Padres vs. Brewers Gameday
The San Diego Padres head to American Family Field Saturday night for Game 1 of the NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers. San Diego finished 91-71, while Milwaukee posted a franchise-record 103-59 mark and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the postseason.
First pitch is set for 7:30 PM CT and 8:30 PM ET on FS1.
The Padres arrive after sweeping the Cubs in two games during the Wild Card Series. Milwaukee hasn’t played since Sunday after earning a first-round bye.
Milwaukee won 103 games and earned some rest. San Diego apparently preferred to stay busy.
These teams saw plenty of each other during the regular season.
San Diego won four of six meetings, including a three-game sweep at Petco Park in August. Milwaukee took two of three when the teams met at American Family Field in May.
This will be the first postseason series between the Padres and Brewers.

San Diego Padres vs. Milwaukee Brewers Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make Milwaukee a substantial Game 1 favorite. The Brewers opened -203 on the moneyline, with San Diego returning +172. The Padres are +1.5 at -125, while Milwaukee is -1.5 at +105. The opening total is seven.
San Diego handled its Wild Card business quickly.
The Padres beat Chicago 8-0 in Game 1 and completed the sweep with a 4-1 victory Wednesday. They allowed one run across the two games.
Milwaukee finished the regular season on a five-game winning streak and went 8-2 over its final 10.
The Brewers were also outstanding at American Family Field, finishing 55-26 at home. They scored 832 runs during the regular season while allowing 618, good for a +214 run differential.

Brewers Stats
Milwaukee didn’t win 103 games by trying to launch everything into the cheap seats.
The Brewers hit .258 with a .341 on-base percentage, leading the majors in both categories. They finished second in runs scored despite hitting only 154 home runs.
Milwaukee also stole 162 bases and consistently created pressure without relying on one offensive formula.
Brice Turang was one of the lineup’s most important pieces, driving in 100 runs while helping set the tone for Milwaukee’s relentless approach. William Contreras remained a difficult out behind him, while Jake Bauers supplied additional power.
The pitching staff did its share too.
Milwaukee finished with a 3.51 ERA, second-best in the majors. The Brewers’ ability to prevent runs while creating traffic at the plate explains quite a bit about how 103 wins happened without a lineup built around home-run totals.
The bullpen gives Pat Murphy multiple late-game options.
Trevor Megill again handled the ninth inning, while Abner Uribe gives Milwaukee another high-leverage arm when the game gets uncomfortable. October tends to produce plenty of uncomfortable.
Padres Stats
San Diego reached October at 91-71 after closing the regular season 8-2 over its final 10 games.
The Padres scored 722 runs while allowing 681, finishing with a +41 run differential.
Manny Machado led the club with 30 home runs and 91 RBI. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit .289 with 25 homers and 38 stolen bases, while Jackson Merrill added 26 homers and 87 RBI.
Ty France provided another productive bat, hitting .295 with 21 home runs. San Diego’s offense carried that production into October.
Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts each hit .429 or better during the two-game Wild Card Series, giving the Padres some immediate postseason production from the middle of the order.
The bullpen gives manager Craig Stammen some flexibility if Game 1 gets interesting early.
That matters in a series where every run figures to become considerably more expensive once the starters leave. Nobody hands out style points in October anyway.
Padres vs. Brewers Pitching Matchup
Robbie Ray gets the Game 1 assignment for San Diego.
The veteran left-hander finished 13-8 with a 3.59 ERA and 140 strikeouts. He has also handled Milwaukee well during his career, carrying a 2.82 ERA against the Brewers.
Ray’s handedness matters in this matchup.
Milwaukee was considerably more productive against right-handed pitching than lefties during the regular season, giving San Diego a matchup reason to hand Ray the baseball.

Jacob Misiorowski gets the ball for Milwaukee after a remarkable regular season.
The 24-year-old finished 16-5 with a 1.80 ERA and 252 strikeouts. He also led the majors with a 0.80 WHIP and held opposing hitters to a .157 batting average.
That wasn’t some cute little breakout year.
Misiorowski spent the season making major-league hitters look like somebody had quietly moved the mound closer, and he finished with 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his final tune-up.
He also faced San Diego once during the regular season and threw seven scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts.
San Diego Padres vs. Milwaukee Brewers bottom line: Ray gives San Diego a useful left-handed look, but Misiorowski brings one of baseball’s most dominant regular-season pitching lines into his first postseason start.

Padres Brewers Free Pick: Padres ML +172
Here is my Padres Brewers free pick: I’m taking Padres ML +172. Milwaukee absolutely deserves to be favored, but +172 is a serious price in a baseball game between two playoff teams.
I don’t need to prove San Diego is better.
I need to believe the Friars can win this game to make +172 worth taking, and I believe they do. Milwaukee’s 103 wins are already baked into this number, along with home field and a major advantage on the mound.
Milwaukee can keep the 103 wins. At +172, I’ll happily take one from San Diego.
I’m not interested in paying the premium with the favorite. Baseball gives an underdog plenty of ways to steal one game, and San Diego has enough late-inning weaponry to keep this alive if it reaches the bullpen within striking distance.
The Padres don’t need to dominate anything Saturday night. Hang around, manufacture one crooked inning and make Milwaukee protect a lead under postseason pressure.
At better than +170, that’s enough of a path for me.
Give me Padres ML +172.
