The 2022-23 NBA season tips off for the Washington Wizards and Indiana Pacers on Wednesday, October 19th. Both teams enter the season with specific expectations albeit drastically different.
With the Eastern Conference chock full of dominant clubs the Pacers are one of the few squads earmarked to actively tank while the Wizards are more perplexing because their desire is to return to the playoffs.
Washington may have to reevaluate at the trade deadline however because the Knicks own their draft pick but it’s lottery protected so that may change up their second half.

Bradley Beal is back and healthy and fans will finally get to see how the Beal – Porzingis duo functions together. Beal committed to staying with the Wizards but would another losing season lead to a trade request?
Porzingis played just 17 of 28 possible games after the trade posting an average of 22.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.5 blocks per game. Kyle Kuzma had a breakthrough season and will need to maintain that production alongside the Zinger and Beal.
As noted above, the Wizards are in a precarious situation in the loaded East because they can’t afford to be mediocre and not make the postseason and also lose their draft pick to the Knicks.
In an effort to revamp the roster GM Tommy Sheppard added Monte Morris alongside recent acquisitions Delon Wright, Will Barton, and Porzingis but this club still feels like a squad vying for relevancy.
If they want to be more than a team on the periphery they’ll need Rui Hachimura, Deni Avdija and/or Corey Kisspert to take a sizeable leap. That and their defense needs a shakeup to improve upon their 25th rank last season.
Indiana Pacers
Ironically, the Pacers may have too much talent to meet their desire of tanking. That could prove to be a problem especially if they don’t move Buddy Hield and/or Myles Turner prior to the trade deadline.
Tyrese Haliburton was acquired from the Kings in a trade that feels like a steal by GM Chad Buchanan. Indy might be posing as Canada South with four Canadians on the roster including rookies Bennedict Mathurin and Aaron Nembhard who join Oshae Brissett and Chris Duarte.
Mathurin is a great sleeper pick to win Rookie of the Year and was arguably the most impressive rook in both Summer League and preseason play.
Like their opponent, the Pacers struggle on the defensive end of the court ranking 28th last season although offensively they ranked 18th.
