The table is set for the Toledo Rockets. With NIU’s loss to Ohio on Tuesday, the Rockets just need a win over WMU to grab a spot in the MAC title game.
Toledo lost the head-to-head matchup with NIU at the Glass Bowl, but have been given a 2nd chance at the West title.
Western Michigan is just 6-5 and while they are bowl eligible, they would like to upset the #24 team in the nation to assure themselves a spot in a postseason game.
The Broncos had their chances this season. With just 2 losses in the MAC, WMU is going to finished tied 2nd in the West.
However, those two losses have come at the worst time, the last two weeks, as the Rockets fell to BG 41-27 and fell last week to NIU 27-19. With that loss to NIU, they have been eliminated from the MAC West tiebreaker.
Western Michigan is not one Toledo can look over by any means. The Broncos have the 21st best offense in the nation as they average 486.5 yards per game. With their mass amounts of yardage per game, the Broncos are scoring 35.3 points per game thus far.
QB Zach Terrell has been one of the most consistent QBs in the conference this season as he’s thrown for 2982 yards to go along with 25 touchdowns.
Terrell does have the benefit of a solid run game that is averaging 201.6 yards per game. RB Jamauri Bogan has rumbled his way for 835 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The Toledo faithful have to be the biggest fans of the Ohio Bobcats. Now, the #24 Toledo Rockets have an opportunity to not only play for the MAC Championship, but also could crash the New Years 6.
The Rockets looked extremely impressive last week against the MAC East Champions, the Bowling Green Falcons, which could prove for a fun rematch should Toledo win.
RB Kareem Hunt had another stellar game as he finished with 153 yards on 29 carries and added a couple TDs to his credit. Hunt had plenty of gaps all night long and was able to keep the Rockets in possession consistently.
As for QB Phillip Ely, he threw for 208 yards to go along with a touchdown and interception.
Ely has thrown for 2400 yards this season and will be asked to make some big passes against a decent Western Michigan secondary.
