Wednesday, November 2nd, the Philadelphia 76ers and Washington Wizards complete their home and home series in Philly. The 76ers took the opening match on Monday, 118-111.
The teams will play twice more this season with Washington hosting on December 27th and Philly on March 12th.
All-time the 76ers have the advantage of winning 188 of 313 matches versus Washington. Last season the teams played three times with the Wizards winning two of the three contests.
Washington Wizards
I’ve previously touched on the fact that it’s not unusual for the middling Wizards to get out to a decent start and then fade.
With seven games in the books it’s not a huge sample size but the numbers are definitely proving that point.
Several of the key categories find the Wiz hovering around the middle — not bad enough to be a tanking club and not good enough to be a contender.
Case in point, the Wizards allow 111.4 points per 100 possessions ranking 14th, while opponents shoot 45.1 percent from the field (8th) and 38.6 percent from the perimeter (25th).
In contrast, Washington score 109.3 points per 100 possessions ranking 25th while shooting 47.1 percent from the field (tied 12th) and 35.1 percent from deep ranking 17th.
Corey Kispert (ankle) is questionable for Wednesday while Delon Wright (hamstring) is out indefinitely.
Philadelphia 76ers
Eight of the Sixers next nine games will be played at home so it’ll be a great opportunity to make up for the slow season start that they seem to have resolved.
I say ‘seem to’ because if you’ve watched Philly’s matches there are some concerning issues to address… James Harden is the primary ball handler and he loves to slow the pace to a crawl and play iso-ball.
That might work for him but it’s not ideal for Tyrese Maxey who would take his game to the next level if the 76ers pushed pace and capitalized on transition plays.
Another issue is how this team has a tendency to stop defending. It starts with Joel Embiid who won’t even bother coming back up court a couple times a game.
When you combine those two factors the players who aren’t getting touches (or getting late shot clock touches) and see their leader giving up suddenly also aren’t giving 100 percent defensively.
To that end, the 76ers allow 108.1 points per 100 possessions ranking 6th and opponents are shooting 46.4 percent from the field (tied 14th) and 34 percent from the perimeter (tied 11th). Not bad — but no where near title contender status!
Offensively, it’s clear the 76ers benefit from a talent like Joel Embiid who teams struggle to contain which is demonstrated via their 49.1% field goal percentage (2nd). They score 110.4 points per 100 possessions (23rd) while shooting a robust 39.6% from deep (4th).
Ironically, Embiid (illness) is questionable for Wednesday.

Free Washington Wizards vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
With Embiid and Maxey both capable of scoring in clutch time the key for the 76ers will be finding the best way for Harden to function with them.
If Doc Rivers or Harden aren’t willing to stop this iso-ball nonsense then they should consider running Maxey and a reserve unit to change up the pace and to allow him an opportunity to shine.
That and keeping everyone invested for 48 minutes defensively makes them a viable title contender. The problem of course is convincing Embiid and Harden to do that.
If Philly takes the game seriously and brings effort they should sweep this home and home set but the Wiz will be dialed in to get the split so take them and the points (but Philly to win)
