Marshall has a lot of hope and expectations heading into the season here. Can they finally get over the hump and grab a conference title?
Marshall Thundering Herd Predictions: Team Strengths
Chasing Another Strong Season
Marshall may have a lot of questions offensively after losing a lot, but one thing is for sure and it’s at the QB position.
QB Chase Litton looks to build off what was a very impressive freshman season that saw him do some very impressive things.
Litton threw for 2605 yards to go along with 23 touchdowns. The biggest thing for him was that he threw just 8 interceptions. For a freshman, he made very minimal mistakes.
With a full season under his belt and a little more maturity, Litton could be in for an even bigger season.
Marshall Thundering Herd Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Replacing More Than You Have
Litton’s success was helped a lot by the troops he had around him.
Davonte Allen and Deandre Reaves, who were his top 2 targets last season, are now gone.
In the backfield, Devon Johnson and Remi Watson have both moved on as well.
While Marshall doesn’t have much at the RB position to work with in terms of explosive playmaking ability, they’ll use a lot of different backs early to try to find one that fits within the system.
That’s a common theme for this team. Not only is the offense seeing a lot of new faces, the defense may be seeing even more.
The team’s top two corners from last season in Keith Baxter and Corey Tindal are both gone which leaves them thin in a position that they have been so good at in the recent years.
They’ll also have the task of replacing Evan McKelvey, who was Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year last season.
There is a lot of players who will be in new starting roles and bigger roles than they had last season.
If they don’t step up this Marshall team could be in trouble and force the offense to really have to score.
Marshall Thundering Herd 2016 Prediction: 10-2
Marshall gets a couple tough non conference games to work with in Louisville and Pittsburgh that will provide some fun, tough tests for them early on in the season.
Marshall catches a break as they finally don’t have to deal with the Hilltoppers Brandon Doughty anymore.
It could come down to them against the Hilltoppers for the East title, which this season would have the edge in favor of the Thundering Herd.
A 10-2 season and a spot in the conference title game is a very realistic outcome.
