08-14-23 | A's v. Cardinals -199 | Top | 5-7 | Win | 100 | 11 h 6 m | Show |
Miles Mikolas (6-8, 4.20 ERA) will continue his quest for a strong finish to the season when he draws the start Monday as the Cardinals host the Oakland Athletics to open a three-game series. Oakland will start left-hander JP Sears (2-9, 4.23) in the series opener. This will be his first career start against the Cardinals. Sears took a 6-1 loss to the Texas Rangers in his previous start after allowing four runs on nine hits in four innings. Before that start, he had surrendered two runs or fewer in four of his previous six outings. |
|||||||
08-13-23 | Braves v. Mets +118 | Top | 6-7 | Win | 118 | 19 h 30 m | Show |
Yonny Chirinos allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks in 5.0 innings as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-6 on Tuesday. Chirinos struck out five, ending the game with a 4.83 ERA and 1.32 WHIP on the season. |
|||||||
08-12-23 | Guardians v. Rays -146 | Top | 5-6 | Win | 100 | 6 h 41 m | Show |
Rookie right-hander Gavin Williams (1-3, 2.90 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday for the Guardians. The 24-year-old aims to follow up a dominating effort. Williams struck out a season-best 12 and gave up one hit and one walk in seven innings against the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. He received a no-decision. It marks the second time in nine big league starts that Williams gave up just one hit over seven shutout innings. The other was against the Kansas City Royals on June 27. He also received a no-decision in that outing. Right-hander Shawn Armstrong (0-0, 1.15) will serve as the Rays' opener for the fourth time this season. Tampa Bay was hoping to start right-hander Tyler Glasnow (back) but decided to push him back to Monday. Armstrong has allowed just 20 hits in 31 1/3 innings this season. He has struck out 34 and walked six. Armstrong, 32, is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in six career relief outings against Cleveland, a franchise he pitched for from 2015-17. |
|||||||
08-11-23 | Twins +170 v. Phillies | Top | 2-13 | Loss | -100 | 9 h 8 m | Show |
The Phillies will hand the ball to Cristopher Sanchez (0-3, 3.44 ERA). In Sanchez's last start, he gave up six hits and six runs in five innings against the Kansas City Royals. Sanchez has never faced the Twins. The struggling Twins will look to snap a three-game losing streak. After winning the opener of a four-game series against the Detroit Tigers, the Twins fell flat and dropped the final three, including a 3-0 loss on Thursday. Dallas Keuchel is scheduled to start for Minnesota. It will be Keuchel's second start since being signed to a minor league deal by the Twins. In his Twins debut last Sunday, he held the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to one run in five innings. |
|||||||
08-10-23 | Blue Jays v. Guardians +118 | Top | 3-4 | Win | 118 | 9 h 20 m | Show |
Toronto will turn to Alek Manoah (3-8, 5.72 ERA) in the finale against Cleveland's Noah Syndergaard (1-5, 6.75) in a battle of struggling right-handers. Manoah, 25, posted his first win in nearly one month on Friday despite allowing three runs on six hits -- including two homers -- in 6 2/3 innings of a 7-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. Syndergaard, 30, endured a horrific night during his initial outing at Progressive Field. He yielded a career-high four homers and five runs total in six innings during a 7-4 setback to the Chicago White Sox on Saturday. Syndergaard is 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in three career meetings (two starts) against Toronto. |
|||||||
08-10-23 | Astros -115 v. Orioles | Top | 4-5 | Loss | -115 | 9 h 40 m | Show |
Right-hander Dean Kremer (10-4, 4.61 ERA) will take the mound for the Orioles in the finale. He's looking for his first win since July 14. Kremer, 27, has received a no-decision in each of his past four starts. He allowed two runs and two hits in 5 1/3 against the New York Mets on Friday in his last outing. Kremer tossed his only career shutout against the Astros when he allowed four hits on Sept. 23, 2022. Overall, he is 2-0 with a 0.54 ERA in two career outings versus Houston, both coming last season. Right-hander Hunter Brown (8-7, 4.07) will be on the mound for Houston and aiming for a third straight victorious start. Brown gave up two runs and struck out four in six innings while beating both the Rays (July 29) and New York Yankees (last Friday) in his last two turns. He gave up four hits to the Rays and five versus the Yankees. Brown, 24, has never started against the Orioles. He pitched one scoreless inning of relief in Baltimore last Sept. 24, giving up three hits and striking out one. |
|||||||
08-09-23 | Nationals v. Phillies -182 | Top | 0-7 | Win | 100 | 7 h 51 m | Show |
The Phillies will hand the ball to right-hander Michael Lorenzen (6-7, 3.48 ERA) on Wednesday. Lorenzen, a former All-Star, was acquired by the Phillies before the trade deadline. In his debut with his new team, Lorenzen allowed two runs on six hits in eight innings in a 4-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Thursday. Left-hander MacKenzie Gore (6-8, 4.34) is expected to start for the Nationals. In Gore's last start, he gave up two runs on three hits in six innings in a no-decision against the Milwaukee Brewers last Wednesday. |
|||||||
08-05-23 | Astros v. Yankees +126 | Top | 1-3 | Win | 126 | 1 h 20 m | Show |
A week ago, Justin Verlander was preparing for his first attempt at earning his 250th career win while still a member of the underachieving New York Mets. Verlander posted a 6-5 record and a 3.16 ERA for the Mets in the first year of a two-year, $86.7 million contract he signed in December after helping the Astros capture their second World Series title in team history. He joined a team that was coming off a 101-win season and was considered among the majors' preseason favorites. Verlander will be opposed by left-hander Nestor Cortes (5-2, 5.16 ERA), who is returning from a left rotator cuff strain for his first start since allowing two runs in five innings on May 30 in Seattle. Cortes initially hoped to miss just a few starts but wound up being transferred to the 60-day injured list. He allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings over two rehab starts for Double-A Somerset. "I've been on the shelf too long," Cortes said on Wednesday. "I want to come back and obviously show who I am and be back to the same form I was. So excited for this weekend." Cortes is 1-1 with an 8.04 ERA in six regular-season appearances (three starts) against Houston. He also faced them in Game 4 of last year's American League Championship Series but exited after two-plus innings with a groin injury. |
|||||||
08-04-23 | Astros v. Yankees +133 | Top | 7-3 | Loss | -100 | 5 h 54 m | Show |
After facing Shane McClanahan and Cristian Javier the previous two days, the Yankees will oppose Hunter Brown (7-7, 4.12 ERA), who leads AL rookies in innings (111 1/3) and strikeouts (126). Brown went 1-3 with a 5.92 ERA in five July outings and got the win on Saturday when he allowed two runs on four hits in six innings against Tampa Bay. Brown will be making his first career start against the Yankees. His only appearance against them was in a relief role when he walked two and got two outs in the eighth inning of Game 3 of the ALCS on Oct. 22. Luis Severino (2-5, 7.49 ERA) will attempt to rebound from another rough outing for the Yankees. Severino last pitched Sunday in Baltimore, where he allowed seven of his nine runs in the opening inning and tied a season high by yielding 10 hits. He was out after 3 1/3 innings. Severino had allowed four runs in 11 2/3 innings over his two previous starts, but Sunday marked the fourth time he allowed at least seven runs in his 12 starts this season. Severino is 2-3 with a 3.82 ERA in seven regular-season appearances (six starts) against the Astros. He last faced them in Game 2 of the ALCS at Houston on Oct. 20, when he allowed three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings and took the loss. |
|||||||
08-02-23 | Angels +158 v. Braves | Top | 5-12 | Loss | -100 | 1 h 34 m | Show |
The pitching matchup for the series finale features a pair of right-handers, Atlanta's Yonny Chirinos (4-4, 4.34 ERA) vs. Los Angeles' Lucas Giolito (6-7, 3.85). Giolito will be making his 23rd start of the season and second for the Angels since being acquired from the Chicago White Sox on July 26. He took the loss in his club debut on Friday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk with five strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays. |
|||||||
07-28-23 | Yankees -119 v. Orioles | Top | 0-1 | Loss | -119 | 9 h 51 m | Show |
Orioles rookie right-hander Grayson Rodriguez (2-2, 6.91 ERA) will make his 13th career start and first appearance against the Yankees. In two starts since returning to the majors following nearly two months with Triple-A Norfolk, Rodriguez has allowed six runs in 10 2/3 innings in a pair of no-decisions, but the game at Tampa Bay was encouraging on several fronts. |
|||||||
07-27-23 | Cubs v. Cardinals -109 | Top | 10-3 | Loss | -109 | 8 h 24 m | Show |
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele has enjoyed more success against the St. Louis Cardinals than against any other opponent this season. He will get another crack at them Thursday when the Cubs face the Cardinals to open a four-game series in St. Louis. Steele (10-3, 2.95 ERA) is 3-0 with a 2.95 ERA in three starts against the Cardinals in 2023. In his latest outing, the left-hander allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings as the Cubs beat St. Louis 4-3 on Friday. St. Louis will counter Steele with Miles Mikolas (6-5, 4.33 ERA), who will try to rebound from one of his worst starts of the season. The right-hander allowed the Cubs five runs on 11 hits and a walk in five innings during a no-decision on Saturday. |
|||||||
07-26-23 | Marlins v. Rays -164 | Top | 7-1 | Loss | -164 | 2 h 24 m | Show |
Tampa Bay is going with Zach Eflin (11-5, 3.36 ERA), its most reliable starter. At home, especially, the right-hander has impressed, with a 10-1 record and 2.10 ERA. The Marlins counter with Sandy Alcantara (3-9, 4.70). The 2022 National League Cy Young Award winner, Alcantara has provided innings, logging 126 1/3 in 20 starts, but has lacked consistency. On the road, the 27-year-old is 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA in 11 starts. A telling statistic from a year ago: He had a 2.63 ERA in day game starts. This season, the 6-foot-5 right-hander is 0-5 with a 4.98 ERA in matinees. Eflin has quite a bit of history facing the Marlins, dating to when he pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies. In 16 games (15 starts) against Miami, he is 5-7 with a 4.97 ERA in 88 2/3 innings. Eflin pitched a gem in his last start, tossing seven shutout innings and scattering two hits and a walk while striking out eight in a 3-0 win over the visiting Baltimore Orioles. |
|||||||
07-25-23 | Rockies v. Nationals -130 | Top | 5-6 | Win | 100 | 10 h 38 m | Show |
Rockies left-hander Austin Gomber (8-8, 6.18 ERA) will look to eat some innings when he makes his 21st start of the season on Tuesday. He took the loss in an April 8 matchup with Washington, dropping his career record against the Nationals to 2-2 with a 7.23 ERA in four starts. Gomber won four consecutive starts before suffering a loss against the Houston Astros last Wednesday. On Tuesday, Gomber will be trying to reach the nine-win mark for just the second time in his five seasons in the majors. Right-hander Trevor Williams (5-5, 4.38) is set to oppose Gomber. He was the winning pitcher in the April 8 meeting in Denver, giving up two runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings for his first win of the season. Williams is 3-2 with a 4.97 ERA in five career starts against the Rockies. In his most recent outing, Williams allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings against the Chicago Cubs last Wednesday. He settled for a no-decision and hasn't picked up a win since July 2, when he beat the Phillies. |
|||||||
07-25-23 | Marlins v. Rays -190 | Top | 1-4 | Win | 100 | 8 h 56 m | Show |
In the opener on Tuesday, Miami will go with Edward Cabrera (5-5, 4.50 ERA), while Tampa Bay counters with Tyler Glasnow (3-3, 3.62). Cabrera has faced Tampa Bay just once in his career, allowing three earned runs in three innings (9.00 ERA) of a loss in 2021. Glasnow has an 0-1 mark and 5.28 ERA in three starts against Miami. Both pitchers possess powerful stuff, and putting the ball in play will be a challenge for both offenses. Cabrera has struck out 90 in 72 innings for 11.25 strikeouts per nine innings. Glasnow has been even more overpowering, boasting a 13.17 K/9 after fanning 80 in 54 2/3 innings. The Rays are just 4-14 in July, and the Marlins present a formidable team with their hard-throwing staff. |
|||||||
07-24-23 | Cardinals v. Diamondbacks -105 | Top | 10-6 | Loss | -105 | 16 h 58 m | Show |
