It’s my first college basketball game of the year. And it’s an immediate reminder of how strange last year’s NCAA Tournament was. College basketball is weird; we’re going to watch and learn as we go.
Tennessee State Tigers
Tennessee State didn’t bring back any memory, strange, fond, or not, of last season, their 33rd season in the Ohio Valley and first under Head Coach Brian Collins.
Collins started at least 20 games in all four years he played at Belmont from 2002-2006 and then played a little bit domestically before a year in Finland.
He started as a graduate assistant at Tennessee State before going off on his own on a trip that included an 0–27 team in his first season as a head coach with the Columbia State Community College. That’s not New York or South Carolina but Columbia, TN.
He spent two more seasons there, went 54–11 and found his way to Division-1. He inherited a team that peaked with 20 wins and an 11–5 conference record before its head coach moved on. Last season, Collins went 9–21 but if his track record sticks, he’ll improve in year two.
Wesley Harris is a West Virginia transfer who was able to get around sitting out a year. He played significant minutes for the Mountaineers in his first two seasons and he’s shooting 56% and scoring twelve points a game.
Michael Littlejohn scored just less than ten points per game as a junior off the bench last season. He’s starting this year and has seen an uptick in his scoring through four games.
Texas Tech Red Raiders
Texas Tech nearly went all the way. And then Virginia won instead. It was a wild finish to the NCAA Tournament and Texas Tech had it!
Chris Beard has been called a pretender for the last two seasons but no more. He’s riding the momentum of a program that has ascended to a national power in two short seasons.
Davide Moretti and Kyler Edwards are back but most of this year’s team is new. Matt Mooney, Tariq Owens and Brandone Francis graduated and Jarrett Culver went sixth-overall in the NBA Draft to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Being a national power has its perks. As does being top dog in the state of Texas. The two big reloads are freshman Jahmi’us Ramsey and Stephen F. Austin transfer TJ Holyfield.
Ramsey was #30 in the class of 2019 out of Arlington and he’s averaged nineteen points in Tech’s three blowouts. Holyfield started 101 games in three seasons for Austin and then sat out last season. He’s gone 24/29 (83%) so far.
