Wednesday, March 9th, 2022 finds the Washington Wizards facing the LA Clippers for the second and final meeting this season. The Clippers won the initial match 116-115 on January 25th.
Washington last played on Sunday defeating the Pacers in a winning 133-123 effort while the Clippers are playing a back-to-back set having lost 112-97 to the Warriors on Tuesday.
Last season, the teams played twice with each team winning on their home floor. The Wizards hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 77 of their 125 matches.
Washington Wizards
With 19 games remaining on their schedule the Wizards still have an outside chance of catching the Hawks, Hornets, or Nets for the final play-in seed in the East.
They currently sit 11th 1.5 games back of the Hawks and still have games against Charlotte and Atlanta at the end of their itinerary. In fact, only seven of their games are against opponents seeded sixth or higher.
Including this match, they have six contests against teams currently residing in play-in seeds and the other six are against presumably lottery-bound teams.
Of the teams they’re chasing, Atlanta (29th) and Brooklyn (26th) have easier strength of schedules remaining but with the 23rd ranked strength of schedule if they can lock down they could pull off a comeback and steal one of those play-in seeds.
Raul Neto (ankle) and Vernon Carey Jr. (hip) are questionable for Wednesday. Bradley Beal (wrist) is done for the season.
LA Clippers
The buzz in LA as I noted in the last preview is that Paul George and Kawhi Leonard could be returning this season although that noise is being filtered out by fellow Krypto.com tenants (Lakers) who are imploding after preseason predictions picked them to be in the NBA finals.
How ironic would it be if PG13 and the Klaw returned and went deep into the postseason while the Lakers sat questioning why they let a star dictate their offseason moves despite the player not fitting their roster or style of play?
The Clippers have the fifth hardest strength of schedule remaining with 15 games to go featuring eight home and seven road matches. They have a particularly tough 10-game stretch facing eight teams seeded sixth or higher plus the Raptors and Pelicans.
In the loss to the Dubs, six Clippers scored in double-figures but four of those were reserves who Ty Lue gave extended run after they fell behind early.
Robert Covington (personal) is questionable. Norman Powell (foot), Jason Preston (foot), George (elbow), and Leonard (knee) are out indefinitely. Jay Scrubb (toe) is lost for the season.

Ironically these two teams couldn’t be more different. While they both had designs on going deep into the postseason with the onslaught of injuries to core talents in LA most assumed and would have forgiven the Clippers dropping off the pace early.
Alternatively, the Wizards made moves in the offseason and continued to make trades and tweaks with the hopes of improving upon their quick first-round exit last season.
Instead, this version of the Wizards has struggled to find any sense of cohesion on either side of the hardcourt or establish an identity and find themselves 1.5 games back of the final play-in tournament seed.
Despite the back-to-back, the Clippers should be ready to go given the minute management by Lue so I like LA to win and cover.