Adam Wainwright has looked like a pitcher approaching the end of the line. The 41-year-old Cardinals legend gets the chance to show that there's still life in his right arm when St. Louis visits the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night at Phoenix. Wainwright (3-4, 7.66 ERA) will come off the injured list to make the start against Arizona in the opener of a three-game series. He has been sidelined due to shoulder irritation and will be making his first appearance since July 4. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that Wainwright will throw approximately 65 pitches. Right-hander Ryne Nelson (6-5, 4.82) will be on the mound for Arizona. Nelson, 25, has allowed two or fewer earned runs in three of his past four starts. That includes giving up two runs and three hits in seven innings while defeating the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday. Nelson had one rough outing during the stretch, giving up seven runs and nine hits over three innings of a loss to the visiting New York Mets on July 6. |
|||||||
07-23-23 | Blue Jays v. Mariners -131 | Top | 4-3 | Loss | -131 | 7 h 32 m | Show |
Alek Manoah fell to 2-8, allowing four runs on three hits and five walks in 3.0 innings, as the Toronto Blue Jays lost to the San Diego Padres 9-1 on Tuesday. Manoah did not strike out a batter, ending the game with a 6.18 ERA and 1.84 WHIP on the season. |
|||||||
07-23-23 | Royals +180 v. Yankees | Top | 5-8 | Loss | -100 | 4 h 10 m | Show |
New York's Luis Severino (1-4, 6.66 ERA) will pitch at home for the first time since enduring one of the worst starts of his career. On July 5, in his final start before the All-Star break, Severino was shelled for seven runs and 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Baltimore Orioles, marking the fourth time this season he allowed at least five runs. The Yankees want to see the version of Severino from his last start, when he allowed one run and six hits in six innings during a no-decision Monday against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim, Calif. Severino is 2-1 with a 4.63 ERA in four career starts against the Royals covering 23 1/3 innings. He last faced them May 1, 2022, in Kansas City, when he surrendered four runs (three earned) and seven hits in five innings in a no-decision. The Royals are going with Jordan Lyles (1-11, 6.05), who has shown better results since losing his first 11 decisions. The losses came in his first 14 starts, when he posted a 6.89 ERA. Since then, he is 1-0 with a 3.13 ERA in four outings, and he has allowed just two homers in that span after giving up 18 during his winless skid. Lyles is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in eight career appearances (seven starts) against the Yankees. Last year, while pitching for the Baltimore Orioles, he was 2-2 with a 4.04 ERA in six starts. |
|||||||
07-21-23 | Padres -136 v. Tigers | Top | 5-4 | Win | 100 | 9 h 39 m | Show |
Reese Olson (1-3, 3.96 ERA) will start for Detroit on Friday. The rookie right-hander will be making his 10th appearance and seventh start of the season. Olson pitched well in his latest outing but didn't get any run support in a 2-0 loss at Seattle on Sunday. He lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs and six hits while recording five strikeouts. Seattle scored a run in the first and another in the fourth on a solo homer. Olson will be opposed by right-hander Seth Lugo (3-4, 3.78 ERA). After being a reliever for the majority of his first seven major league seasons with the New York Mets, Lugo has appeared exclusively as a starter for the Padres this year. He is set to make his 14th start of the season. He has also been stingy with base on balls, allowing just 13 in 69 innings compared with 64 strikeouts. He got roughed up on Sunday, surrendering five runs and seven hits, including two homers, in 5 1/3 innings at Philadelphia. |
|||||||
07-16-23 | Astros -124 v. Angels | Top | 9-8 | Win | 100 | 9 h 36 m | Show |
The Astros plan to start right-hander Cristian Javier on the mound in the series finale. They're hoping the sight of Los Angeles hitters in the batters box will help turn things around for Javier, who has recorded five straight no-decisions after winning five starts in a row. Javier (7-1, 4.34) is 5-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 10 career appearances (six starts) against the Angels. His five-game winning streak earlier this season began and ended versus Los Angeles. Javier allowed one run and six hits in six innings of a 9-6 win over the Angels on June 3. He also beat Los Angeles on May 10, permitting two runs and three hits in six innings while striking out a season-high 11 batters in the 5-4 win. Javier has struggled in his past three starts, however, posting a 15.19 ERA. Houston, however, won all three games. |
|||||||
07-16-23 | Giants -138 v. Pirates | Top | 8-4 | Win | 100 | 2 h 41 m | Show |
San Francisco did not name a starter for the series finale until after Saturday's game -- left-hander Alex Wood (4-3, 4.68 ERA) -- while Pittsburgh is scheduled to go with right-hander Osvaldo Bido (1-1, 4.44). Wood is 6-4 with a 3.72 ERA in 15 career games against the Pirates, 14 of them starts. Bido, who has never faced San Francisco, is coming off his first career win. That was July 9 when he pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings over the fourth and fifth innings in relief at Arizona as the Pirates went with a bullpen game on the eve of the All-Star break. The rookie had made five starts before that lone relief appearance since being recalled and worked Sunday on three days' rest. |
|||||||
07-14-23 | Dodgers v. Mets +115 | Top | 6-0 | Loss | -100 | 15 h 22 m | Show |
Left-hander Julio Urias (6-5, 4.76 ERA) is slated to start for the Dodgers against right-hander Justin Verlander (3-4, 3.60) in a battle of former 20-game winners. The Dodgers closed out the first half by beating the visiting Los Angeles Angels to complete a two-game series sweep and run their winning streak to four. The Mets suffered their second straight loss Sunday to the host San Diego Padres. At 51-38, the Dodgers -- who won a franchise-record 111 games last season -- are on pace to record fewer than 100 victories in a 162-game schedule for the first time since 2017. Los Angeles went 92-71 before falling to the Houston Astros in a seven-game World Series. |
|||||||
07-14-23 | Brewers -116 v. Reds | Top | 1-0 | Win | 100 | 15 h 14 m | Show |
Milwaukee ace and All-Star pitcher Corbin Burnes (7-5, 3.94 ERA) will start the series opener Friday against Cincinnati. Burnes has a pair of quality starts against Cincinnati in his previous two outings, including on July 7 when he held the Reds to three runs on two hits over six innings in a 7-3 Milwaukee win. Burnes is 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA in 16 career appearances against Cincinnati, including six starts. The Reds counter with another right-hander in Graham Ashcraft (4-6, 6.28), making his team-leading 17th start of 2023. In his last start on July 5 in Washington, Ashcraft snapped a personal three-game skid and won for the first time since May 28, scattering seven hits and one run over six innings in Cincinnati's 9-2 win. Ashcraft is winless in four career starts against Milwaukee, going 0-3 with 10.13 ERA. He was tagged for a career-worst 10 runs -- all earned -- on nine hits over four innings in a 10-8 Milwaukee win on June 3 in Cincinnati. |
|||||||
07-09-23 | Phillies +110 v. Marlins | Top | 3-7 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 15 m | Show |
Sunday's pitching matchup will feature Marlins lefty Jesus Luzardo (7-5, 3.32 ERA) against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola (8-5, 4.30). Luzardo, who leads the Marlins in wins and tops Miami's starters in ERA, has faced the Phillies four times. He is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA against them. Nola is 5-9 with a 3.32 ERA in 21 starts against the Marlins. This season, he had an ERA of 3.58 for April, 4.93 for May and 4.06 for June, but he is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in July. If Nola does not throw a complete game on Sunday, the Phillies can turn to a solid bullpen that had a 26-inning scoreless-innings streak that ended on Saturday. |
|||||||
07-09-23 | Blue Jays -126 v. Tigers | Top | 4-3 | Win | 100 | 2 h 2 m | Show |
Skubal (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his second start of the season for Detroit on Sunday. Skubal, who underwent flexor tendon surgery last summer, tossed four no-hit innings against Oakland on Tuesday. Chris Bassitt (8-5, 4.09 ERA), who will start the series finale for Toronto, survived a rough patch to post back-to-back solid outings. Bassitt gave up 15 earned runs in 11 2/3 innings during a stretch of three starts last month. In his final June start, he tossed six shutout outings against San Francisco while racking up 12 strikeouts. In his outing on Tuesday, Bassitt gave up three runs and six hits in six innings against the Chicago White Sox. Lost in the euphoria of the no-hitter was the triumphant return of Tigers outfielder Riley Greene. After recovering from a leg injury, Greene was activated off the injured list on Saturday and reached base four times. He was 2-for-2 and walked twice |
|||||||
07-07-23 | Braves v. Rays -110 | Top | 2-1 | Loss | -110 | 15 h 56 m | Show |
On Friday, the Braves are sending veteran Charlie Morton (8-6, 3.57 ERA) to the mound, while the Rays counter with fellow righty Tyler Glasnow (2-2, 4.50). Morton, 39, pitched for the Rays in 2019-20, and was a prominent performer on Tampa Bay's 2020 team that lost in the World Series to the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games. The right-hander has made six career starts against the Rays and holds a 2-3 record with a 3.44 ERA in those meetings. In his last two starts, Glasnow has combined to strike out 23 in 10 2/3 innings. However, he has nothing to show for it on his record, taking a loss at Seattle on Saturday and a no-decision at home against the Kansas City Royals on June 25. |
|||||||
07-06-23 | Cubs +100 v. Brewers | Top | 5-6 | Loss | -100 | 3 h 10 m | Show |
Marcus Stroman has not pitched like an All-Star of late for the Chicago Cubs. However, since the start of last season, he's been stellar against the Milwaukee Brewers. Looking to avoid a third straight losing start, Stroman can help the visiting Cubs record their third consecutive victory and claim this four-game set from the Brewers on Thursday. From May 19-June 20, Stroman (9-6, 2.76 ERA) allowed seven earned runs and 27 hits over 48 2/3 innings to win seven straight starts. Since then, though, the right-hander has yielded eight earned runs and 13 hits over nine innings in losing two in a row. He gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings of Saturday's 6-0 loss to Cleveland. Scheduled Milwaukee starter Freddy Peralta (5-7, 4.67) is 0-4 with a 5.45 ERA in seven starts since winning at Tampa Bay on May 21. The right-hander was serviceable on Friday at Pittsburgh, allowing three runs, three hits and two walks while striking out eight in 5 1/3 innings as the Brewers blew a late lead in the 8-7 defeat. |
|||||||
07-06-23 | A's +156 v. Tigers | Top | 0-9 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 23 m | Show |
Rookie left-hander Hogan Harris (2-2, 5.17 ERA) will start the series finale for the A's. He went 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in his past three starts after posting back-to-back victories. Harris gave up five runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings against the New York Yankees on June 29. He yielded just two runs in the first five innings, but New York erupted for eight runs in the sixth. He will be opposed by right-hander Michael Lorenzen (2-6, 4.28 ERA), who was surprisingly chosen as Detroit's All-Star representative. |
|||||||
07-05-23 | Reds -115 v. Nationals | Top | 9-2 | Win | 100 | 8 h 55 m | Show |
Josiah Gray (6-6, 3.30 ERA), who was named to the National League All-Star team on Sunday, starts for the Nationals, who have dropped the first two games of their four-game set against the Reds. Right-hander Graham Ashcraft (3-6, 6.66 ERA) will start for the Reds. After going 0-3 with a 16.03 ERA in his first three June starts, he rebounded in his latest outing, allowing one run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings of a no-decision against the San Diego Padres on Friday. He walked two and struck out seven. |
|||||||
07-04-23 | Cardinals +170 v. Marlins | Top | 2-15 | Loss | -100 | 2 h 14 m | Show |
Wainwright (3-3, 7.45 ERA) allowed 13 runs on 17 hits over just 4 2/3 innings in his last two efforts while remaining stuck on 198 career victories. In his most recent start, Wainwright allowed six runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings in the 14-0 loss to the Houston Astros. He walked three and struck out one. Wainwright is 8-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 16 career appearances (14 starts) against the Marlins. |
|||||||
07-02-23 | Twins -111 v. Orioles | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -111 | 1 h 27 m | Show |
Twins right-hander Sonny Gray (4-2, 2.67 ERA) looks to continue the stinginess evidenced by Minnesota starters in the series thus far. Pablo Lopez and Bailey Ober combined to limit the Orioles to one run and five hits over 13 innings in the first two games. The Orioles have lost four straight and 16 of their last 31 and will try to avoid being swept for the first time this season on Sunday. |

