Sunday, April 10th, Southeast Division rivals the Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets play for the fourth and final time this season.
Charlotte leads the season series 2-1 with victories on November 17th (97-87) and November 22nd (109-103) while the Magic won the January 3rd match (124-121).
Both teams last played on Friday with the Wizards losing 92-114 to the Knicks while the Hornets thumped the Bulls 133-117.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Hornets winning two of the three contests. The Hornets hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 67 of their 123 matches.
Washington Wizards
It was a lost season for the Wizards who charged out of the gate and looked like they intended on competing for a playoff seed. But teams who took them for granted early caught onto their schemes and suddenly they fell off and down the ladder.
Trades changed how the roster looked as the Wizards moved on from Spencer Dinwiddie and the overpaid Davis Bertans who’ve both fit in perfectly with the Mavericks.
Likewise, Kristaps Porzingis is fitting in well in Washington although fans will have to wait until next season to witness how he fits beside Bradley Beal assuming he remains with the team who drafted him when they revisit his contract this offseason.
Rui Hachimura didn’t take the step the franchise expected so his offseason will be critical to his development.
Kyle Kuzma (knee), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (rest), Kristaps Porzingis (knee), and Bradley Beal (wrist) will all miss this final game of the season.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets are closing the season strong having won 10 of their last 14 games including the last two games versus the Magic and Bulls. This came after Charlotte had coughed up back-to-back games allowing 144 points to the 76ers and Heat.
While they enter the final day of the regular season sitting in tenth there is an outside chance they can move up but it depends on what the other play-in seeds do.
Charlotte is the only team of the group (Cavaliers, Hawks) who own the tiebreak versus the Nets but would need them to lose and to win themselves for it to make a difference.
All four play-in seeds are tipping off at 3:30 Eastern so there won’t be any heads up to help one team over another. Brooklyn is hosting the Pacers, the Cavaliers are hosting the Bucks and the Hawks are in Houston playing the Rockets.
Of note, the Bucks’ injury report suggests they could sit all their core except Jrue Holiday which leans to the Cavaliers winning that game. It’s a calculated risk the Bucks are making in an effort to drop to third so they can avoid the Nets and get the Bulls in the first round.
Gordon Hayward (foot) was downgraded to out on Sunday and is the only Hornets player on the injured list.
