MLB Predictions & Handicapping Insight
Here’s a look at three favorites, two teams from the middle of the pack, and two long shots to win the 2019 World Series.
Updated 2019 MLB Baseball Futures Predictions & Gambling Odds
Houston Astros +700
The Astros seem to be the forgotten team among the elite clubs in baseball. They’ve been to the ALCS in back-to-back years and have a World Series win thrown in there, but they certainly aren’t garnering as much attention as the Yankees or Red Sox.
That’s good news for futures bettors. While there isn’t a ton of value in this perennial contender on the rise, they do slot in alongside the Red Sox and behind the Yankees, making them the favorite to side with out of the AL.
Los Angeles Dodgers +800
The Dodgers enter the season with a roster missing some very familiar faces, but this is still very much a championship caliber club. Adding A.J. Pollock to an offense that needed some punch near the top of the order could make a world of difference.
But everything still runs through the ace, and Clayton Kershaw is dealing with some more injury woes. There’s going to be less competition in the NL West this year with the Diamondbacks selling off key pieces. Perhaps an extended rest for Kershaw to allow him to get back to 100 percent is in order.
Philadelphia Phillies +900
The Phillies were a young team on the rise last season, with a lot of onlookers thinking that they could be one of the surprise teams to burst through and make some real noise in the AL East, possibly grabbing a wild card spot behind the Nationals.
While there were some growing pains in year one under Gabe Kapler, the front office decided to really accelerate the timetable on the Phillies being contenders in the AL East with the offseason additions of Bryce Harper and J.T. Realmuto. While both players should succeed in the Phillies’ hitter-friendly ballpark, all the public attention those moves garnered has taken any value out of backing the Phillies on the futures board.
The World Series Futures Betting Odds Play: Astros +700
St. Louis Cardinals +1200
It’s easy to forget, but the Cardinals have been a real force in the National League when they’ve had a big bat in the middle of their lineup. Be it Mark McGwire, Albert Pujols, or Matt Holliday, the Cardinals have done a terrific job of building around that superstar player.
Now they have that again in Paul Goldschmidt. While all attention was being paid to the likes of Harper and Manny Machado, St. Louis added its own premier hitter in Goldschmidt, who the front office is no doubt hoping is that missing piece that makes them World Series contenders once again.
Atlanta Braves +1600
Atlanta was a surprising success story in 2018, riding a young pitching staff to a surprise postseason berth, and the team enjoyed the taste of that appearance so much that they made a big investment in Josh Donaldson for the 2019 season, giving the third baseman $23 million on a one-year deal. The team still needs some work on that pitching staff, and the Phillies and Nationals will be coming hard for that AL East title, but they should score plenty of runs.
The 2019 MLB Baseball Futures Predictions & Gambling Odds Play: Cardinals +1200
San Diego Padres +5500
The Padres have won of the deepest and most exciting prospect cores in baseball, and the club is looking to accelerate the process of becoming competitive with the blockbuster signing of Manny Machado.
If Machado can make an immediate impact, and those prospects on the farm make the jump onto the big league roster sooner than expected, the Padres could catch a lot of teams off guard this season and present futures bettors with some real value, but the more likely scenario is the team remains a year or two away from contention.
Los Angeles Angles +6000
It’s really tough to look past the fact the Angels have Mike Trout on their roster in the AL West, which should be ripe for a wild card team with the Rangers and Mariners both longshots to be competitive in 2019. Staying ahead of the Athletics will of course be difficult, but the Angels feel like they’re owed some better luck.
The team dealt with a slew of injuries to its pitching staff in 2018, with just about every key arm spending some time on the DL at one point or another.
With free agency for Trout just two seasons away, the Angels need to start looking for ways to push their chips to the middle of the table and make an effort at a strong run while Trout’s still in town, if only in hopes of showing him there’s an urgency to win to keep him around.
