Monday, March 14th, finds the Washington Wizards playing the Golden State Warriors for the first of two meetings this season. The second meeting is on March 27th with Washington hosting.
Both teams last played Saturday with the Wizards losing 118-127 to the Blazers while the Warriors defeated the Bucks 122-109.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Wizards taking both contests. The Warriors have won 113 of the 198 matches played versus the Wizards all-time.
Washington Wizards
In case there was any uncertainty about what the Wizards intention was regarding the stretch run and their strategy of how to finish the season they’ve provided the answer.
Since returning from the All-Star Break the Wizards have lost six of their eight matches. In essence, they are waving the white flag and letting us know via those losses their intention is to tank and improve Washington’s draft position.
The losses occurred versus the Spurs, Cavaliers, Hawks, Clippers, Lakers, and Blazers while the two victories were against fellow tankers, the Pacers and Pistons.
That they couldn’t come out of that schedule segment with a .500 record or better is all the evidence required to get the gist of their intentions.
Unfortunately, they likely won’t be able to dramatically improve the draft lottery position with 11 teams behind them in the standings and eight of those by three or more games.
The Pelicans won the top draft pick from the eighth position though so I suspect they’ll be aiming to free fall as far as possible and cross their fingers.
The one small caveat that makes the “tank mode” questionable is teams typically sit players with minor injuries in pursuit of losing but star Bradley Beal is the only player listed. Beal had season-ending wrist surgery.
Golden State Warriors
Tonight is Stephen Curry’s 34th birthday and he could be getting a major gift in the form of Draymond Green who earmarked this match for his return.
Green offered this tidbit on his podcast but head coach Steve Kerr said Green would only return if all the team doctors agree he’s 100 percent healthy and can’t do any further damage.
That could be Kerr being overly cautious, professionally prudent, or simply not wanting to tip his hand to the opponent. If he does play expect both sides of the court to experience an immediate uptick.
Green is the captain of the defense but is also one of the Dubs’ primary ball handlers and his presence will offer Curry specifically more opportunity to play off the ball.
Kerr also noted Green would be on a minutes restriction when he does return.
Otto Porter Jr. (illness) is questionable for Monday. Andre Iguodala (back) and Gary Payton II (knee) are out indefinitely.
James Wiseman (knee) played with the Warriors G-League affiliate Santa Cruz Warriors on Thursday and Sunday and is expected to be assessed and slowly reintegrated into the varsity rotation.
