Here’s why I’m backing a Columbus ML bet below in my Sabres Blue Jackets free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Sabres vs. Blue Jackets Gameday
The Buffalo Sabres open their 2026-27 season Thursday night against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. Lindy Ruff returns behind the Buffalo bench, while Rick Bowness begins another season in Columbus.
Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET.
Buffalo enters the season with expectations considerably higher than they were a year ago. The Sabres won the Atlantic Division last season and returned to the playoffs, so opening night is the first step in trying to prove that breakthrough had some staying power.
Preseason is finally over, which means we can stop pretending everybody cared about the final score.
The exhibition schedule wasn’t especially kind to Buffalo. The Sabres finished 1-3 and dropped their final two games, although their lone victory was an emphatic 5-1 win over these Blue Jackets.
Columbus went 3-1 during its shortened preseason.
The Blue Jackets finished with consecutive victories and now get to begin the real schedule on home ice.

Buffalo won the most recent exhibition meeting, but Columbus took two of three from the Sabres during last season’s regular-season series. Thursday gives us a clean slate and two points that finally count.
Buffalo Sabres vs. Columbus Blue Jackets Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make this about as close as it gets. Buffalo sits at -109 on the moneyline, with Columbus at -108.
The Sabres are +1.5 at -284 on the puck line. The total is 6.5, with the Under priced at -133.
Those numbers leave sportsbooks with very little separation between the teams.
Buffalo’s preseason ended with a 3-1 loss to Pittsburgh after a 3-2 overtime defeat in Detroit. Columbus closed its exhibition schedule in better form, including a 4-2 victory over Detroit.
There’s only so much stock I’m willing to put into September hockey.
The more interesting question is how quickly each team settles into its regular-season identity once the puck drops for real.

Blue Jackets Stats
Columbus used its four exhibition games to get several important pieces involved offensively. Nichushkin scored twice in the preseason finale against Detroit, while Coyle also found the net on the power play.
Voronkov gives the Blue Jackets another scoring option up front. Add in Adam Fantilli, Sean Monahan and Zach Werenski, and Columbus has several places to look when it needs offense.
The Blue Jackets can also bring some weight to the game.
That matters against a Buffalo team that would much rather establish speed through the neutral zone than spend the night grinding along the boards.
Columbus opens the season with Greaves and Talbot as its two goaltenders. Bowness has options in net, but the bigger early test will be how effectively the Blue Jackets protect the middle of the ice against Buffalo’s skill.
Sabres Stats
Buffalo’s preseason numbers came with some encouraging individual performances despite the 1-3 record. Ostlund finished with two goals and two assists, while Power recorded four assists.
The Sabres also experimented with their forward combinations late in camp.
Ruff used Benson and Ostlund alongside Tage Thompson during the preseason finale, while Norris centered Quinn and Doan. Those combinations give Buffalo several different ways to create offense if Ruff carries them into opening night.
The concern is health.
Zellweger will miss the opener while remaining in concussion protocol, and Samuelsson has also been working his way back from a lower-body injury. That puts additional responsibility on Dahlin and Power at the top of Buffalo’s defense.
The Sabres have enough talent to create chances.
How well that reshuffled group handles Columbus in its own end may tell us more about Buffalo’s opening night than anything that happened during the preseason.
Sabres vs. Blue Jackets Goalie Matchup
Luukkonen is expected to start for Buffalo after returning to the starter’s net in practice. That’s an encouraging development after he left the preseason finale against Pittsburgh with a lower-body issue.
He enters the new season after going 22-9-3 with a .910 save percentage last year.
Buffalo has some insurance behind him.
Ellis appeared in all four preseason games and stopped 41 of 44 shots for a .932 save percentage. He also knows this opponent, having shut out Columbus with 37 saves last April.

Columbus enters opening night with Greaves and Talbot on its roster.
Both give Bowness experienced options as the Blue Jackets begin the season, but whichever goalie gets the crease will face a Buffalo offense capable of creating problems quickly when Thompson and the Sabres get moving through the neutral zone.
That makes the first period interesting.
Buffalo wants to get its skill into the game early, while Columbus would rather make this physical, disrupt those entries and force the Sabres to manufacture offense from tougher areas.
Buffalo Sabres vs. Columbus Blue Jackets bottom line: Buffalo brings plenty of offensive talent into opening night, but Columbus has the depth and physicality to make Nationwide Arena an uncomfortable place for the Sabres to immediately find their rhythm.

Sabres Blue Jackets Free Pick: Columbus Blue Jackets ML -108
Here is my Sabres Blue Jackets free pick: I’m backing Blue Jackets ML -108.
At basically a pick’em price, I’m happy taking Columbus at home. I don’t need the Blue Jackets to dominate this matchup; I need them to be one goal better, and the number gives me a cheap way to back that outcome.
What I like is the opportunity for Columbus to dictate more of the uncomfortable minutes. If the Blue Jackets can keep Buffalo from turning this into a track meet, I trust them to create enough sustained pressure to make home ice matter.
This is the kind of short home price where I’ll gladly make Buffalo prove it on the road.
I’m also not asking Columbus to win with one specific formula. They can grind through a tight game, generate offense off extended possession or take advantage when Buffalo gets loose trying to create the other way.
That’s enough for me at -108. In a matchup priced this tightly, I’ll side with the team I expect to control more of the game on its own terms.
I’ll take the home side to grab the first two points of its season. Give me Jackets ML -108.
