If not for a couple of very fortunate bounces in favor of the Browns on Sunday they could have very well lost to the Texans in what was an overall very ugly performance.
I don’t think anyone reasonably expected Deshaun to just pick up where he left off after being away from the gridiron on Sundays for 700 days, but I think we certainly expected more than what we got. It’s not like he didn’t have any time to prepare at all.
On the other we have the Bengals who are absolutely cooking and at the very best time of the year to be doing so. Coming off an impressive victory over the Chiefs whose number they seem to have, this Bengals team looks like they’re ready to roll again.
Joey Cool is aptly named due to his unflinching nerves, no moment seems too big for this guy and it’s really fun to watch. He dropped back with less than two minutes to play and with solid pressure coming from the Chiefs defensive line on 3rd and 11 and delivered an absolute strike to Tee Higgins to seal the deal on Sunday.
I would like to see this team go on another run to the Super Bowl and even win it. They’re very fun to watch, easy to like their players and they are without question good enough to do it.
One of the more impressive performances from them was of second string RB Samaje Perine who was electrifying all day and even had some calling for him to steal Mixon’s job.
Nevertheless, one thing this team has struggled doing in their days of this core has been beating the Browns, in fact they have yet to conquer their divisional foe since drafting Joe Burrow.
So, we dive into this Battle of Ohio one I am really excited for. Let’s do it.
Cleveland Browns
Overall this season the offensive numbers for the Browns have been pretty good, largely due to the other-wordly play from stud running back Nick Chubb. They rush on average for 156 yards a game which is absurd and is still only 4th in the league.
If you had of told me their offence would be better than their defence up to this point before the season started I would have laughed at you, and I would have been dead wrong because that’s precisely the case.
It cannot be understated that it is against mostly the work of Nick Chubb that has propelled this offence because the passing numbers aren’t there, but it is surprising that with all the talent they have on the other side of the ball that this Browns defensive unit isn’t making the plays consistently that they need and that we thought they’d be making this year.
A positive is that their 3rd down defence is quite good so far and they allow a touchdown to opponents in the red zone 55% of the time which ain’t bad either and they’ll need to be good in both areas because both are where this Bengals team excels.
Cincinnati Bengals
Expanding on that last point, the Bengals are 3rd in the NFL at converting 3rd downs at a rate of 48.30% and red zone trips result in a touchdown 66.67% of the time which is 4th in the league.
They aren’t just clutch in the big moments as I mentioned before but they’re also really efficient both in the passing and running games. Their passing completion rate is also among the very best at 69%.
Digging in a little further, they also have an exceptional turnover rate at only 1 per game on average and worse for the Browns yet? They take very few penalties.
I don’t give a hootenanny about the fact that the Bengals history against the Browns hasn’t gone well, I love them in this spot against a messy team like Cleveland.
