2026 NCAAB Handicapping – Sam Houston Bearkats vs Alabama Crimson Tide
Here’s why I’m backing a Sam Houston ATS bet below in my Bearkats Crimson Tide free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Bearkats vs. Crimson Tide Gameday
The Sam Houston Bearkats visit the No. 20 Alabama Crimson Tide on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa. Tipoff is 7:30 PM ET, with the game streaming on SEC Network+.
Both teams open the 2026-27 regular season at 0-0. Alabama enters with another nationally ranked roster, while Sam Houston faces a difficult road assignment against SEC competition.
Sam Houston isn’t easing into November, with a top-20 opponent waiting on opening night.
The Bearkats finished 22-12 last season, placing second in Conference USA. Chris Mudge begins his fourth year leading the program.
Sam Houston’s postseason ended with a 107-83 loss to New Mexico in the NIT. The Bearkats now have several important contributors to replace.
Alabama went 25-10 under Nate Oats and reached its fourth consecutive Sweet 16. The Crimson Tide again have expectations extending well beyond the opening week.
These programs have met once previously, with Alabama winning 77-58 in December 1997. Nearly three decades later, there’s not much useful scouting material left from that encounter.
The Tide open a five-game homestand against a Conference USA opponent looking to make an early impression.
It’s Sam Houston Bearkats vs. Alabama Crimson Tide, hopefully we get a great matchup.

Sam Houston Bearkats vs. Alabama Crimson Tide Odds & Previous Games
Alabama was listed as a 26.5-point favorite, with Sam Houston getting +26.5. The number reflects the considerable difference in expectations between these programs.
Neither team has played a regular-season game yet. Last season’s results and October exhibitions provide the available context.
Alabama defeated Hofstra 90-70 and Texas Tech 90-65 in the NCAA Tournament. Its season ended with a 90-77 loss to Michigan in the Sweet 16.
The Crimson Tide won all three October exhibitions, beating Furman 111-93, Ole Miss 92-84 and Auburn 87-85. Scoring wasn’t a problem, although those final margins weren’t exactly convincing defensive statements.
Sam Houston went 13-7 in Conference USA play last season. The Bearkats also finished 6-10 in true road games.
Alabama has the advantage of opening at home, where Oats can begin evaluating his new combinations against regular-season competition.

Crimson Tide Stats
Alabama averaged more than 90 points per game last season. Oats continues to emphasize fast possessions, perimeter shooting and attacking defenses before they get organized.
Amari Allen returns after averaging 6.9 rebounds per game. His versatility gives Alabama an important piece in its rebuilt lineup.
Freshman Cole Cloer averaged 16 points across his first two exhibitions, hitting 8 of 18 three-point attempts. His outside shooting adds another weapon.
Oats has enough scoring talent, but the defensive end still deserves a little attention.
Aden Holloway will miss the opener while completing his suspension. His absence removes an experienced guard from Alabama’s rotation.
Anderson Diaz is doubtful with an elbow injury. Cloer is probable after missing the Auburn exhibition, while Jaxon Richardson is expected to play under a minutes restriction.
Alabama’s rebounding remains an area Oats wants improved. The Tide have the size to compete physically but must turn that advantage into consistent results.
Preston Murphy Jr. has also dealt with an upper-body injury. His game-day availability has not been established.
Bearkats Stats
Sam Houston averaged 82.3 points per game last season but must replace 78.5% of that production. Mudge has a significant offensive rebuilding job ahead.
Justin Begg returns after averaging 9.5 points and 3.63 assists. The junior guard earned preseason All-Conference USA recognition.
Jacobe Coleman also received preseason All-Conference USA honors. He averaged 8.7 points last season and gives Sam Houston another experienced backcourt option.
Matt Dann contributed 3.3 points, 2.8 rebounds and a team-leading 25 blocks. His size should help the Bearkats compete around the basket.
Cheikh Ndiaye returns after missing nearly all of last season. He provides additional frontcourt depth.
Transfers Yoda Oke, Zion Pipkin and Enel St. Bernard bring experience from other college programs. Their adjustment to Mudge’s system will be important.
Sam Houston was picked fourth in the Conference USA preseason poll. The Bearkats have returning leadership, but their newcomers must contribute immediately.
Bearkats vs. Crimson Tide Matchup
Alabama has the stronger collection of athletes and more scoring options throughout its lineup. Sam Houston must limit second-chance opportunities and compete physically inside.
Begg and Coleman give Mudge established guards capable of organizing the offense. Their decision-making will be tested against the Tide’s length and defensive pressure.
Sam Houston also needs its frontcourt to avoid early foul trouble. Alabama can attack the paint repeatedly when opponents lose their interior defenders.

Both teams have adjustments to make with their new personnel. Alabama brings the superior individual talent, while Sam Houston needs disciplined execution to remain competitive.
Sam Houston Bearkats vs. Alabama Crimson Tide bottom line: Alabama has the stronger roster and home-court advantage, but Sam Houston’s experienced guards give the Bearkats a foundation for a difficult road opener.
Bearkats Crimson Tide Free Pick: Sam Houston +26.5
Here is my Bearkats Crimson Tide free pick: I’m taking Sam Houston +26.5. Alabama is the better team, no argument there. But asking a team with an unsettled backcourt to win its opener by 27 points is a different proposition.
The Tide’s offensive pace is the biggest threat to this bet. A few quick scoring runs could turn a manageable deficit into a beating before halftime.
Alabama can dominate this game without covering a number this damn big.
My angle is the second half. If Alabama gets comfortably ahead, Sam Houston can still cash by winning a few late possessions against a rotating lineup.
I’m not expecting an upset, and I don’t need one.
A 20-point loss pays exactly the same as a one-point loss when you’re holding this many points.
Oats should get his opening-night victory, but the bookmakers have left themselves plenty of room to be wrong about the final margin.
I’m riding the Bearkats with Sam Houston +26.5.
