Philadelphia Phillies vs. Atlanta Braves Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make Philadelphia a slight -116 favorite, with Atlanta sitting at -104. The total is 7.5 for Thursday night’s winner-take-all game.
Atlanta grabbed Game 1 with a 5-3 comeback victory. Philadelphia answered Wednesday with a 4-3 win in 10 innings, with Alec Bohm delivering the go-ahead homer. So far, there hasn’t been much separating these teams.
Game 1 produced eight combined runs, while Game 2 landed on seven.
Now we get one game to decide it. That’s a very different setup from an ordinary Thursday night in October.

Braves Stats
Atlanta finished the regular season hitting .246 with plenty of power throughout the lineup. Matt Olson led the Braves with 39 home runs, while Michael Harris II hit .290 with 25 homers. Drake Baldwin supplied another big season, batting .280 with a .354 on-base percentage.
He gives Atlanta another difficult out near the top of a lineup that looks especially dangerous against right-handed pitching.
The Braves weren’t carried strictly by their bats. Atlanta’s staff posted a 3.63 ERA during the regular season, helping provide the run prevention behind a 94-win campaign.
Atlanta’s lineup has another gear against right-handed pitching. Acuña, Olson and Harris give the Braves plenty of damage potential, while Mike Yastrzemski provides another left-handed bat if Atlanta gets the matchup it wants.
Phillies Stats
Philadelphia finished with a .240 team batting average and 182 home runs. Schwarber supplied 44 of those homers, giving the Phillies an obvious threat to change this game with one swing.
Harper remains the other bat Atlanta can’t relax against.
The Phillies also have Turner setting the table and Bohm coming off the biggest swing of Game 2. Bohm’s extra-inning homer kept Philadelphia alive and ensured these rivals would need one more night to settle things.
Philadelphia’s staff finished with a 4.04 ERA and piled up 1,577 strikeouts.
That swing-and-miss ability could become especially valuable with the season reduced to nine innings.
Phillies vs. Braves Pitching Matchup
Philadelphia hasn’t named its Game 3 starter. Nola had been lined up for the assignment, but Wheeler is also an option on short rest after pitching in Game 162.
If Wheeler doesn’t start, he can still enter in relief. Luzardo and Painter have also indicated they’re available, giving Philadelphia several ways to piece together 27 outs. This is basically an all-hands-on-deck pitching game for the Phillies.
Atlanta hasn’t announced a traditional starter either.
Holmes is expected to handle the bulk of the innings, although Weiss could use Kerr or Suter as an opener before turning things over to the right-hander.

That opener possibility has a purpose. Both lefties give Atlanta a way to attack Schwarber and Harper immediately before the lineup turns over.
Philadelphia has similar flexibility.
Other than Sánchez after his Game 2 start, Mattingly should have nearly his entire staff available in some capacity. Duran’s availability bears watching, but Wheeler, Nola, Luzardo and Painter give Philadelphia multiple ways to react if the first plan doesn’t work.
Atlanta has options of its own. Iglesias, Fuentes and Lee have already worked in both games, while Suarez could become another piece after recently returning from his elbow issue.
There may not be a traditional pitching matchup at all Thursday night.

We’ve already seen eight runs in Game 1 and seven in Game 2, so this number doesn’t require either lineup to go crazy. One more run than Wednesday gets us home.
That’s appealing with this much offensive firepower on both sides. Philadelphia can hurt you with Schwarber and Harper, while Acuña, Olson and Harris give Atlanta multiple ways to create crooked innings.
At 7.5, I’m betting these two lineups find one more run than they did Wednesday night.
There’s also the elimination-game pressure factor. Every baserunner becomes a problem, every mistake gets magnified, and neither bullpen gets the luxury of working with much margin for error.
We’ve watched these division rivals trade punches for two games, and I don’t see much reason to expect either lineup to suddenly disappear. I especially like having the eighth run as the winner instead of needing nine.
This doesn’t need to become a home run derby. Give me Over 7.5.