06-30-23 | Brewers v. Pirates +124 | Top | 7-8 | Win | 124 | 8 h 54 m | Show |
In the series opener on Friday, Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta (5-7, 4.65 ERA) is scheduled to start against Pittsburgh's Osvaldo Bido (0-1, 3.45) in a matchup of right-handers. Peralta is coming off a loss at Cleveland on Saturday in which he allowed three runs and four hits in five-plus innings. He continually worked through jams -- including getting out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation with just one run in the fourth. Bido, another Pittsburgh rookie, will make his fourth career start, his first against the Brewers. He received zero runs of support while in the game in his past two outings. Most recently, he allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings during a no-decision Saturday at Miami. Bido allowed nine hits and no walks while fanning five. |

06-30-23 | Padres v. Reds +121 | Top | 5-7 | Win | 121 | 6 h 7 m | Show |
The Reds will send right-hander Graham Ashcraft (3-6, 7.17 ERA) to the mound on Friday. He will be making his second start back from a bruised left calf sustained on June 8 vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers, his 15th overall this season. Ashcraft faced the Padres for the first time in his career last month, when he gave up one run in six innings during Cincinnati's 2-1 win on May 2. San Diego will counter with right-hander Seth Lugo (3-4, 4.01 ERA), making his 11th start. Lugo is filling in for righty Yu Darvish, who was scratched on Tuesday due to an illness. Manager Bob Melvin rescheduled Darvish for Friday, but Darvish had not improved enough to make the start. Lugo is 2-1 with a 1.16 ERA in 15 games (two starts) against Cincinnati. He beat the Reds on May 3, when he tossed six innings of one-run ball. |

Miley held New York scoreless for six innings on April 4 in Milwaukee, and he got a victory in his first start of the season the Brewers as prevailed 9-0 |

