The first round series between the top ranked Eastern Conference Raptors and eighth seeded Washington Wizards continues Tuesday April 17 at 7:00 p.m. on NBA TV.
Toronto took the early series lead finally shedding the Game 1 jinx. Washington came to Toronto hoping to capture at least a split so their adjustments will need to address the depth of the Raptors since that was a key factor in the loss.
Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan weren’t the story in the Game 1 victory as Toronto continued their pass friendly, heavy perimeter shooting offense and then shut down the Wizards with their typically strong fourth quarter defense.
Toronto connected on a franchise playoff record 16 treys with seven different Raptors contributing. With Washington focused on closing down Toronto’s All-Stars, Serge Ibaka stepped up with a double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds.
The Raptors youngsters weren’t fazed by the spotlight with rookie OG Anunoby coolly connecting on shots both from the perimeter and in close. Anunoby was also switched onto John Wall in the second half and made a discernible difference as the Wizards guard had a much more difficult time scoring or playmaking.
Delon Wright stepped up to lead the Raptors bench mob scoring freely, affecting the shooting lanes and reveled in his extra minutes in clutch time. The Raptors bench mob doubled up the Wizards outscoring them 42-21.
Fred VanVleet (shoulder) didn’t play Game 1, but should suit up for this one. Based on the postgame podium Lowry clearly has a cold, but expect him to play through it.
John Wall got off to a hot start collecting a double-double in the first half, finishing with 23 points, 15 assists and 4 steals. The Raptors adjusted and although Wall got to the line in the final frame his only other points came via a single layup.
Mike Scott who returned from the concussion protocol program was the lone bench player who caused the Raptors concern collecting 14 points, but none came from his preferred perimeter location.
The Raptors will live with Wall shooting (6 or 20). The Raptors ran the Wizards off the line, particularly Porter and Scott. Bradley Beal scored 19 and will likely be more aggressive in Game 2.
Otto Porter Jr. (calf) also returned and did a decent job on DeRozan, but didn’t have much in the tank offensively.
The other major Wizards contributor was Markieff Morris with 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists. Morris tweaked his ankle late in the game, but is listed as good to go in Game 2.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Raptors are 6-4 ATS in their last10
- Raptors are 7-3 in last 10 head to head
- Over Under is 3-7 in team’s last 10 head to head matchups
Free Washington Wizards vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
Although it’s a given the Wizards will come out more aggressively in Game 2, the Raptors will carry the confidence from collecting the first win. Moreover with VanVleet expected back and the home crowd behind them I think this game could result in a larger win differential.
