Next Monday sees all the college football marbles up for grabs in the desert, as unbeaten Clemson still enters as the underdog against legendary Nick Saban and his juggernaut Alabama squad. Alabama made it look awfully easy in a 38-0 drubbing of Michigan State in the CFB semi-final, embarrassing the Big Ten in the process.
Don’t discount the Tigers, however, as they also dispatched a strong Oklahoma team without trouble.

When ’Bama QB Jake Coker can hit accurately on deep throws, the Tide are incredibly hard to beat. Heisman-winning RB Derrick Henry is supplemented by the electric speed of freshman WR Calvin Ridley.
It’s a formula that made the Spartans look silly, and if the Tigers aren’t ready for it, there could history repeating itself – in more ways than one when you consider how many National Titles the Crimson Tide have won recently.
Clemson
Amidst all the doubters, Clemson has just been flawless this season. The Tigers may not have quite the daunting schedule an SEC West division team has (Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema is happy to tell you about that, if you’ve been following the news) but it’s been impressive nonetheless.
The Tigers sunk championship-contender Florida State earlier in the year, which should give them all the street credit they need.
Believably, the Tigers are among the best in the nation in scoring offense (38.5 points per game) and scoring defense (yielding just 20.2 on average).
The scoring magic is provided by QB Deshaun Watson (3,512 yards, 31 pass TD, 1,032 rush yards, 12 TDs on the ground) and RB Wayne Gallman (1,332 yards, 10 majors).
Gallman may have trouble finding room to run with a prodigiously athletic Alabama front seven, so the onus will be on Clemson’s offensive line to have a big game.

Alabama
In an almost unfair fashion, Alabama seems to simply be getting better and better. The Crimson Tide coaching staff, spearheaded by the stoic Saban, always has the Tide geared with a sound game-plan and their execution is second to none.
When you have 300+-lb defensive lineman that have six-pack abdominals (future NFL star A’Shawn Robinson comes to mind) you’re going to be a scary defense to square off against. Linebacker Reggie Ragland also carries the mail and Cyrus Jones makes rangy plays in the defensive secondary.
Alabama is always known for its formidable defense, but the Tide are a complete program that can both stymie the opponent and score at will. They proved that against an MSU team that looked like it should have been in an inferior league.
When ’Bama have the ball, 2,000+ yard rusher Henry is always the featured contributor. Sure, there’s Ridley and ArDarius Stewart catching passes from Coker, but Henry is the straw that stirs the drink.
In a development that was nearly unthinkable in the first half of the season, Henry was the superior SEC running back to LSU’s Leonard Fournette. It resulted in the 242-lb junior’s Heisman Trophy and certain status in the NFL moving forward.
Basically, Clemson’s run defense better have its pencils sharpened for the game in Glendale. There’s going to be a physical front that almost always dictates the tone.

With an earlier slip-up to Ole Miss, neutrals (and Auburn fans) hoped ’Bama’s reign of dominance was coming to a close. It doesn’t appear so.

Clemson has passed every test thus far, but it hasn’t had a test as daunting as Alabama yet, even in the victory over FSU. The Tigers must play nearly perfect on both sides of the ball to be successful against what has become an Evil Empire run by an evil genius in Tuscaloosa.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Over
If Alabama dictates time of possession and keeps its defense fresh like it did against the Spartans, the Tide should win the National Championship by more than a touchdown.
