2026 NCAAB Handicapping – Toledo Rockets vs Michigan State Spartans
Here’s why I’m backing a Toledo ATS bet below in my Rockets Spartans free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Rockets vs. Spartans Gameday
The Toledo Rockets visit the No. 6 Michigan State Spartans at Breslin Center on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Tipoff is 8 PM ET on NBCSN and Peacock.
Toledo enters 0-1 under Tod Kowalczyk. The Rockets are facing their second consecutive road opponent to open the season.
Michigan State has the reputation and home court, but Toledo didn’t make this trip for sightseeing.
The Rockets have another demanding assignment.
Michigan State opened 1-0 under Tom Izzo. The Spartans remain one of the Big Ten’s most respected programs, and expectations are high again this season.
The Breslin Center should be lively.
Toledo brings several newcomers, including Angel Montas Jr. and Sean Jones. Michigan State counters with an experienced backcourt and considerable frontcourt athleticism.
Both teams are still establishing their rotations.
The Rockets were picked second in the MAC preseason poll. Michigan State has much bigger national ambitions, making this an interesting early measuring stick.
Neither coach will learn much from the scoreboard alone.

That was a convincing opening statement.

Spartans Stats
Michigan State shot 58.1% against Quinnipiac, making 36 of 62 attempts. The Spartans also collected 22 assists and committed only 12 turnovers.
Jeremy Fears Jr. finished with 13 points and 11 assists. His passing gives Michigan State excellent offensive organization.
Anton Bonke added 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Coen Carr contributed 12 points and eight boards. Jordan Scott, Kur Teng and Kaleb Glenn also reached double figures, giving the Spartans six players with at least ten points.
Michigan State dominated transition opportunities.
The Spartans scored 36 fast-break points and 50 points in the paint. Their athleticism overwhelmed Quinnipiac’s defense.
Free-throw shooting needs work.
Michigan State made only 15 of 26 attempts, finishing at 57.7%. That’s one weakness Izzo won’t be ignoring, regardless of the final margin.
Rockets Stats
Toledo shot 39.7% against Arkansas State, including 6-of-27 from three-point range. The Rockets attempted 73 field goals but struggled to convert consistently.
The outside shooting needs improvement.
Mynor Strong led Toledo with 18 points and four steals. Jaylan Ouwinga added 16 points and 14 rebounds, while Montas contributed 16 points and ten boards.
Those performances gave Toledo a physical presence.
Toledo has players who can battle inside, but careless possessions against Michigan State will get expensive.
Jones distributed nine assists with only two turnovers. His ability to handle pressure will be important against Big Ten competition.
The Rockets committed 16 turnovers in their opener. Better ball security is essential against a team that creates scoring chances from defensive pressure.
Defensively, Toledo recorded seven steals and three blocks. The Rockets also held Arkansas State to 35.7% shooting, an encouraging sign for Kowalczyk.
Rockets vs. Spartans Matchup
Michigan State has the clear athletic advantage. Toledo must keep the Spartans from turning every missed shot into an immediate scoring opportunity.
Fears Jr. controls the offense with his passing. He can punish defenders who lose track of cutters or leave shooters unattended.
Toledo needs disciplined half-court execution.
The Rockets have to move the ball and avoid rushed possessions. Michigan State is difficult enough to defend without giving it extra opportunities.
Bonke and Carr provide different problems inside. Bonke supplies rebounding and size, while Carr brings explosive finishing ability around the basket.

Toledo must establish defensive position early. Allowing uncontested drives would make life miserable for its frontcourt.
Michigan State also has depth throughout its rotation. Jesse McCulloch missed the opener with a minor concussion, although Izzo expected him to be available Thursday.
The Spartans should control long stretches of this game. Toledo’s challenge is making those stretches productive enough to remain competitive.
Toledo Rockets vs. Michigan State Spartans bottom line: The Spartans have the superior talent, but Toledo’s discipline and defensive execution will determine how difficult this becomes.

Rockets Spartans Free Pick: Toledo +26.5
Here is my Rockets Spartans free pick: I’m taking Toledo Rockets +26.5. Michigan State deserves to be a heavy favorite, but 26.5 points is a serious tax on one impressive opening-night performance. The Spartans can win comfortably without covering this number.
Toledo has already shown it can fight back when trailing. That matters with a spread this large because the Rockets don’t have to threaten an upset to cash.
I’m taking the points against a favorite that needs to win by nearly 27 just to beat me.
Michigan State has Duke waiting next Tuesday, and Izzo isn’t coaching for somebody’s betting slip. A comfortable second-half lead could mean more bench minutes, giving Toledo opportunities to trim the margin.
I’ll gladly let Michigan State collect the victory while I collect the cover. My money is on Toledo Rockets +26.5.