06-27-23 | Marlins v. Red Sox -120 | Top | 10-1 | Loss | -120 | 7 h 25 m | Show |
The Marlins are one of those strong clubs, entering Monday with the third-best record in the National League. Garrett Whitlock (4-2, 4.50 ERA) will be the first Boston starter to face them in the series. Whitlock, who has never started against Miami, has worked seven innings in back-to-back starts but took a no-decision after allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out six last Wednesday at Minnesota. His past three decisions dating back a month have been wins. In the series opener, the Red Sox will be up against a tough starter in reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara (2-6, 5.08). Alcantara will look to follow up yet another impressive performance by 20-year-old rookie Eury Perez, who struck out nine and extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 21 in Sunday's 2-0 win over Pittsburgh. |
|||||||
06-27-23 | Padres v. Pirates +167 | Top | 4-9 | Win | 167 | 7 h 26 m | Show |
In the series opener, San Diego right-hander Yu Darvish (5-6, 4.84 ERA) and Pittsburgh left-hander Rich Hill (6-7, 4.34) are scheduled to start. Darvish, a five-time All-Star who opened the season with five quality starts in his first seven appearances, has run into a bump. He has lost two straight starts and has given up 10 runs over his past 11 innings. He has one quality start over his past seven outings. Most recently, he allowed four runs in six innings Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants. Hill is coming off tough outing Wednesday, when he gave up five runs (three earned) in 5 2/3 innings against the Chicago Cubs in an 8-3 Pittsburgh loss. Hill is 6-4 with a 3.03 ERA in 13 career starts against the Padres but has not faced them since 2019. |

06-24-23 | Diamondbacks v. Giants -105 | Top | 6-7 | Win | 100 | 7 h 1 m | Show |
Right-hander Merrill Kelly (9-3, 2.90 ERA) will look for a National League-leading 10th win as he attempts to derail a surging Giants club that has won 11 of its last 12 games. San Francisco is expected to go the opener route after taking the opener of the three-game series 8-5 on Friday. Kelly will be making his 17th career start against the Giants, against whom he is 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA. The 34-year-old veteran is unbeaten in his last 10 starts, going 8-0 with a 2.69 ERA in that span. He allowed just three hits in each of his past two outings, against the Philadelphia Phillies on June 14 and the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, striking out a total of 14 in 13 innings. The Giants' probable starter is Ryan Walker (2-0, 1.56 ERA) in an opener role. The right-hander allowed just one run in a total of 2 2/3 innings as the starter in wins over the San Diego Padres on Monday and Wednesday. The starts were the first of Walker's rookie season as he has successfully stepped in for opener specialist John Brebbia, who kicked off five wins in eight starts before going on the injured list last weekend. The Giants are currently using openers to fill voids left by injuries to Alex Cobb and Ross Stripling. |

06-22-23 | A's +170 v. Guardians | Top | 1-6 | Loss | -100 | 3 h 53 m | Show |
Logan Allen (3-2, 3.95 ERA) experienced his shortest start of the season, allowing five runs and four hits in three innings during Cleveland's 8-6 win. He struck out two and walked four. Allen was handed a 5-0 lead before he took the mound, but the Padres came back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Oakland plans to send left-hander JP Sears to the mound in the series finale. Sears (1-4, 4.24 ERA) went six straight starts in which he allowed two earned runs or fewer, but that streak ended on Friday when he surrendered four runs and four hits in seven innings during a 6-1 loss to the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. He struck out seven, and for the second consecutive game, did not walk a batter. |

Texas will start right-hander Dane Dunning (5-1, 2.76 ERA), while Toronto's pitching plans remained uncertain. For the Rangers, it's about getting the offense back to producing at the level it showed early on this season. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said he doesn't feel his team is pressing with runners in scoring position, describing the club's struggles more as a rough patch. |

After appreciating his excellent big-league debut, the Cincinnati Reds will see what rookie pitcher Andrew Abbott can do for an encore. Abbott (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will face the host Cardinals on Saturday in the middle game of a three-game series. He threw six scoreless innings on one hit and four walks during a 2-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday. St. Louis will start Miles Mikolas (4-2, 3.74 ERA), who has allowed three runs or fewer in 10 straight starts and two earned runs or fewer in seven of them. Mikolas took a 2-1 loss at Pittsburgh in his last start. He allowed the two runs on 10 hits in five innings but fell victim to his team's recent power outage. |
|||||||
06-09-23 | Royals v. Orioles -171 | Top | 2-3 | Win | 100 | 5 h 59 m | Show |
The Orioles will send right-hander Tyler Wells (4-2, 3.29 ERA) to the mound on Friday. Wells has logged at least five innings in all 12 starts this season. He had a career-high nine strikeouts on Sunday in a victory at San Francisco, when he gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Wells has faced the Royals six times and is 3-0 with a 3.54 ERA in those games. He has more wins against Kansas City than against any other team. Left-hander Daniel Lynch (0-1, 4.35 ERA) will be the starting pitcher for the Royals. Lynch, who will be in his third game of the season after coming off the injured list, has worked at least five innings in both of his starts. In his latest outing, he gave up five runs (three earned) in the first inning against Colorado on Saturday, but they he blanked the Rockies over the next four innings. |
|||||||
06-06-23 | Royals +152 v. Marlins | Top | 1-6 | Loss | -100 | 6 h 23 m | Show |
Left-hander Jesus Luzardo (4-4, 4.05 ERA) will attempt to make sure that the Marlins don't end up playing down to their competition when he makes his 13th start of the season on Tuesday. In his most recent outing, Luzardo took a loss after allowing five runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings against the San Diego Padres on Thursday. He walked one and fanned eight. Luzardo has made two career appearances against Kansas City, both in relief, and he surrendered five runs on five hits in 2 2/3 innings. The task of slowing Arraez on Tuesday will fall to Kansas City starter Zack Greinke (1-5, 4.19 ERA). The veteran right-hander has not won a game since May 3, when he beat the Baltimore Orioles with five shutout innings. The Royals are 3-9 this season when Greinke starts, and they have lost the past four times he took the mound. Although Greinke only has one quality start in 12 outings this season, he has a strong track record against the Marlins, going 7-0 with a 3.06 ERA in 13 career appearances (12 starts) against Miami. If Greinke wants to continue his dominance of the Marlins, he will have to lean on a young Kansas City offense that was averaging three runs per game in its past seven contests before putting up six in the opener at Miami. |

06-03-23 | Orioles +119 v. Giants | Top | 0-4 | Loss | -100 | 11 h 53 m | Show |
Alex Cobb will seek to continue to torment the Baltimore Orioles -- both as an employee and now as an opponent -- when he gets the ball Saturday night for the host San Francisco Giants in the second game of the clubs' three-game interleague series. Cobb (4-2, 3.05 ERA) will try to get the Giants even in the series when makes his 14th career start against Baltimore, sandwiching a three-year stint in which he started 41 games as a member of the Orioles. Coincidentally, his opposing pitcher Saturday -- Orioles righty Kyle Bradish (2-1, 3.89) -- had a similar experience when he pitched against the team that drafted him on May 17. He responded with an impressive effort at home against the Angels, allowing just one run in 6 2/3 innings of a 3-1 win. |
|||||||
05-30-23 | Guardians +135 v. Orioles | Top | 5-8 | Loss | -100 | 8 h 39 m | Show |
Cleveland right-hander Cal Quantrill (2-3, 4.75 ERA) will try to keep the Orioles out of sorts. Quantrill is coming off his second-shortest outing of the season, a four-inning stint last Wednesday in a 6-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox when he allowed all six runs. Quantrill is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in four career outings (three starts) against the Orioles. The Guardians have been riding strong defense recently, highlighted by third baseman Gabriel Arias, who has stayed in the lineup despite a .193 batting average. Baltimore will go with right-hander Kyle Gibson (6-3, 3.82 ERA) on Tuesday. He's coming off two sterling performances, including seven shutout innings in Thursday's 3-1 road victory against the New York Yankees. This will mark just the third home outing in a stretch of seven starts for Gibson. He's 3-10 with a 5.59 ERA against Cleveland in 21 all-time appearances (20 starts). The Guardians have won three of their last four games. They'll be aiming for their fourth victory in five games, something they haven't accomplished since the first week of the season. On the road, though, the Guardians were 1-7 in their last eight games before Monday's win. |

The right-hander allowed five runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings to the Kansas City Royals on Monday and wound up with a no-decision as the Tigers won in extra innings. In his three previous outings, Lorenzen gave up a total of two runs in 20 innings. Jesse Scholtens (0-2, 2.25) is slated to make his first major league start for the White Sox. Scholtens pitched five innings of long relief on Monday against the Cleveland Guardians, taking a loss after allowing one run and two hits. He made seven starts for Triple-A Charlotte this season, going 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA. Scholtens made 160 minor league appearances (111 starts) prior to his promotion. 05-26-23 | Rangers v. Orioles -128 | Top | 12-2 | Loss | -128 | 7 h 27 m | Show |
The Orioles will give the ball on Friday to rookie Grayson Rodriguez (2-1, 6.21 ERA), who is coming off a solid outing in his latest start. The right-hander gave up two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and a walk in five innings during a no-decision at Toronto on Saturday. Rodriguez, who hasn't lasted more than 5 2/3 innings in an outing, made his major league debut against the Rangers on April 5. He wasn't involved in the decision after yielding two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk in five innings. Texas right-hander Jon Gray (4-1, 3.02), who will start Friday, pitched well against the Orioles the last time he faced them. Gray picked up the loss despite allowing just two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 6 1/3 innings during a 2-0 setback on April 3. In three career starts vs. Baltimore, Gray is 1-2 with a 3.68 ERA. Gray was sharp on Saturday, allowing just a run on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks over five innings of an 11-5 win over the visiting Colorado Rockies. |
|||||||
05-26-23 | Dodgers v. Rays -110 | Top | 3-9 | Win | 100 | 7 h 9 m | Show |
Left-hander Jalen Beeks (1-2, 4.68 ERA) will look to make sure Tampa Bay continues its home dominance when he serves as Friday's opener. Beeks last pitched on Sunday against the Milwaukee Brewers. He allowed one run on one hit with two walks and three strikeouts in two innings. In his lone appearance against the Dodgers, Beeks worked 4 2/3 innings of relief back on May 21, 2019, allowing five runs on eight hits. He walked two and fanned four. Right-hander Noah Syndergaard (1-3, 5.88) will oppose Beeks in search of his first win since April 30. Syndergaard most recently took a no-decision against the St. Louis Cardinals last Saturday after giving up three runs on four hits in five innings. He issued one walk, hit a batter and tallied four strikeouts. In two career starts versus the Rays, Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA. |

