Sunday, October 23rd the Washington Wizards face the Cleveland Cavaliers for the first time this season.
The Wizards last played Friday in a 102-100 winning effort versus the Bulls while the Cavs also played the Bulls in the front side of their first back-to-back set of the season on Saturday winning 128-96.
All-time the Wizards have the advantage of winning 118 of 228 matches versus the Cavaliers. Last season the teams played four times splitting the regular-season series with two wins each.
Washington Wizards
A common trend of the Wizards in recent years is getting out to hot starts. Part of this has to be credited to the team culture but the fact the club just as quickly tends to spiral out of contention is also something the team has historically done.
They’re one of three teams in the East that collected two wins versus no losses (Celtics, Hawks) with the Bucks potentially joining them when they play Saturday.
Suffice it to say it’s doubtful many pundits earmarked the Wizards, Jazz, and Blazers as three of the clubs that would be unbeaten at this stage but it’s equally important to recognize how quickly the situation can change.
Kyle Kuzma continues to impress after his break out season and arguably has been the most impressive Wizards player though two games. Once more he led his team with 26 points plus six rebounds and two assists.
Bradley Beal offered 19 points and eight assists while Kristaps Porzingis produced 14 points with three rebounds and Rui Hachimura scored 12 in a reserve role.
Deni Avdija (ankle) was forced to leave the match Wednesday but suited up and played on Friday. While he only scored six points he was valuable elsewhere pulling down 10 boards, dishing four dimes and collecting one steal and a block.
Vernon Carey Jr. is day-to-day with a concussion while Corey Kispert (ankle) is out between four and six weeks.
Cleveland Cavaliers
When Darius Garland left the match on Wednesday it didn’t seem like a bad injury. Turns out Gary Trent Jr.’s pinkie must have caught him just right as the Cavaliers’ All-Star guard didn’t return to that match and won’t play Saturday but no update was provided for Sunday.
While it was a first game and Garland was out for the entire second half there were signs this Cavaliers squad has some work to do in order to find their perfect chemistry and flow.
Granted, the Raptors are a strong defensive squad but all too frequently the Cavs were caught in quicksand standing around and watching Donovan Mitchell play iso-ball.
That’s not going to fly in the postseason and it’s likely the offense will flow better with Garland orchestrating the plays. Coach Bickerstaff will tell his team to move their bodies and the ball to avoid getting stuck in quicksand but keep an eye out for this dilemma.
In their win versus the Bulls, Donovan Mitchell led the way with 32 points although Garland missed the game again with an eye injury.
