Sunday, October 30th, 2022, the Washington Wizards and Boston Celtics meet for the first time this season. The teams will play three times this year with the next match also in Boston on November 27th and the final meeting in Washington on March 28th.
Both teams last played Friday with the Wizards beating the Mavericks 135-103 while the Celtics defeated the Pacers 128-123.
Last season, the teams played four times splitting the series with two wins each. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Wizards in 196 of their 315 matches
Washington Wizards
While these teams enter this contest with identical records the variance in their competition is very different.
The Wizards faced mostly lower-tier teams beating the Pistons and splitting their two matches against the Pacers. They beat the Bulls who are in the middle tier and lost to the improved Cavaliers.
Boston also played the Bulls and Cavs losing both matches but the latter was decided in overtime but started the season collecting a trio of wins against the 76ers, Heat and Magic.
Playing a majority of lower-tier clubs has helped the Wizards statistically as they rank eighth defensively however their 21st rank on offense should be concerning given who they’ve played.
Corey Kispert (ankle) is expected to miss three to four weeks while Delon Wright (hamstring) will miss between six and eight weeks.
Boston Celtics
Proving just how deep the Eastern Conference is the Celtics who blasted out of the gate with three wins suffered consecutive losses to the Bulls and Cavaliers although it took overtime to decide the latter.
Teams with length pose difficulties for the Bean Town crew who aren’t long and are currently thin upfront with the absence of Robert Williams III.
Al Horford is carrying the bulk of the load but he’s already dealt with back spasms and if they are a reoccurring problem Joe Mazzulla will have to rely on his reserves.
That’s an issue because Blake Griffin’s better days are well behind him and their main reserve Grant Williams seems more concerned with getting his own offensive stats (note: Williams will be seeking a new contract this offseason because the team and he couldn’t agree on an extension).
Moreover, getting suspended for making contact with a ref highlights Williams’ youth and selfishness because it knocked him out of the game versus the Cavaliers where they needed him more than most nights.
Malcolm Brogdon (back) is questionable for Sunday. Robert Williams III (knee) and Danilo Gallinari (knee) are out indefinitely.

It’s sort of fool’s gold that the Wizards have the same record as the Celtics who are the far superior team.
The Celtics are MUCH better than their 26th ranked defense.
What that speaks to is the Celtics are still a very young team and getting out to the hot start where they topped the offensive ranking (they’ve dropped to fourth) it’s conceivable they drank the Kool-Aid and forgot defense is what truly separates the chaff from the wheat.
Expect a more aggressive, focused defensive effort in this match and the Celtics inking the win –although the 8.5 point spread is a bit rich I’m taking it because the Celtics will want to make a statement after consecutive losses.
As an aside – Tatum and Beal are both from St. Louis and good friends — if the wheels fall off in Washington later this season watch for Beal to demand a trade to Boston.