05-24-23 | Diamondbacks v. Phillies +105 | Top | 5-6 | Win | 105 | 13 h 14 m | Show |
Ranger Suarez fell to 0-1, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks in 2.0 innings, as the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Chicago Cubs 10-1 on Friday. Suarez struck out four, ending the game with a 10.50 ERA and 2.67 WHIP on the season. This looks too easy. We'll take the small plus money. |
|||||||
05-23-23 | Red Sox -107 v. Angels | Top | 0-4 | Loss | -107 | 12 h 43 m | Show |
Right-hander Griffin Canning will make his seventh start of the season Tuesday night when the Los Angeles Angels face the Boston Red Sox in Anaheim, Calif., but he still is working through the process of returning from a long layoff. Canning (2-2, 6.14 ERA) was a starter for the Angels in 2021 but missed half of that season and all of 2022 with a stress fracture in his back. He did not return until this past April. He's pitched at least five innings in five of his six starts this year but has failed to finish six innings. He has struggled in May, giving up 13 earned runs in 14 innings, but Angels manager Phil Nevin said he sees Canning taking steps in the right direction. Right-hander Brayan Bello (3-1, 4.45 ERA) will make his seventh start of the season for Boston. He is 0-1 with a 16.88 ERA in one career start against the Angels. |
|||||||
05-22-23 | Diamondbacks v. Phillies -197 | Top | 6-3 | Loss | -197 | 10 h 37 m | Show |
Inconsistency has been an issue for scheduled Phillies starter Zack Wheeler (3-3, 4.06 ERA). The right-hander has allowed two or fewer earned runs in four of his nine starts, but also yielded four in four other outings, and completed seven innings just once in 2023. On Tuesday at San Francisco, Wheeler allowed two runs each in the third and fourth innings, plus nine hits, while striking out eight, over six innings of a 4-3 loss. "(Wheeler) pitched better than his line, for sure," Phillies manager Ron Thomson said. Wheeler has been solid while going 5-2 with a 2.95 ERA in nine starts versus Arizona. He yielded just two hits and fanned eight without a walk during a 4-0 home victory over the Diamondbacks last season. Arizona's Christian Walker is 6-for-11 with a homer against Wheeler. The first baseman had two hits with three RBIs during Sunday's 8-3 win at Pittsburgh, and has five with six RBIs in his last five games following a 4-for-28 stretch. |
|||||||
05-21-23 | Orioles v. Blue Jays -185 | Top | 8-3 | Loss | -185 | 2 h 10 m | Show |
Right-hander Dean Kremer (5-1, 4.94 ERA) is scheduled to start for Baltimore on Sunday. He is 1-3 with a 5.77 ERA in seven career outings (six starts) against the Blue Jays. Right-hander Kevin Gausman (2-3, 3.27) is slated to start for Toronto. He is 1-1 with a 7.00 ERA in two career starts against his former team. The victory on Saturday could be the highlight of a strong Orioles start to the season. They are 30-16 overall and have won seven of their past 10 games. |
|||||||
05-21-23 | Diamondbacks -120 v. Pirates | Top | 8-3 | Win | 100 | 2 h 18 m | Show |
In the series finale, Arizona right-hander Merrill Kelly (4-3, 2.92 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Pittsburgh right-hander Roansy Contreras (3-4, 4.40). Kelly is 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA in his past four starts. In last Monday's outing against Oakland, Kelly did something he had never done before -- got ejected. Kelly got tossed shortly after being lifted in the eighth inning following an ejection of Arizona manager Torey Lovullo. Both were arguing about a check swing that was called a strike. |

05-19-23 | Cubs v. Phillies -117 | Top | 10-1 | Loss | -117 | 10 h 39 m | Show |
Scheduled Cubs starter Marcus Stroman (2-4, 3.24 ERA) was 2-1 with an 0.75 ERA in his first four starts, but 0-3 with a 5.54 ERA in the last five. The right-hander yielded season-highs of six runs and seven hits in just 2 2/3 innings of Sunday's 16-3 loss to the Twins. Philadelphia's Ranger Suarez (0-0, 6.75 ERA) is slated to make his second 2023 start after returning from a strained left elbow to allow three runs, seven hits, and strike out four in four innings of Saturday's 7-4 win at Colorado. The left-hander is 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts against the Cubs. |
|||||||
05-18-23 | Guardians v. White Sox -135 | Top | 3-1 | Loss | -135 | 4 h 21 m | Show |
Cleveland will turn to rookie left-hander Logan Allen (1-1, 3.43 ERA) as it tries to salvage the finale. Thursday marks Allen's fifth start since making his major league debut April 23. The 24-year-old has 24 strikeouts in 21 innings. In his most recent start Friday, Allen fanned Los Angeles Angels stars Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout in the same inning. Chicago starter Dylan Cease (2-2, 4.86) tries for his first victory since April 10, a span of six starts. Cease rebounded from a rough outing at Kansas City on May 8 with Saturday's no-decision against Houston, when he scattered four hits, two walks and five strikeouts in six shutout innings. Cease is 4-3 with a 3.74 ERA in nine career starts against Cleveland, with 46 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings. |

05-18-23 | Nationals +140 v. Marlins | Top | 3-5 | Loss | -100 | 3 h 13 m | Show |
Right-hander Trevor Williams, who is on his fourth team in four years, is set to start for the Washington Nationals against the host Miami Marlins in the series finale on Thursday afternoon. Washington will be looking to avoid a three-game sweep. Williams, a 31-year-old native of San Diego, was Miami's second-round pick in 2013 out of Arizona State. However, the Marlins traded him to the Pirates in 2015. He made his MLB debut with the Pirates one year later. In nine career appearances against the Marlins, including four starts, Williams is 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA. Last year, lefty batters hit .319 against Williams. Righty hitters hit just .209 against him. This year, his splits have narrowed -- .242 by right-handed batters and .296 by lefty hitters. Perez (0-0, 3.86 ERA) made his MLB debut last Friday night against the Cincinnati Reds, striking out seven in 4 2/3 innings. A consensus top-10 MLB prospect, Perez left with a no-decision after allowing four hits, two walks and two runs. |
|||||||
05-17-23 | Twins v. Dodgers -134 | Top | 3-7 | Win | 100 | 6 h 35 m | Show |
After he tore through the American League over his first seven starts, Minnesota right-hander Sonny Gray, MLB's ERA leader, will face a National League team for his second consecutive outing as the Twins square off against the host Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday afternoon. Gray had a 1.35 ERA through seven starts then gave up one run over 5 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts Friday against the Chicago Cubs. Despite holding his opponent in check, Gray finished with a no-decision and his ERA even went up a tick, to 1.39. He has a 4-0 record. After the Twins lost that game 6-2, the concern was all about a sluggish offense. But the bats immediately came alive with 17 runs in the next two games against the Cubs and 13 in the first two games of the current series against the Dodgers. The output was just as Gray predicted. The Dodgers will send right-hander Dustin May to the mound in the finale of a six-game homestand. May (4-1, 2.68) is coming off his second-longest outing of the season when he went 6 2/3 innings against the San Diego Padres on Friday. |

05-15-23 | Phillies -102 v. Giants | Top | 3-6 | Loss | -102 | 12 h 59 m | Show |
Philadelphia will hand the ball to left-hander Bailey Falter (0-6, 5.75 ERA) in the series opener. In Falter's last start -- against the Boston Red Sox -- he gave up six hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings. Falter was perfect through three innings and then faced nine batters in the fourth. Alex Wood (0-0, 2.45) is scheduled to start for the Giants on Monday. Wood is 3-3 with a 3.79 ERA in 15 career appearances (10 starts) against Philadelphia. |

