees eliminated Boston and immediately lost Judge for this series. October rarely sends flowers.
Tampa Bay won seven of the 13 regular-season meetings between these division rivals.
The series flipped late, however, with New York winning four of the final five meetings. This is their second postseason matchup after Tampa Bay eliminated the Yankees in five games during the 2020 ALDS.

The opening odds make Tampa Bay a slight Game 1 favorite. The Rays opened -133 on the moneyline, with New York returning +114.
The Yankees are +1.5 at -201, while the opening total is seven.
New York made quick work of Boston in the Wild Card Series.
The Yankees opened with a 9-0 victory behind two Ben Rice home runs and six RBI, then completed the sweep in Game 2. New York scored 14 runs across the two games.
Tampa Bay finished the regular season 5-5 over its final 10 games.
The Rays lost their finale 7-3 to Philadelphia but finished 55-26 at Tropicana Field. They outscored opponents 736-650 during the regular season.

Rays Stats
Tampa Bay’s 98-win season was built on a lineup that consistently put runners on base rather than relying entirely on power.
Junior Caminero supplied plenty of the latter.
The 23-year-old played all 162 games and finished with 42 home runs and 101 RBI. Yandy Díaz hit .293 with 22 homers, while Chandler Simpson batted .306 and stole 46 bases.
That combination gave Tampa Bay several different ways to create offense.
The Rays could beat teams with Caminero’s power, Díaz’s ability to reach base or Simpson creating havoc once he got aboard. Jonathan Aranda added another productive bat to a lineup that rarely needed one formula to score.
Tampa Bay also received another strong season from its pitching staff.
The Rays allowed 650 runs and were particularly difficult to beat at home. Winning 55 times in 81 games at Tropicana Field is a fairly effective way to avoid the Wild Card round.
Yankees Stats
New York finished the regular season 94-68 after chasing Tampa Bay throughout the AL East race.
The Yankees scored 739 runs and entered October with plenty of power even before their lineup was forced to adjust without Judge.
Ben Rice supplied 41 home runs and 97 RBI. Luis García Jr. hit .277 with 30 homers and 92 RBI overall, while Cody Bellinger remained another significant left-handed threat.
The Wild Card round showed the lineup still has some teeth.
Rice went 5-for-9 with two homers and six RBI against Boston, while García went 3-for-6 with a home run. The Yankees scored enough to sweep the series without needing a deciding third game.
Now the lineup has to prove it can keep producing without its biggest bat.
Judge’s absence changes how pitchers can navigate the order and removes the hitter every opponent normally spends the most time trying not to face. Nobody in New York needed another October subplot, but here we are.
Yankees vs. Rays Pitching Matchup
Gerrit Cole gets the Game 1 assignment for New York.
The veteran right-hander finished 10-9 with a 3.61 ERA and 131 strikeouts across 22 starts after returning from Tommy John surgery in May. He also owns a 2.93 ERA in 12 postseason starts with the Yankees.
Cole saw Tampa Bay three times during the regular season.
He went 1-1 with a 2.50 ERA in those outings and allowed three runs or fewer each time. His history against the Rays gives New York a pretty comfortable answer for Game 1.

Here is my Yankees Rays free pick: I’m betting Over 7.5. Losing Aaron Judge obviously removes the biggest weapon from New York’s lineup, but it doesn’t turn the Yankees into nine guys hoping somebody packed a bat.
They still have enough power around Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and Luis García Jr. to contribute to this number.
Tampa Bay brings a different problem. The Rays can create traffic, run and force a defense to make plays, which gives them ways to score without needing three balls to land in the seats.
Eight runs is the assignment. Nobody said Cole and Rasmussen have to personally deliver all of them.
That’s the betting angle for me.
I can get quality work from both starters and still have this Over alive when they leave. Get four or five runs on the board through six innings and one messy October frame changes the entire ticket.
We don’t need 6-5 and fireworks from the first pitch. Something like 5-3 works just fine, and both lineups have enough different ways to get us there.