05-14-23 | Rays -115 v. Yankees | Top | 8-7 | Win | 100 | 10 h 45 m | Show |
Clarke Schmidt (1-3, 5.35 ERA), who is coming off his first career win as a starting pitcher, goes for the Yankees. Schmidt is 1-6 with a 5.20 ERA in 13 career starts and allowed two runs on five hits in a career-high six innings in Tuesday's 10-5 win over Oakland. Schmidt has lasted at least five innings in three of his last four starts after not doing so in his first four outings. Schmidt is 1-1 with a 2.25 ERA in six career games (two starts) against the Rays and took the loss in his last start against them by allowing two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings of a 2-1 setback on Sept. 3, 2022. Zach Elfin (4-1, 2.91), who is coming off his first loss as a Ray, will oppose Schmidt on Sunday. Elfin won his first four decisions before allowing a season-high four runs on seven hits in six innings during a 4-2 loss at Baltimore on Tuesday. Elfin is facing the Yankees for the third time in his career and has yet to allow an earned run in 11 innings. He last faced the Yankees on Aug. 6, 2020, as a member of the Phillies. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits in four innings while taking a no-decision. |
|||||||
05-14-23 | Pirates +117 v. Orioles | Top | 4-0 | Win | 117 | 10 h 39 m | Show |
The Orioles will look to complete the sweep behind right-hander Kyle Gibson (4-2, 4.40 ERA). Gibson was solid in his last outing, allowing just two runs on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks over six innings in a 3-0 loss to the Rays on Monday. Gibson went 2-0 with a 2.75 ERA in three starts over the previous two seasons against the Pirates as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Pirates will counter with right-hander Mitch Keller (4-1, 2.72), who pitched a four-hit shutout against the Colorado Rockies in Pittsburgh's 2-0 win Monday. He had eight strikeouts against just one walk. Keller's first complete game shutout was the first by a Pirate since Jameson Taillon's in April 2018. But the Pirates haven't won since Keller's masterpiece. Keller has faced the Orioles just once, allowing a run on eight hits in six innings in a 1-0 loss last August. |

05-13-23 | Royals v. Brewers -151 | Top | 3-4 | Win | 100 | 9 h 43 m | Show |
The visiting Kansas City Royals hope veteran Zack Greinke can trade his recent road struggles for some old Milwaukee magic when they face the Brewers on Saturday night. Greinke (1-4, 5.18 ERA) will be opposed by fellow right-hander Adrian Houser (0-0, 3.86), who will make his second major-league start of the season after four minor-league rehab starts. Milwaukee took the series opener 5-1 on Friday behind Corbin Burnes, who allowed just two singles over six scoreless innings. He walked four, but the Royals couldn't capitalize. |
|||||||
05-12-23 | Rangers -159 v. A's | Top | 7-9 | Loss | -159 | 10 h 45 m | Show |
Texas left-hander Martin Perez (4-1, 3.86 ERA) will try to keep the good times rolling even though he is coming off his worst performance of the season -- seven runs in 3 2/3 innings against the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. However, only his stats were negatively affected as the Rangers powered to a 16-8 win. Perez pitched much better -- one run in six innings -- but likewise got more than ample offensive support in a 15-2 win over the New York Yankees in his previous start. The 32-year-old veteran owns a 9-7 record with a 4.46 ERA in 22 games (21 starts) vs. Oakland. The A's have lost five in a row, but they turn to a good-luck charm of sorts when left-hander Ken Waldichuk (1-2, 7.25 ERA) gets the start in the rematch. The 25-year-old has started four wins in his last five outings even though he allowed 15 runs over 27 1/3 innings in those games (4.94 ERA). Oakland has won his past three starts 11-10 and 5-4 twice. The second-year major-leaguer faced the Rangers in his third big-league start last September, and he allowed five runs in five innings during a no-decision. |
|||||||
05-08-23 | Rangers v. Mariners -150 | Top | 2-1 | Loss | -150 | 13 h 45 m | Show |
Monday's opener will feature a pair of hard-throwing right-handers, Texas' Jon Gray (1-1, 4.40 ERA) and Seattle's Logan Gilbert (1-1, 4.01). Gray is 1-2 with a 5.53 ERA in five career starts against the Mariners. Gilbert is 2-0, 2.85 in seven lifetime starts vs. the Rangers. |
|||||||
05-08-23 | A's v. Yankees -185 | Top | 2-7 | Win | 100 | 10 h 15 m | Show |
Nestor Cortes (3-2, 4.91 ERA), who is coming off the worst start of his career and has allowed 14 runs over his last three starts, opens the series for New York. Cortes had his turn pushed back due to strep throat and is pitching for the first time since getting torched for seven runs and five hits, including three homers, over 4 2/3 innings in a 15-2 loss at Texas April 30. Cortes is 0-1 with a 4.38 ERA in four career appearances against Oakland. In his only start against the A's, Cortes allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 3-2 road loss on Aug. 28, 2021. JP Sears (0-2, 5.06) -- who was 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in seven games (two starts) before the Yankees traded him at the 2022 deadline for Frankie Montas -- goes for Oakland. Sears is coming off his best start of the season, when he allowed four hits in six scoreless innings before Oakland's bullpen allowed five runs in the 10th inning of a 7-2 loss to Seattle on Wednesday. |

05-05-23 | Yankees +170 v. Rays | Top | 4-5 | Loss | -100 | 9 h 50 m | Show |
The New York Yankees have plenty of ground to make up on the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East standings. A good time to start would be Friday night in the opener of a three-game series in St. Petersburg, Fla. Despite having the second-highest payroll in the majors, the Yankees enter the series last in the division, nine games behind the MLB-best Rays, who have the 28th-ranked payroll. "We have time to make up ground," New York general manager Brian Cashman told reporters on Wednesday. "... Don't count us out. Don't give up on us." The Yankees helped their cause with a 4-3 victory in 10 innings against the visiting Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday night, giving New York two straight wins following a four-game losing streak. The Yankees should start moving up the standings once they get some of their injured players back. |

05-03-23 | Giants +150 v. Astros | Top | 4-2 | Win | 150 | 4 h 20 m | Show |
Logan Webb (1-5, 4.10 ERA) will start the series finale for the Giants. The right-hander has recorded a decision in each of his six starts this season. On Thursday, he took a loss against the St. Louis Cardinals, allowing two runs on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings. Webb lost his first four starts, pitching to a 4.94 ERA, before beating the New York Mets on April 22. Webb is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA over two career starts against the Astros. In his latest appearance against Houston, a 5-3 home victory on Aug. 1, 2021, he allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk with three strikeouts over six-plus innings. Left-hander Framber Valdez (2-3, 2.54 ERA) will start the rubber match for Houston. He has logged five consecutive quality starts, most recently allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over seven innings in a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. Valdez has alternated losses and wins over his past five starts. Valdez has faced the Giants once previously, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out six over five innings in a 9-6 road victory on July 30, 2021. |

04-30-23 | Pirates v. Nationals +132 | Top | 2-7 | Win | 132 | 7 h 1 m | Show |
There is something about this number that seems to be begging the players to take the Pirates. Pittsburgh should be -190, we're not falling for the trap. |

04-30-23 | Guardians v. Red Sox -115 | Top | 1-7 | Win | 100 | 4 h 10 m | Show |
The Boston Red Sox will turn to left-hander Chris Sale as they look to take a three-game series from the visiting Cleveland Guardians on Sunday afternoon. A win in the rubber game would allow Boston to claim its sixth out of the first nine series. Sale (1-2, 8.22 ERA) has not won since his second start back on April 6 against Detroit, going 0-2 in three decisions since. He allowed nine hits and five runs in five innings Monday at Baltimore. The seven-time All-Star is still in the early stages of getting back to his full form after being limited to two starts during an injury-plagued 2022 season. Opposing will be Cleveland's talented young southpaw Logan Allen (1-0, 1.50), who struck out eight in six innings of one-run ball last Sunday during his major league debut against Miami. "(I'm) definitely excited to be on a team where so many young guys are getting opportunities to win games, and to see the success that we're having and just doing our best to contribute to that," Allen said. Boston will be looking to build upon a season-high 16-hit effort during Saturday's 8-7, 10-inning win. |
|||||||
04-27-23 | Rays -142 v. White Sox | Top | 14-5 | Win | 100 | 12 h 31 m | Show |
Right-hander Dylan Cease (2-0, 2.73 ERA) is tasked with snapping the White Sox's losing streak. Cease is looking for his own answers after his latest outing. On Saturday against the Rays, he allowed three runs on six hits in four-plus innings, including a first-inning home run by Randy Arozarena, who later won it in the 10th with a walk-off single. Cease has made four lifetime starts against the Rays and is 1-1 with a 3.72 ERA across 19 1/3 innings. The right-hander has allowed 13 hits and 14 walks but fanned 22 in those contests. He will oppose a Tampa Bay team that is in the midst of its first slump. The Rays average 6.28 runs per game, the second-best figure in the majors, but suddenly they cannot score. They were shut out Tuesday and Wednesday by the host Astros. Houston starters Luis Garcia and Hunter Brown combined for 13 scoreless innings and 15 strikeouts while yielding just five hits and four walks. Rays manager Kevin Cash said following the second consecutive defeat that it was more about Garcia and Brown than poor execution by his offense. |

04-26-23 | Red Sox v. Orioles -110 | Top | 2-6 | Win | 100 | 12 h 55 m | Show |
Red Sox are 17-36 in their last 53 vs. American League East while the Orioles are winners of 7 of 8. |

04-25-23 | Astros +170 v. Rays | Top | 5-0 | Win | 170 | 5 h 20 m | Show |
A pair of right-handers will take the mound as the series continues on Tuesday. In what will be his fifth start, Houston's Luis Garcia (1-2, 5.14 ERA) will be looking to regain the form that helped him record a career-high 15 victories in 2022. The 26-year-old Venezuelan's most recent outing against the high-powered Toronto Blue Jays has manager Dusty Baker and the rest of the coaching staff encouraged. In the Astros' 8-1 win on Wednesday, Garcia fired seven shutout innings and yielded just two hits. He struck out nine and walked one over a season-high 92 pitches in Houston's first series-clinching win at home thus far. "Garcia was excellent," Baker said. "He minimized his pitches. Him and (catcher Martin Maldonado) work good together. It was much needed for us." Against the Rays in his career, Garcia is 2-1 with a 3.94 ERA in three starts. Drew Rasmussen (3-1, 2.01) gets the ball for Tampa Bay on Tuesday. In all three of his victories, the 27-year-old Puyallup, Wash., native has held the opposition scoreless -- six innings against the Washington Nationals, seven against the Oakland A's and five his last time out in Cincinnati against the Reds on Wednesday. Rasmussen holds a 2-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in three lifetime starts versus the Astros. Alex Bregman is 3-for-8 with a homer against Rasmussen. |

04-25-23 | Red Sox v. Orioles -157 | Top | 8-6 | Loss | -157 | 5 h 21 m | Show |
The Baltimore Orioles will attempt to extend their seven-game winning streak when they face the visiting Boston Red Sox on Tuesday in the middle game of a three-game series. Baltimore won its seventh game in a row by rallying from a four-run deficit to beat Boston 5-4 on Monday. It was Baltimore's 11th victory in its last 13 games. "It kind of feels like last year's team a little bit," Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. "We just don't blow a lot of people out. A lot of tight games. I think our players are better for it with how many tight games we played last year." The Orioles have limited their opponents to 11 runs during the seven victories. Boston failed to score in the final six innings Monday after scoring four runs in the first three. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Baltimore pitchers changed their game plan after first baseman Triston Casas hit a solo home run in the second inning. "They were throwing a lot of fastballs early on and then after that (the home run) it was breaking balls and changeups," Cora said. "And then they switched the script again." Kyle Bradish (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to start for Baltimore on Tuesday. |

04-24-23 | Rangers v. Reds +103 | Top | 6-7 | Win | 103 | 19 h 57 m | Show |
The Rangers are 6-20 in their last 26 interleague games vs. a left-handed starter and 3-9 in their last 12 when their opponent allows 2 runs or less in their previous game. |

04-22-23 | Royals +161 v. Angels | Top | 11-8 | Win | 161 | 10 h 50 m | Show |
Left-hander Tyler Anderson (1-0, 6.75 ERA) will make his fourth start of the season Saturday for the Angels. After a strong performance his first time out -- six shutout innings in a win against the Oakland Athletics -- he has struggled his past two times out, giving up 11 runs in 8 2/3 innings. Anderson is 0-2 with a 3.32 ERA in three career starts vs. Kansas City. Right-hander Zack Greinke (0-3, 4.03 ) will make his fifth start of the season for Kansas City, still looking for his first victory. He hasn't pitched poorly, getting into the sixth inning in three of the four starts, and allowing three earned runs or less in three of four. Greinke is 7-5 with a 3.43 ERA in 20 career games (19 starts) against the Angels. Greinke, like the other Royals pitchers, has been a victim of a lack of run support from the offense. The Royals average just 2.95 runs per game, and their total runs scored are tied with the Miami Marlins and Detroit Tigers (58) to make up the bottom three in the majors. |
|||||||
04-21-23 | White Sox +158 v. Rays | Top | 7-8 | Loss | -100 | 10 h 51 m | Show |
Michael Kopech (0-2, 6.32 ERA) is scheduled to start the series opener for Chicago. Kopech has pitched well enough in his past two starts to earn his first victory. He limited the Pittsburgh Pirates to one run and two hits in six innings on April 9, but the offense didn't provide any support in the 1-0 loss. He came back last Saturday and took a 2-1 lead into the sixth inning against the visiting Baltimore Orioles, but gave up a leadoff homer and then was removed after walking the next batter. Kopech ultimately surrendered three runs and six hits in five innings of the 7-6 win in 10 innings. He was pleased with his performance, especially since his only effective pitches were his fastball and slider. "At least a third pitch, if not four pitches, would have been nice," Kopech said. "I probably would have been able to go six or seven instead of just into the sixth." Kopech has made one start against the Rays in his MLB career and blanked them on one hit over five innings in a 3-2 win on April 16, 2022. Reliever Calvin Faucher (0-0, 4.15) will make his second straight start for the Rays and could be asked to pitch as many as four innings. The right-hander has thrown just one scoreless inning of relief against the White Sox in his career. |

04-18-23 | Brewers +143 v. Mariners | Top | 6-5 | Win | 143 | 13 h 35 m | Show |
Jesse Winker's lone season in Seattle didn't go well. The outfielder tried to play through knee and neck injuries last year, which contributed to him posting career lows in batting average (.219) and OPS (.688) and being limited on defense. Winker was left off the Mariners' playoff roster due to a neck strain, and he was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in the offseason along with infielder Abraham Toro in exchange for second baseman Kolten Wong. Winker returned to Seattle on Monday as the Brewers opened a three-game interleague series with a 7-3 win, though he sat out with right oblique tightness. The set continues Tuesday night. Before batting practice on Monday, Winker took swings in the cage, and he could return Tuesday to face Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert (1-1, 2.70 ERA). Winker wasn't concerned about returning to Seattle, where his reputation on and off the field took a hit. |

04-18-23 | Guardians v. Tigers +121 | Top | 3-4 | Win | 121 | 4 h 15 m | Show |
Matthew Boyd had been scheduled to start the Tigers' series finale against San Francisco on Sunday but that game was also postponed after a long weather delay. Boyd (0-1, 4.00 ERA) will now start one of Tuesday's games. He gave up two runs in 4 2/3 innings to Boston in his last outing. He's 4-7 with a 3.98 ERA in 16 career outings (14 starts) against Cleveland. Eduardo Rodriguez (0-2, 4.50 ERA) will start the other game for Detroit and make his first home start this season. He's pitched on the road three times this season, including a sharp performance in Toronto on Wednesday. He limited the Blue Jays to one run on seven hits in six innings but still wound up with a no-decision. Rodriguez is 2-0 with a 4.05 ERA in four career starts against the Guardians, all of which occurred when he pitched for Boston. Detroit shortstop Javy Baez will aim to build off his improved at-bats during the Giants series. Baez was benched in Toronto on Thursday for a baserunning mistake. He responded by reaching base six times in two games against San Francisco, though he's still hitting just .184 with no home runs. |

04-12-23 | Brewers +124 v. Diamondbacks | Top | 3-7 | Loss | -100 | 1 h 37 m | Show |
Dominant pitching performances by both teams resulted in the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers splitting the first two games of their series, with the rubber match taking place Wednesday at Phoenix. Arizona starter Zac Gallen struck out 11 and walked one Monday while allowing only three hits in seven innings during the Diamondbacks' 3-0 win. Milwaukee's Corbin Burnes allowed three hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in eight innings during the Brewers' 7-1 win Tuesday. In the first 15 innings of the series, Milwaukee did not score and tallied only three hits. Arizona's Tuesday starter, Merrill Kelly, held the Brewers hitless through the first six innings. The Brewers awoke with a five-run rally in the seventh inning, ignited by Willy Adames' leadoff home run. Mike Brosseau, the No. 9 batter in the lineup, also hit a two-run double in the inning and added a solo home run in the ninth inning. |

04-08-23 | Royals +122 v. Giants | Top | 6-5 | Win | 122 | 6 h 31 m | Show |
Hoping to end the run of power displays by the Giants following losses will be Royals right-hander Brady Singer (1-0, 1.80 ERA). He will attempt to duplicate a fine effort in a 9-5 home win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. He worked the first five innings, limiting the visitors to one run on two hits. Singer, 26, has faced the Giants just once in his four-year career, going five innings in the Royals' 6-2 loss at San Francisco on June 13, 2022. He did not get a decision after allowing two runs on two hits. Both runs off Singer in that game were walked home. He is scheduled to be opposed by left-hander Sean Manaea (0-0, 13.50 ERA), who will take his fifth crack at his former organization, this time in a third different uniform. Manaea will be making his first home start since joining the Giants as a free agent in December. He spent 2022 with the rival San Diego Padres, who picked him up in a trade from the Oakland Athletics before the season. The 31-year-old veteran pitched in relief during the Giants' season-opening trip, going two innings against the White Sox on Monday and allowed three runs and two hits. He did not get a decision in San Francisco's 12-3 win. |

04-05-23 | Giants v. White Sox -129 | Top | 3-7 | Win | 100 | 1 h 40 m | Show |
After holding the reigning World Series champion Houston Astros in check on Opening Day, Chicago White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease now braces for the slugging San Francisco Giants. San Francisco, which clubbed seven home runs Monday to spoil Chicago's home opener, will look to stay hot as the series continues Wednesday following an open date. "I think it was just continuing to get our 'A' swings off," Giants third baseman David Villar said. "The important thing for us is continuing to get those really good swings off and not being hesitant about making them. If we're going to make a swing, let's make it with intent. I think that really showed [Monday], one through nine." Villar led the surge from the No. 6 hole, homering twice while collecting five RBIs. He had one of the team's four fifth-inning home runs against White Sox starter Michael Kopech. Cease (0-0, 1.42 ERA) stands in San Francisco's way after limiting the Astros to one run and two hits in 6 1/3 innings Thursday. The runner-up in the 2022 American League Cy Young race, Cease walked zero while fanning 10, matching Jack McDowell's 1991 club record for most strikeouts in the season opener. |

04-02-23 | Orioles v. Red Sox -133 | Top | 5-9 | Win | 100 | 3 h 37 m | Show |
The Boston Red Sox have already shown great resilience two games into 2023. A pair of late-inning rallies have resulted in a win and a close loss, giving Boston the opportunity to win its opening series against the visiting Baltimore Orioles on Sunday afternoon. "That was crazy," manager Alex Cora said. "But like I've been saying, offensively, we do believe this is going to happen. We're going to move the line. We're going to keep grinding." What was crazy was the end to Boston's 9-8 win on Saturday. It ended with a most improbable walk-off. A dropped fly ball offered on what should have been the third out offered the Red Sox a second life, and Adam Duvall took full advantage, socking a two-run home run over the Green Monster. The Red Sox overcame their largest deficit to win since 2019 after falling into a 7-1 hole after 2 1/2 innings. Led by Duvall (4-for-5, two homers, five RBIs), Boston tallied double-digit hit totals for the second straight game. Boston pitcher Tanner Houck looks to pick up where he left off in 2022, setting career-high marks in wins (five), appearances (32) and saves (eight). He didn't pitch after Aug. 2 due to a back injury. |

10-07-22 | Phillies v. Cardinals -102 | Top | 6-3 | Loss | -102 | 1 h 49 m | Show |
After dominating the St. Louis Cardinals during the regular season, Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler wants to capitalize on his postseason opportunity against them. Wheeler (12-7, 2.82 ERA) will draw his first career playoff assignment in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series Friday in St. Louis. "That's where it all counts, right?" Wheeler said. "That's where you want to get to. That's what you battle for the whole season, to get to that point. I want to go out there and do the best I can." The Phillies will make their first postseason appearance since 2011. |

10-04-22 | Diamondbacks -115 v. Brewers | Top | 0-3 | Loss | -115 | 4 h 60 m | Show |
After a disappointing end to their faint wild-card hopes, the Milwaukee Brewers will have to regroup against Arizona ace right-hander Zac Gallen in the second game of the season-ending series against the visiting Diamondbacks on Tuesday. Gallen (12-3, 2.46 ERA) will be opposed by Milwaukee left-hander Eric Lauer (10-7, 3.83). The Brewers rallied to win 6-5 in 10 innings in the series opener on Monday night, but they were eliminated from postseason contention due to Philadelphia's 3-0 victory at Houston. Milwaukee needed to win its final three games against Arizona and have the Phillies lose all three against the Astros. Milwaukee (85-75) rallied to tie it 4-4 with three runs in the ninth. After Arizona went ahead in the top of the 10th, the Brewers came back on RBI singles by Willy Adames and Hunter Renfroe. However, the euphoria was short-lived as news of the Phillies' victory followed quickly. Milwaukee will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2017. |

09-30-22 | Mets v. Braves +111 | Top | 2-5 | Win | 111 | 10 h 42 m | Show |
For the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, the first 156 games of the regular season were just the opening act for this weekend. The National League East may be decided beginning Friday in Atlanta, where the Mets are slated to visit the Braves in the opener of a three-game series. Right-hander Jacob deGrom (5-3, 2.93 ERA) is slated to start for the Mets against left-hander Max Fried (13-7, 2.50). Both teams were off Thursday after a pair of chaotic games against NL East also-rans Wednesday night that ended with the Mets alone atop the division. Host New York overcame a four-run deficit thanks to Eduardo Escobar, who capped a five-RBI evening with a walk-off 10th-inning single in a 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins. Escobar delivered the game-winning hit fewer than 20 minutes after the Washington Nationals' C.J. Abrams laced a walk-off RBI single to give the hosts a 2-1 win over the Braves. The Mets (98-58) are one game ahead of the Braves (97-59). The division winner earns the second first-round bye while the second-place finisher will head to a wild-card series scheduled to start Oct. 7 -- two days after the regular-season finale. |

09-29-22 | Rays -115 v. Guardians | Top | 1-2 | Loss | -115 | 4 h 7 m | Show |
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Cal Quantrill will face the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday looking to make a bit of history. Quantrill will seek to remain perfect at home when he and his teammates close a three-game series against the visiting Rays. With Cleveland locked into the No. 3 spot among the American League's division winners, Rays manager Kevin Cash thought the Guardians might take a different tack in the series. |

09-28-22 | Royals v. Tigers -130 | Top | 1-2 | Win | 100 | 12 h 4 m | Show |
Matt Manning (2-3, 3.43 ERA) didn't walk anyone when he threw seven shutout innings against the Chicago White Sox in his previous start, on Sept. 16. He faced the Royals twice last month -- most recently on Sept. 10, when he gave up three runs (two earned) in 6 1/3 innings while notching his second victory. He'll be opposed by Daniel Lynch (4-11, 5.06), who has struggled in three outings against Detroit this season. Lynch is 0-1 with an 8.53 ERA in those games while allowing 12 earned runs in 12 2/3 innings, including four home runs. Willi Castro has been a thorn in Lynch's side with six hits in 11 at-bats against the left-hander, including three extra-base hits. The last time Lynch faced the Tigers, he gave up homers to Eric Haase and Jeimer Candelario while getting pounded for six runs and 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings. |

09-26-22 | Orioles +115 v. Red Sox | Top | 14-8 | Win | 115 | 13 h 38 m | Show |
The Baltimore Orioles picked the wrong time to squander a couple of chances to win key games. That leads to a more heightened sense of urgency moving forward for a team that's four games out of the third and final wild card in the American League. The next assignment comes against the host Boston Red Sox on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series. The Orioles (79-73) had won three in a row until a pair of tough results to conclude a four-game home series with the Houston Astros. Baltimore failed to protect a lead in an 11-10 setback Saturday and then fell 6-3 in 11 innings Sunday. Manager Brandon Hyde said those were disappointing outcomes because the Orioles "should have won" those games. Yet while the Orioles split the series with the AL-leading Astros, there was a degree of pride coming from the way they performed. |

09-24-22 | Giants v. Diamondbacks -108 | Top | 2-5 | Win | 100 | 8 h 46 m | Show |
Merrill Kelly will attempt to continue his season-long domination of San Francisco hitters when the Arizona Diamondbacks face the Giants on Saturday night at Phoenix. Kelly is 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA in four starts against San Francisco this season. He has struck out 24 and allowed just 14 hits in 28 1/3 innings. Kelly didn't give up a run in his last two outings against the Giants. He gave up three hits in eight scoreless innings in a victory on July 25. Kelly allowed four hits in seven scoreless innings on Aug. 16 but he received a no-decision when Ian Kennedy served up a two-run walk-off homer to Brandon Crawford in the bottom of the ninth. Overall, Kelly is 5-3 with a 2.56 ERA in 14 career starts against San Francisco (74-77), which has won five straight games after recording a 6-5 win in the series opener on Friday. Arizona (70-82) has lost seven of nine. Kelly (12-7, 3.15 ERA) went 6-0 over a 12-start span before troubles surfaced over his last three outings. He is 0-2 with a 6.00 ERA and seven homers allowed during the 18-inning stretch. |

09-15-22 | Phillies -125 v. Marlins | Top | 3-5 | Loss | -125 | 4 h 35 m | Show |
The Philadelphia Phillies -- perhaps without first baseman Rhys Hoskins -- will shoot for a three-game sweep of the host Miami Marlins on Thursday night. Hoskins suffered a bruise on his right hand when he was hit by a pitch from Edward Cabrera in the third inning on Wednesday. X-rays were negative. Even so, the Phillies (80-62) went on to win their fifth consecutive game. Former Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto victimized his former team with two homers and four RBIs in a 6-1 victory. The Phillies, who hold the second of three National League wild-card positions, have won 10 of their past 12 meetings with the Marlins. Miami won the teams' first head-to-head series this year, taking three out of four games at home in mid-April, but the Phillies have dominated since then. |
